Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the diagnosis given for the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age that remains unexplained after a complete investigation.http://www.ocfs.state.ny.us/main/publications/Pub5006.pdf. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants aged 1 month to 12 months. These tips have been developed to reduce the risk of SIDS. Studies have shown that by following these guidelines you will lessen the risk of SIDS. Place your baby on his or her back to sleep. Infants who fall asleep on their stomachs should be gently turned onto their backs. Make sure that child care providers, grandparents, babysitters and any other caregiver place your baby on his or her back to sleep. Place your baby to bed on a firm mattress, preferably in a safety-approved crib. Do NOT use pillows, comforters or stuffed toys in the baby’s crib. Make sure that the mattress fits snuggly into the crib frame and that the crib’s slats are less than 2 ½ inches apart. Be careful about sleeping with infants, especially on small surfaces. A small sleeping area and the sharing of that space with one or more adults or siblings increases the risk of the infant becoming entrapped in bedding or smothered during the shifting that may occur during sleep. Temperature must also be considered for your baby’s comfort. Use safe sleepwear without strings or ties, making sure your baby is not over bundled. It is recommended that room temperature not be set higher than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. They incorporate the guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and add recommendations for brain death determination in children.http://www.health.state.ny.us/professionals/doctors/guidelines/determination_of_brain_death/docs/determination_of_brain_death.pdf. PURPOSE The purpose of these guidelines is to provide health care providers with information about New York State requirements for determining brain death, increase knowledge amongst health care practitioners about the clinical evaluation of brain death, and reduce the potential for variations in brain death determination policies and practices amongst facilities and practitioners The three essential findings in brain death are coma, absence of brainstem reflexes, and apnea. An evaluation for brain death should be considered in patients who have suffered a massive, irreversible brain injury of identifiable cause. In the absence of either complete clinical findings consistent with brain death, or confirmatory tests demonstrating brain death, brain death cannot be diagnosed. Sudden Oak Death (Phytophthora ramorum) is a plant disease of unknown origin; many scientists suspect that it originated in Asia.http://www.nature.org/initiatives/forests/files/fy08suddenoakdeath.pdf. Sudden Oak Death probably entered the United States on plants imported for horticultural use. In North America, Sudden Oak Death is now established in 14 California counties and a small area in one southern Oregon county. In 2004, Sudden Oak Death was also found infecting plants in more than 200 nurseries nation-wide and in Canada. Sudden Oak Death is also found in nurseries across Europe and has spread to gardens and forests in at least the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. At least 40 North American tree, shrub and herb species are susceptible to Sudden Oak Death disease. Economic Consequences of Sudden Oak Death Tree removal and replacement in rural, urban and suburban communities. Failure to contain Sudden Oak Death will expose communities across the country to similar costs. If Sudden Oak Death spreads north into Oregon and Washington, the impacts could be severe. While Sudden Oak Death does not kill mature Douglas-fir, regulations aimed at preventing its spread could hinder movement of seedlings for replanting, and — possibly — logs. If Sudden Oak Death spreads to the East, it threatens large numbers of oaks. Benefits of Significantly Increased Funding If Sudden Oak Death is not effectively contained, it threatens forests and suburban areas across much of North America, potentially causing immense ecological and economic damage. The most likely way in which Sudden Oak Death might be spread is as a disease on nursery stock. Any lapse in implementation of the expanded nursery surveillance ... WHEREAS there is ample evidence that the death penalty is applied in a racist manner: In 1990, the U.S. General Accounting Office reported “a pattern of evidence indicating racial disparities in charging, sentencing and imposition of the death penalty.” Nationwide, 82 percent of those put to death had been convicted of murdering a white person, even though people of color are the victims in more than half of all homicides. Just over 50% of those on Ohio’s death row are African-American, although less than 12% of Ohio’s population is African-American. In a series of rulings since 1991, the Supreme Court has drastically restricted the rights of death row prisoners to appeal their convictions and death sentences in federal courts, even in cases where prisoners present compelling evidence of innocence. In 1996, new legislation drastically limited federal court review of death penalty appeals and gutted public funding of legal aid services for death row prisoners. WHEREAS the American Bar Association has concluded that administration of the death penalty is “a haphazard maze of unfair practices with no internal consistency” and has called for a moratorium on executions. WHEREAS Ohio has a prevalence of mentally ill people on its death row, and an examination of the way the state deals with mental illness and death row is sorely needed: Almost half of all death row prisoners are currently under some form of mental health treatment. Providers respond that they have provided the notice and that the DHS local office has not processed the death notification.http://www.state.il.us/agency/oig/docs/dnp.pdf. The OIG reviewed 963 deaths reported in the fourth quarter of FY 1997. On average, the client’s case record was not corrected for 171 days after date of death. In those 49 cases, a more in-depth study found 116 services supposedly provided to the client after death. First, nursing homes were instructed to simultaneously notify DHS’ Exception Processing Unit (EPU) when they notified the DHS local office of a patient’s death. In the late summer of 1999, DPA Director Ann Patla requested that the OIG coordinate a study to determine who is responsible for untimely notice upon the death of long term care patients with the purpose of factually identifying systemic weaknesses and determining if specific problems had been mitigated. This process would ensure automatic reconciliation for inactive cases that had been canceled for reasons other than death. Review Process The workgroup first decided to focus on the long term care facilities with the highest incidences of overpayments due to late notice of death. The top 26 such providers represented 627 long term care clients whose deaths occurred between January 1, 1999 and June 30, 1999. They were split nearly equally between those with payments after death and those for which no overpayment occurred. The study’s primary goal was to identify whether nursing homes or DHS local offices are responsible for late case cancellations due to death. To do that, reviewers tried to determine: 1) the correct date of death; 2) if the long term care facility ... Death is a subject best confronted when it is not present, for then the mind is able to think about it with a quietude, and so examine it from many angles.http://www.newchurch.org/sermons/text/pdf/DeathandResurrection.pdf. It is a certainty that each one of us will die, and each one of us will be affected by the death of other people. Our belief in a life after death defines to a great degree how we respond to death. To believe in the Lord is also to believe in a life after death. In one sense we can say that by believing in a life after death we are also believing in the power and omnipotence of the Lord--His power because He can undo that which no one else can undo: death; His omnipotence, because he Lord releases each and every person from the bonds of death. In the Word the Lord shows His power over death. When Jesus heard that, He said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Thus the Lord allowed Lazarus to die in order to demonstrate His power over death. Death, then, is a natural conclusion to our life in this world, and it introduces us into spiritual life. At death the body is left behind, and the spirit is resurrected into a new life. Many theories have evolved over the thousands of years that people have contemplated death. Death, we are told, is a continuation of life, not physical but spiritual. For many people, in spite of the assurances given about death, the subject still contains things that bring about fear: fear of the unknown, fear of separation from loved ones, fear of punishment. The message given to us, therefore, is to really consider death--our deaths. The spiritual world, when ...
