After several announcements from Hewlett Packard (SuperDome),SGI (Origin 3000-IA64) and IBM (Numa-Q), Compaq/DEC is one of the first manufacturers to demonstrate Linux running on a super computer platform. Compaq first introduced the AlphaServer GS series earlier this year as the new high-end of their AlphaServer line. Perhaps this sentiment, by Jay Estabrook of Compaq, sums up the state of Linux on massively scalable systems at this point - particularly in light of the fact that the porting work has been completed. Initially, the porting work was spurred on by an encounter at CeBIT in Germany between Andrea Arcangeli, Anas Nashif and Stefan Fent of SuSE and David Mitchel of Compaq. He spends most of his time trying to wring cycles from the Tru64 and Linux kernels, as well as being a Linux advocate both within and without Compaq. The University of Missouri will hold a reception in honor of a research collaboration with Compaq Computer Corporation. The University of Missouri Bioinformatics Consortium and Compaq Computer Corporation will enter a collaboration which will greatly enhance bioinformatic research across the four UM campuses. At the reception will be members of the UMBC as well as visiting Compaq executives. Working together, the UMBC and Compaq will participate in the joint development of a long-term technology and performance strategic plan to enhance bioinformatics research. Compaq is expected to provide the University of Missouri System with early access to emerging technologies, visiting lecturers by Compaq experts, and AlphasServer-based high performance computer systems. In turn the UMBC plans to publish papers on the implementation of scientific applications on Compaq platforms. Compaq's OpenVMS and IBM's z/OS (formerly OS/390) are generally regarded in the industry to be the two "world class" operating systems. Compaq pioneered OpenVMS Clusters, a key enabling technology for high scalability and availability that was introduced in 1983. Compaq continues to lead in clustering technology. Compaq has an installed base of approximately 450,000 OpenVMS systems. Compaq believes that customers will spend several billion dollars on OpenVMS AlphaServer systems, services, and applications in 2001. However, the best news for Compaq is that new OpenVMS customers are now providing 15% of its OpenVMS-based systems' annual revenue. In the past, Compaq's design and verification distrib-uted compute farm consisted of UNIX-based often times expensive proprietary hardware and operating systems. In addition, internal developers created site-specific load distribution software for the management of design verification compute intensive processing jobs. Compaq's internal systems engineers (SEs) and application engineers (AEs) began the pro-cess of developing a Windows NT-based compute farm environment that would provide a robust dis-tributed compute farm to be used to facilitate the de-signing and verification of future Compaq products. Compaq SEs needed to continue the success of the compute farm while reducing costs and administrative overhead. Current Compaq hardware ran engineering jobs 2-3 times faster than the older SPARC-based hardware, and was comparable in performance to newer UNIX hardware choices for a lower purchase cost.
