RIO GRANDE - Fifty years ago, a group of young men came together to make the University of Rio Grande a nationally ranked basketball power.
Held in conjunction with the induction of three new alumni into the Rio Grande Athletic Hall of Fame, the anniversary dinner featured remarks by several of the legendary '52-'54 Redmen players, a speech by former ABC-TV sports anchor Dave Diles and several stories about the legendary team.
The 1952-1954 Redmen are perhaps best known by their star player, Bevo Francis, and head coach, Newt Oliver.
Francis averaged 50.1 points per game and scored a national record 116 points in one game.
