The painting, which depicts a youth enjoying a typical New Orleans snowball while strolling down the avenue, was painted in 1937 during the artist’s visit to the Crescent City. painting titled “Runners on the Beach: Haiti,” is likely dated to sometime after 1952, when the artist won prize money in a Miami art show, which he then used to make a trip to Haiti to paint. In this emblematic painting, we witness the artist’s early movement away from the realistic representational style typical of Wilson’s earlier work towards an ever increasing emphasis on color, design and expression.
