Below are suggested guidelines for using synchronous chats.http://www.sreb.org/programs/EdTech/MOPD/Chat_Protocol.pdf. These are just suggested guidelines but they can help provide a better means of generating substantive conversation when in a chat environment. The protocols should be applicable for any type of chat structure (described below) that may be employed and help to overcome some of the limitations of synchronous chats namely lack of substantive discussion and lack of threading of discussions. Chat Structures There are basically three chat structures for synchronous chats with many variations within each structure possible. The chat structures can also be combined in various ways to make the discussions in a chat environment more dynamic. Lecture - this structure involves a single person or persons posting lecture material in the chat room. A good approach to doing this is to have short sentences or paragraphs already composed in a word processor and for the presenter to copy and paste into the chat. In between postings, the presenter can respond to questions or statements from others in the chat room or the presenter can pause between postings and allow for some discussion of what has been said. Chats are less dynamic, one person controls the chat, and the pasting of lecture material can seem somewhat contrived and would be better accomplished in an asynchronous environment. The prime characteristic is a moderator or someone who sets the tone for the chat, keeps the chat on topic, and recognizes question and/or statement requests by participants. The protocols are extremely important for this form of chat because it is the passing of the "floor" from participant ...

Virtual reference services (VRS) generate transcripts that provide fascinating mirrors of practice.http://www.oclc.org/research/projects/synchronicity/resources/alise07-handout.pdf. In-depth analysis of an international sample of chat VRS transcripts allows researchers and practitioners to unobtrusively capture the nuances of actual reference practice previously unavailable in face-to-face (FtF) settings. This study reports results from the first year of a two year grant, “Seeking Synchronicity,” supported by IMLS, Rutgers, and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. At the 2006 ALISE conference, preliminary findings were reported and this presentation provides a more detailed analysis of a larger sample of transcripts. Fifty chat transcripts per month are being randomly selected from OCLC’s QuestionPoint service during a twenty-four month period, resulting in a sample of 1000+ transcripts out of a population of 298,000+. Transcripts are stripped of identifying information and undergo six different analyses. In-depth qualitative analysis of the interpersonal communication aspects of VRS interactions involved repeated reading, identification, comparison, and categorization of themes using NVivo software. The categories and coding method were developed in a previous study (see Radford, 1993, 1999) and applied to VRS in prior research (Radford 2006a, 2006b, 2003). Interpersonal Communication (identified detailed components of the dimensions of facilitators or barriers to positive chat interactions and compared librarian dimensions to VRS user dimensions). As noted, this study is in progress, but is nearing completion of the first year. Based on the research findings to date, the authors will discuss ...

Chat rooms and instant messaging are similar ways to communicate over the Internet, yet each is a uniquely different format.http://www.ag.state.oh.us/citizen/pubs/tips_for_online_comm.pdf. Chat rooms are places that both children and adults can enter to discuss a wide variety of topics and interests. Some are monitored by the sponsoring organization, others are not. Chat rooms can be great places to meet others and learn about a wide array of subjects. Instant messaging (IM) is one-on-one online conversation, rather than a group activity like chat rooms. Both chat room and instant messaging conversations are live, or, take place in real time. Everyone in a chat room can see what you type. Although more private than a chat room, instant messages can be intercepted by hackers, or in some cases, printed by the recipient. Chat rooms can be used to prey on and exploit children, teens, and even adults. If you no longer feel comfortable, or begin to feel threatened, leave the chat room or block the other party from your instant messenging program. Be careful about arranging a face-to-face meeting with someone you met in a chat room. Parents should consider restricting children and teens’ chatting activities. Moderated chat rooms operated by reputable companies, or organizations that monitor activity are good places to start. Unlike chat rooms and instant messaging, this type of communication is not live. It is not live like chat rooms or instant messaging, but it generally only takes seconds for a message to reach any destination in the world.

The Chat 50 delivers full two-way communications, enabling natural conversation s with excellent audio quality. The microphone on the Chat 50 (located just below the speaker) is designed to deliver an ideal pickup range of about 120 degrees as the unit faces you. However, the pickup capability of the Chat 50 exceeded even our own expectations - it picks up in a 360-degree pattern quite nicely. Launch iTunes, Windows Media Player, Musicmatch Jukebox, or any other media pplayer on your PC, double-click on your favorite song, and prepare to be impressed with the full frequency response and rich sound of the Chat 50! It delivers up to 20Hz-20kHz frequency response, which is the full range of human hearing, so audio coming through the Chat 50 sounds much better than most other similar devices. 5. Launch AOL Instant Messenger, or MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Chat, or any other IM ssoftware, start up an audio chat session with your IM buddy, and enjoy a hands-free conversation without the pain and bother of a headset on your ears. The next time you have a Webex, Microsoft LLiveMeeting, or IBM LLotus Sametime web conferencing session where the audio is routed through your PC and through the web connection, plug in your Chat 50 and experience ClearOne's trademark audio signal processing technology. 8. PC-bbased vvideo cconferencing through your PC using a webcam and any one of a number of web-based video conferencing applications is now a much better hands-free experience when you use the Chat 50 instead of a USB headset. 9. In just a few easy steps Jeff shows you how to build better buddy icons, save your chat transcripts, hook up to a Web cam, and solve those niggling problems that can make online chatting a chore.http://www.informit.com/content/downloads/ichat_tipsheet.pdf. Although text chatting occurs in real time, it’s not the same as talking on the phone or in person. Here are some general rules and words of advice for when you’re chatting with someone: but don’t abuse it by setting your chat font to 24 point Arial Black. *If someone’s status is set to Away, don’t initiate a chat with I was (rightly) bawled out by a colleague for chatting while he was on a deadline once. Working with Chat Transcripts Although it all starts with the written word, as I said at the beginning of this chapter, the word ends up being ephemeral and fleeting—once you close your chat window, the words disap-pear. If you’d rather keep your words around, save the transcripts of your chat sessions. To save chat transcripts automatically: 1. 2. Select the checkbox marked “Automatically save chat transcripts” (Figure 2). Figure 2 iChat can keep a record of every text chat for later reference when you enable this preference. The files’ titles are the names of the people you chatted with, and can be found in the iChats folder within your Documents folder. To save a chat transcript manually: 1. To open a chat transcript: Double-click the file in the Finder to open it in iChat.

Thank you to all the participants of the Chat Room; an edited copy of the transcript from the Chat Room discussion is below.http://www.smith.edu/dept/ssw/chat/documents/Novembertranscript.pdf. Please note that to facilitate ease in reading, the order of the discussion may have been modified or edited to follow specific threads of conversation. We also noted that, due to the speed of the Chat Room, on occasion a question was missed; these answers have been inserted into the transcript after the chat room closed. It's been difficult to know what to "talk about" exactly in an application essay. Carolyn duBois: We do find that having some experience is helpful, but it really runs a wide range- from some work, to volunteer experiences. Do I need to get transcripts from all the schools that I have attended or just the school I received a degree from? Irene Rodriguez Martin: We prefer to have transcripts from all schools as each program will provide info about your academic skills. Tara Ryan: I was wondering how many students who apply for the advanced standing program get accepted with advanced standing. Irene Rodriguez Martin: We have a limited number of slots for advanced standing but it depends on the experience you've had. Tara Ryan: I have not decided if I want to pass up the first year of the program for the advanced standing program. It would be a lot less expensive, but I want all of the experience I can get. If you opted for the full 27 months we would work with you to waive you out of redundant course work. Carolyn duBois: We have dorms that are available on campus in the summer and also have info available about sublets or apartments near by. Lots of students enjoy being in the dorms ...

WebChat also has configurable options such as the automatic announcement of a user’s entry into the chat area, allowing people to keep track of who is currently in the system.http://www.extropia.com/books/instant_web_scripts/chap26.pdf. The Sessions subdirectory is used by the chat script to store the files related to each user’s session after he or she first logs on to the chat room. This is one of the chat rooms set up in the default chat.setup file. In addition to the chat messages, the various chat room directories also store “who” files that contain information about who is currently in each chat room. Who files are refreshed whenever a user refreshes the chat messages or submits a message to the chat room. Also, the chat script operates more efficiently if it does not have to process so many messages in the chat directory. The chat script has the ability to reference another setup file in case the default chat.setup file does not meet the needs of every chat room. The chat program automatically prints an HTML form asking Chapter 26: WebChat the user to log on to a chat room. However, if you are using a setup file other than chat.setup, you need to specify this in the URL that you use to run the chat script. This is because we want to cache the initial chat room entrance screen even if we do not cache the individual chat sessions. The next part of the chat script processes the chat messages for display to the user. The ability to “log off” is presented as a means to allow a group of people who follow chat room etiquette to gain an accurate picture of who is in the chat room. The final part of the main chat.cgi program is the printing of the chat page. if ($frames ...

Samples for particle sizing were obtained from raw chat in two different chat piles located on the Kenoyer site and one sample each on chat composites from chat piles located at the Ottawa and Atlas sites.http://www.deq.state.ok.us/lpdnew/Tarcreek/TarCreekChatPaper.pdf. This should provide an adequate cross section of the chat pile under investigation to obtain a reliable average concentration for the chat. One chemical analysis of raw chat was performed on a composite sample from the Ottawa pile and two were performed on a composite sample of the Atlas chat. The wide range and variability of lead concentrations can be explained partly by the inclusion of sieved chat in the analyses and the analyses conducted over several chat piles with very different lead concentrations. The variability of the lead within a chat pile appears relatively small when comparing the data within the two Kenoyer chat piles as shown in Figures 8 and 11. However, the difference in lead concentration of chat is relatively large when comparing the average lead concentration between different chat piles as shown in Figures 14 - 18. Figure 19 shows the gradation curves for the two raw chat samples at sites 01 and 06 from the Kenoyer North chat pile and the raw composited chat from the Ottawa and Atlas chat piles. The lead mass per kilogram of raw chat can be summed to get the total lead concentration and compared to the raw chat analytical results. To determine risk from chat, raw chat should be sieved prior to analyses for comparison to an action level. Exposure to lead in soil is different than exposure to raw chat, especially considering the concentration of lead in fine-sized chat particles and the ...

In order to determine if the Galveston County community was interested and would participate in a low-cost, quality health care benefits package in the model of a 3-share plan, UTMB has been conducting focus groups with individual businesses, Chambers of Commerce, and interested groups for the past year.. The object of CHAT is to develop an imaginary health insurance plan. Players are allotted a certain amount of markers with which they can “purchase” health benefits such as primary care coverage, pharmacy coverage, mental health coverage, etc. There are a total of 15 health benefits from which to choose and the number of markers each player is allotted is not enough to purchase all of the benefits. Players engage in 4 rounds of the game during which they work individually to develop a health plan for themselves and their families, then in groups to develop plans for their neighborhood, then for their community, and individually again to create a health plan for themselves and their families. This program, which was created by the University of Michigan, was designed to help consumers make educated health insurance choices in a non-threatening way. The development of the 3 Share Plan benefits package will be based on the results of these confidential focus groups (responses are tied to a demographic profile, no names are used). Results from the CHAT program indicate that the top priorities for health care benefits are primary care, specialty care, hospitalization, and pharmacy benefits. Participants indicate that they are most concerned about suffering major medical events and incurring large debt as a result. They ...

The Eye Chat project investigates how two people look at a common visual scene while they are engaged in a conversation. The project uses eye tracking technology to answer a number of simple, but important questions: • When people talk about something in front of them - for example, a picture, diagram, map or a movie - are their eye movements linked in some way? • Does the degree to which conversants' eye movements are linked relate to how well they understand each other? • How do people use language and gesture to refer to objects in front of them? • When people have problems communicating - for example, when their speech is disfluent they interrupt each other or seek clarification - is this in part because they are looking at different things? --> More below http://mediax.stanford.edu/projects/eyechat.html Telecommunication technologies Human-machine interface design Multimedia design Television audience research Daniel C.
