West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause mild,
flu-like symptoms in people.
The virus is spread to other animals or people by mosquito bites.
It is estimated that less than 1% of mosquitoes in regions affected by
West Nile Virus are actually infected.
The chance of being infected is extremely rare.
Ontario residents should contact their local Health Unit office to report

12 March 2003 | GENEVA -- Since mid February, WHO has been
actively working to confirm reports of outbreaks of a severe form of pneumonia
in Viet Nam, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), China, and
Guangdong province in China.
Early laboratory findings may include thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
and leucopenia (low white blood cell count).
In some, but not all cases, this is followed by bilateral pneumonia, in
some cases progressing to acute respiratory distress requiring assisted
breathing on a respirator.
Today, the Department of Health Hong Kong SAR has reported on an outbreak
of respiratory illness in one of its public hospitals.
Three other health care workers self-presented to hospitals with febrile
illness and two of them have chest x-ray signs of pneumonia.

My thanks to the BA and especially Nick Hillier for making it happen,

Dick that his story on science policy is letting the page down. Am hugely

Also agree with Dick I'll check out the bee stories and see where they'll

Hong Kong, November 24, 2003 -- PRB Pharmaceuticals (PRB) today
announced that Hong Kong influenza sufferers will be the first in the
world to receive Vira-38° - a highly-effective and non-toxic broad
spectrum antiviral treatment designed to provide a multi-pronged attack
against influenza -- when it launches the treatment here early next month.
"Flu is responsible for over 1,000,000 deaths around the world each
year and imposes a considerable health burden in the form of hospital
and other health care costs, as well as lost productivity.
In separate in vitro testing undertaken by world-renowned virologist and
SARS expert Dr. John Tam, two of the anti-viral fractions in Vira-38°
have been shown to be effective at inhibiting SARS CoV, the coronavirus
responsible for the global outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS).
