Zero De Conduite tells the story of a student revolt at a boarding school in provincial France.
The film opens with a pair of schoolboys, Caussat and Bruel on board a train heading for the school at the end of the holidays.
They meet a new boy, Tabard and find that the 'dead man' sitting opposite them in the train is a new teacher, Monsieur Hugeut.
In the boarding school we see how the boys are treated; their lives are regimented through a series of handclaps and shouts; they are subject to various petty disciplinary measures; the teachers steal from them and they have a frugal diet of beans which even causes the cook to complain.
