Thus, about 100 million tons of chat is presently stockpiled on the surface of the Tar Creek Superfund Site in large piles. In its bulk form, chat contains elevated levels of lead, zinc and cadmium which raises raising potentially serious human health and ecological concerns. Limited studies have addressed the influence of such stabilizing agents on the engineering properties of raw chat. A more systematic laboratory study on chat stabilization is currently underway as part of the Oklahoma Plan for Tar Creek; results of that study will be presented in a future report.
