Understanding bacterial cell death could spawn new antibiotics that target resistant bacteria.http://www.unmc.edu/discover/winter2007/celldeath.pdf. Bacterial infections were the main cause of death by disease until the 20th century. “We discovered 10 genes that appear to play an active role in cell death, which suggests bacteria are far more complex than we thought. He and his colleagues published a breakthrough paper in The Journal of Bacteriology in 1996 that identified two new genes, which appeared to play an active role in bacterial cell death. During the next 10 years they identified eight more genes and published 16 additional studies; all supporting the extraordinary hypothesis that bacterial cell death is programmed and similar to what occurs in multi-cellular organisms, including humans. WITH HIS THEORY OF BACTERIAL PROGRAMMED CELL DEATH. Programmed cell death (PCD) is a deliberate suicide process that allows the body to rid itself of diseased or malfunctioning cells. But to most microbiologists, suggesting bacterial cell death is programmed and similar to what occurs in multi-cellular organisms is as ridiculous as comparing “Dick and Jane” to “War and Peace.” “Many people have speculated about programmed cell death in bacteria, but it goes totally against how we microbiologists have been trained,” he said. Dr. Bayles believed the genes he’d previously identified might play a role in bacterial programmed cell death, but the results were produced in a controlled laboratory environment. The study demonstrated the critical role cell death plays in the growth of a biofilm. We weren’t able to demonstrate programmed cell death in the lab because ...

The European Commission supported the ‘Anti-Death Penalty Campaign’ launched by FLAG.http://www.eurunion.org/legislat/DeathPenalty/DPLeaflet.pdf. This project provided legal assistance to convicted people and those on death row who could not aff ord private defence lawyers. It also off ered consultation, representation, prosecution and overall advocacy for the abolition of the death penalty. Shortly after FLAG fi led a petition before the Supreme Court seeking to stop executions, a moratorium was declared on the death penalty in the Philippines. In addition to this campaign, many other civil society groups lobbied vigorously for the repeal of the death penalty law. In certain cases, the validity and accuracy of DNA results can actually determine the innocence of prisoners sentenced to death. This project has highlighted the need to institutionalise DNA testing in all death penalty cases, and demonstrated the dangers of executing innocent individuals. In fact, one death-row prisoner was released during the project on the basis of this testing. In its relations with non-member countries, the EU is actively en-gaged in promoting the abolition of the death penalty, with dif-ferent instruments at its disposal, as set out in the “Guidelines on EU policy towards third countries on the death penalty”, which were adopted in 1998. Initiatives include general representations, particularly where a country’s use of the death penalty is likely to be ended or reintroduced, and individual rep-resentations where the EU is made aware of individual death penalty sentences which violate the so-called “minimum stand-ards”. Recent examples of this are the ‘EU Statement on the Death Penalty’ on the ...

Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is a disease of soybean that is creeping into the vocabulary of more Mid-western farmers.http://www.ces.purdue.edu/extmedia/BP/BP-58.pdf. Sudden death syndrome was first observed in Arkansas in 1971, but caused no concern until 1982 when the disease caused an estimated 25% yield reduction in 5 to 10% of Arkansas’ soybean acreage. Sudden death syndrome is less damaging north of Vincennes than south in most years. Foliar symptoms of sudden death syndrome in the field. From a distance, the yellowing is clearly evident, but is not specifically diagnostic of sudden death syndrome. Yield reduction due to this disease occurs through premature plant death, pod abortion, lack of pod fill, and low test weight. DEATH SYNDROME The foliar symptoms of sudden death syndrome may appear any time from bloom through pod fill, although symp-toms usually appear between the R3 and R6 growth stages. Initial leaf symptoms of sudden death syndrome. Premature defoliation of plants affected by sudden death syndrome. Sudden death syndrome generally occurs in fields that appear to have high yield potential. Sudden death syndrome frequently appears in those areas of a field that tend to have a slightly higher water holding capac-ity, and the disease is frequently more prevalent in irrigated than in non-irrigated fields. The foliar symptoms of sudden death syndrome may be confused with some other diseases, such as brown stem rot or stem canker, or other factors, and these foliar symptoms alone are not diagnostic for sudden death syn-drome. Sudden death syndrome does occur in soybean fields where the cyst nematode does not occur, but almost all fields in areas where sudden ...

It is time for U.http://www.usccbpublishing.org/client/client_pdfs/5-723DEATHBI.pdf.S. Catholics to come together to work to end the use of the death penalty in our land. Pope John Paul II and the bishops have clearly asked us to act to end the use of the death penalty. Catholic teaching, as expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and other statements of the Vatican and the bishops, makes clear that the use of the death penalty cannot be justified when the state has other ways to protect society. The death penalty in our land is deeply flawed. More than 115 people on death row have been exonerated. The death penalty is unfairly applied due to many factors, including where a crime is committed, the race of the victim and offender, and the quality and costs of defense. Catholics are re-examining and changing their minds about the use of the death penalty. Less than half of all Catholics now support the use of the death penalty, down substantially from past years. The death penalty diminishes all of us. Facts About the Death Penalty Approximately 3,500 inmates are on death row in 38 state, federal, and military prisons. Since 1973, there have been more than 115 exoner-ations of death row inmates. Recent Supreme Court decisions have limited the use of the death penalty by declaring it unconstitu-tional to execute persons with mental retardation and those who committed crimes as juveniles (under the age of 18). In response to Pope John Paul II’s call to end the death penalty during his January 1999 visit, the bishops issued A Good Friday Appeal to End the Death Penalty. Examples of victims’ families who oppose the death penalty and innocent people who were on death row Brief video ...

The death penalty defies international human rights standards.http://www.amnestyusa.org/abolish/wisconsin/Wisconsin_FactSheet.pdf. Nearly two thirds of the countries in the world – 125 – have now abolished the death penalty in law or practice. Wisconsin abolished the death penalty in 1853. The death penalty claims innocent lives. Since 1973, more than 120 people have been released from death rows throughout the United States due to evidence of their wrongful conviction. The death penalty cannot be perfected by DNA evidence. Out of the 123 people who have been released from death row, DNA evidence played a substantial role in establishing innocence in just 14 cases. The death penalty is racially biased. Since 1977, the overwhelming majority of death row defendants (80%) have been executed for crimes involving white victims, even though African-Americans make up about half of all homicide victims. The death penalty is not a deterrent. A September 2000 New York Times survey found that during the last 20 years, the homicide rate in states with the death penalty has been 48 to 101% higher than the rate in states without the death penalty. The death penalty costs more and diverts resources from genuine crime control and meaningful victims’ services. The greatest costs associated with the death penalty occur prior to and during trial, not in post-conviction proceedings. Even if all post-conviction proceedings (appeals) were abolished, the death penalty would still be more expensive than alternative sentences. Spending money on the death penalty system means taking it away from education and rehabilitation, drug treatment programs, and other social services.

The debate over the death penalty is now focused on whether it is ever morally appropriate for the state to take citizens' lives for crimes they have committed.http://www.philosophy.ilstu.edu/alumni/philosophical_conversations/Fall_1997_Rosenbaum.pdf. The ancient tradition of philosophical reflection on the death penalty suggests a more fundamental issue: Is the so-called death penalty really any sort of punishment at all? Socrates raised this question implicitly in his speech to the jury which sentenced him to death. The Epicurean, Lucretius, urged later that death is actually an end to punishments, and Julius Caesar argued before the Roman Senate, in the debate over the fate of the Catiline conspirators, that "death comes as a release from suffering, not as a punishment to be endured." Contemporary discussants of the issue assume, often without reflection, that death is a great evil and that the death penalty is consequently the most severe punishment that could be inflicted on criminals in a civilized society. To this end, we must consider what punishment is, what the punishment of death is supposed to be, and what death is. Thinking about these questions should make us wonder just how severe a punishment death is. For the death penalty to be a punishment, according to this conception, it would have to be an "evil," something bad inflicted on people. What exactly is the death penalty? The essence of the penalty is death, becoming dead. Unless and until a convict becomes dead, the death penalty has not been carried out. Death is either the termination of one's being or it is not. Therefore, either the death penalty is not evil and not really a literal punishment, or we don't know whether the death penalty ...

In the British Isles there are four different legal systems with considerable variations in the way death is investigated.http://www.dundee.ac.uk/forensicmedicine/notes/deathinvestig.pdf. Amongst his roles is the investigation of sudden, unexplained or suspicious deaths. This function in death investigation is similar to that of the English Coroner. However, the PF is not obliged to establish the precise cause of death in the medical sense, once the possibility of criminal proceedings have been ruled out. By contrast the Coroner must establish the precise cause of death . In Scotland about 13% of deaths are referred to the Procurator Fiscal and about 70% of these require an autopsy. The Fiscal investigation of sudden death also differs from the Coroner system in that there is no routine Public Inquest, although a Public Inquiry may be held in certain circumstances. The categories of death requiring to be reported to the procurator Fiscal are: 1. any death due to violent, suspicious or unexplained cause. It is the duty of the procurator fiscal to inquire into deaths which all into a number of categories: Deaths which occur unexpectedly having regard to the clinical condition of the deceased prior to their receiving medical care. Deaths caused by the withdrawal of life sustaining treatment to patients in a persistent vegetative state Most of these deaths are the unfortunate outcome where every reasonable care has been taken, but some may result from negligent acts on the part of medical or paramedical staff (by commission or omission) or may be associated with criminality. If the Procurator Fiscal is satisfied that death is due to natural causes and that there is no element ...

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes was the sixth leading cause of death listed on U.http://www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/dph/PDF/DiabetesDeaths.pdf.S. death certificates in the year 2000. Studies have found, however, that only 35 to 40 percent of decedents with diabetes have diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and only 10 to 15 percent have it listed as the underlying cause of death. Heart disease and stroke are the most likely causes to be listed as the underlying cause of death among decedents with diabetes, as 65 percent of deaths among these people are due to these causes.1 Customarily, only the underlying cause of death is considered when analyzing deaths due to a specific disease. However, for the purpose of this fact sheet, a diabetes death is defined as a death for which diabetes was listed on the death certificate as either the underlying or a contributing cause of death. Objective 5-5 in Healthy People 2010 is to reduce the age-adjusted diabetes death rate to 45 deaths per 100,000 population by the year 2010,2 where a death is defined as a diabetes death if diabetes is mentioned at all on the death certificate, regardless of the underlying cause of death. The table below presents age-adjusted diabetes death rates using the customary underlying cause of death compared to rates using the Healthy People 2010 definition of diabetes deaths. When comparing diabetes death rates presented in this fact sheet to rates found elsewhere, it is critical to note what constitutes a diabetes death for each rate. Although 5.6 percent of all the diabetes deaths during this ten-year time period were among residents in ZIP code 92335 ...

Through my association with an anti-death penalty group, Murder Victims for Human Rights, I have learned how much the family members of murder victims feel manipulated by prosecutors in capital cases.http://www.thecapuchins.org/peace/documents/othersideofdeathpenalty.pdf. If the family members are against the death penalty, prosecutors often do not allow them to testify at the sentencing phase of a capital trial. But if other family members support the death penalty, they are encouraged to testify about the impact of the loved one’s death in their lives, in hopes that a jury might give the death penalty rather than life in prison. For the most part, when a poor person of color is murdered, prosecutors seldom seek the death penalty. Eight out of 10 prisoners on death row are there for killing white people. Why do prosecutors seek the death penalty? Some prosecutors who aspire to be judges have used their support of the death penalty as a steppingstone to advance their political careers. What has been the impact on victims’ family members of the many exonerations that have led to the release of convicted persons from death row? By early 2005, 117 wrongfully convicted people had been released from death rows around the country. Murder Victims for Human Rights was originally called Murder Victims’ Families for Reconciliation, but the name was changed to reflect the fact that family members who are against the death penalty should have the right to say, “We want to honor our loved ones who have been killed, and we should be able to express our opposition to the death penalty in court when someone is about to be sentenced.” Lloyd is a stellar example of a victim’s family member who does not believe ...

Begin without assumptions about the cause of death.http://www.dss.mo.gov/stat/pdf/suid.pdf. This holds true even in the event that the cause of death is later determined to be unnatural. The scene of death is investigated even when the infant has been removed to the hospital. Findings from the death scene are critically important to an accurate diagnosis. As the investigator, you are responsible for obtaining and evaluating the information about the case history and the death scene. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable to death and serious injury from all causes, including child abuse. Research findings concerning unsafe sleep arrangements as a highly significant risk factor associated with sudden unexpected infant death underscores the importance of a thorough and competent death scene investigation. However, it is important for you to communicate with the child death pathologist in order to ensure accuracy in diagnosis and consistency in the certification of death. However, most infant deaths involving possible or suspected overlay are classified as undetermined cause and manner because the actual positions of the infant and the other person at the time of the death were not witnessed. Undetermined: In some cases, even the most thorough and careful scene investigation and autopsy do not produce a definitive cause of death, because risk factors are present that are significant enough to have possibly contributed to the death. Specific findings at the death scene will depend on the length of time since the death occurred, the room temperature and other factors. Any child death that is unclear, unexplained, or of a ...

The Millennium Falcon arrives in the Alderaan system to the horrifying discovery that Alderaan is no longer there.http://www.wizards.com/swminis/downloads/SW_RS_Mission_preview1.pdf. The once-peaceful planet is now nothing more than rubble. The cause soon becomes apparent: the Death Star, moving slowly out of the system. Before Han Solo and his copilot Chewbacca can turn the Falcon around, though, the ship is caught in a tractor beam and dragged into the Death Star’s hangar bay. that the crew abandoned ship shortly after lift-off, Darth Vader orders a more thorough search. But Han, Chewie, and the rest have been hiding in secret smuggling compartments under the fl oor plates, and with two mighty thumps, the big Wookiee knocks out the scanning crew before they can cry out for help. Now all Luke, Obi-Wan, and the others need to do is get to a computer terminal and fi nd out how to shut down the tractor beam reactor. Fortunately, there’s a computer terminal in the Flight Control Center. Unfortunately, there are at least four stormtroopers between them and the Flight Control Center. “Death Star Infi ltration” follows the arrival of Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and the droids aboard the Death Star. Our children grow up in a culture that avoids expressing grief and tries to deny the inevitability of death.http://www.nasponline.org/resources/principals/nasp_griefparents.pdf. Death is all around us, yet as parents we believe that if we do not talk about it with our children death will not touch them. Children will face many deaths that will have an impact on their daily lives. Some of these deaths may be anticipated and some sudden. Children’s Understanding of Death Generally around age 4 children have a limited and vague understanding of death. Children of this age generally do not think of death as permanent. The child may not only have guilt for what he said, but feel responsible for causing the death. Children at this age have begun to grasp the finality of death, but very often they still engage in magical thinking and maintain the belief that their thoughts and wishes may have the power to undo death. This belief in their power may lead to the idea that they could have prevented the death or they should have been there to protect the person who died. This thinking also is likely to lead to feelings of guilt and responsibility for the person’s death. They often look on death as some supernatural being that comes and gets you. Even though they think of death as something that happens primarily to old people, they realize it can happen to the young, to their parents, to their loved ones. They are often fascinated with death and fantasize about their own death to the dismay of their parents. Even with this preoccupation with death, they can feel immune to it and engage in death-challenging behaviors such as reckless driving or drinking or taking drugs.
