We introduce the use of an existing clustering algorithm on message/chat segments, instead of on whole email messages, as has been done previously. A problem for discussion/chat summarization is the presence of multiple discussion points. Working together in a virtual community in non-collocated environments, OSS developers communicate and collaborate using a wide range of internet-based tools including Internet Relay Chat (IRC), electronic mailing lists, and more [2]. We address the latter using clustering, according to topic, message segments from IRC chats to create a summary for the entire IRC. We are using the term chat loosely in this paper. The input for our system is a mixture of IRC chats and emails that are indistinguishable in format, as observed from the downloaded corpus. GNUe’s IRC archive is uniquely suited for our experimental purpose, because each IRC chat log has a companion summary digest written by the project participants as part of their contribution to the community. Each digest summarizes IRC logs and/or email messages (later referred to as chat logs) for a period of up to two weeks [2].
