Around the time of this journal’s first volume, the concept of programmed cell death (PCD), i.http://www.bio.unc.edu/Faculty/Jones/PDF/pcd2001.pdf.e. the cell’s active participation in its own demise, was introduced using the example of a plant cell infected by a fungus1. Death during an incompatible interaction between a plant and a pathogen was proposed to function as a physical block to further pathogen ingress. His publication marked the revival of interest in programmed cell death in the mod-ern era, a decade before Kerr and Wylie3 coined the term ‘apoptosis’ to describe the first cell death morphotype in animal cells. Research up to the 70’s focused primarily on the cytology of death, biochemical characteri-zation of dying cells, and the discovery of survival-and death-inducing signals. I intend to take a broad view of plant cell death, and from it, identify features of cell death that are shared among all PCD. Most of the evidence was published in the 1990’s in the form of pharmacological studies showing that death can be inhibited, thus eliminating the possibility that death is a consequence of metabolic run-down. Andrew Groover found that death occurring in these cells is initiated by auxin and cytokinin and utilizes a defined signal transduction pathway that includes a calcium flux shown to be necessary and sufficient to initiate death 10. Today, the concepts of cell death and cell corpse processing in animals are confused because the morphology of the dead (dying) cell is often used to describe the ‘type of cell death’. For example, the presence of apoptotic bodies and DNA ladder-ing are two hallmarks of apoptotic death, but they represent time points well beyond ... In 2004, the King County Medical Examiner's Office investigated 114 deaths of children and youth ages 19 years or younger, which represented 6% (114/1,863) of the total deaths investigated.http://www.metrokc.gov/health/examiner/2004report/children.pdf. In addition to investigating childhood deaths, the King County Medical Examiner participates in Child Death Review, a process which discusses these deaths in detail and formulates prevention strategies. Of the 37 natural deaths of children and youth investigated by the Medical Examiner, 57% (21/37) were of infants less than one year of age. Of these 21 infants who died of natural causes, 11 were due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). There were 18 children and youth whose deaths were classified as accidental, excluding traffic-related accidents. Another 28 children and youths died in traffic related accidents. There were 18 homicides among children and youth. Of these 18 homicide victims, 10 were teenagers (13 - 19 years of age) and eight were children under 12 years. Forty-four percent (8/18) of the children and youth homicide victims died by firearms. There were eight youth suicides, all between the ages of 13 and 19 years. Males comprised 63% (5/8) of the victims. There were three motor vehicle driver deaths and 18 motor vehicle passenger deaths among teenagers. There was one teenage motorcycle driver death in 2004. There were no teenage pedestrian deaths in 2004. The following tables list the causes of death among children and youth for all manners in three age groups: less than 1 year, 1-12 years and 13-19 years. A death certificate or copy of act of death is indispensable to simplify steps when settling a deceased person's estate and terminating government programs.http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/publications/DEP-30-death.pdf. These civil status documents can be obtained after declaring the death to the Directeur de l'état civil (registrar of civil status), who will enter it in the register of civil status and thereby establish the act of death. Proof of death is established by an act of death (Article 102 of the Civil Code of Québec). How to declare a death Two documents are required to declare a death: the Attestation of death The Attestation of death is an official confirmation of a person's death, generally prepared by a doctor. It states the name and sex of the deceased and the place, date and time of death. If a funeral director takes charge of the body, he will give the Declaration of death to the person responsible for declaring the death and help that person make the declaration. The Declaration of death transcribes all information from the Attestation of death and adds the place and date of birth of the deceased, last home address, names of father and mother, and the place and mode of disposal of the body. Once the Declaration of death is completed and signed, the funeral director sends it without delay to the Directeur de l'état civil along with the two copies of the Attestation of death and the deceased's health insurance card. After verifying the documents received, the Directeur de l'état civil draws up the act of death, enters it in the register of civil status, and notes the death in the deceased's act of birth and act of marriage or civil ... The public prosecutor’s department in The Hague has closed the investigation into the death of Mr.http://www.un.org/icty/pressreal/2006/p1063-omen.pdf. Milosevic. The public prosecutor has come to the conclusion that Mr. Milosevic died a natural death and that there are no indications that the death resulted from crime. Mr. Milosevic was found motionless on his bed in his cell on Saturday, March 11, 2006 in the morning at around 10 a.m. Already earlier, at around 9.00 a.m., guards had knocked on the door. They assumed that he did not react to the wake-up call because he was asleep and only entered his cell at 10.00 a.m. At 10.30 a.m. a physician of the Penitentiary Institution of the United Nations established his death, after which the medical examiner was called in at the request of the Tribunal. Because the cause of death did not immediately become clear, the medical examiner did not issue a statement of a natural death. The time of the decease is, according to the report of the medical examiner, presumably March 11 at around 7.45 a.m., but in any case between 7 and 9 a.m. The body was seized by the public prosecutor in order to perform a judicial autopsy and was transferred to the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI). At the request of the Tribunal they waited half a day so that two Serbian pathologists could be present during the autopsy on March 12. The NFI invited a Belgian pathologist to attend the autopsy as an observer. A request was received on Sunday, March 12 from the side of Milosevic’s family to allow a Russian physician to be present during the autopsy. In view of the time passed from the moment of the decease, however, this turned out not to be possible ... Actually we don’t - despite modern scientific medicine the death rate remains pegged at 100%.http://www.islandnet.com/theologo/death.pdf. So having finished our taxes I thought maybe it would be time to talk about that other inevitable in life, death. I realize this is not always a comfortable subject - every year that passes my own discomfort seems to increase, but it is the gospel that death has been overcome. In the Western world whether people are religious in any sense of the word or not, the subject of death makes us uneasy - we try to ignore it both in our language and our customs and hope that maybe it will go away. We are however interested in beliefs about life after death or even empirical evidence that it happens. Nonetheless it is true that the question of life after death has interested human beings for some time now though not all cultures have believed in an after life of any significance. Most of the Old Testament has no belief in anything resembling a life after death. But you also get a person like Jesus Ben Sirach, another writer found in the Apocrypha, who was a pious devout Jew but quite convinced that there was no life after death. I think then this book of Jesus ben Sirach puts an interesting question to us; is the service of God worthwhile in itself even if we were absolutely sure it did not lead to a sort of gift, namely life after death? Is the central message of Christianity based on gaining bliss and avoiding punishment in a world to come - or is it based on the worthwhileness of love, service, and worship that are essentially complete in themselves, though they have indeed the additional effect of transcending death? At all events, ... Disregard for Human Life We oppose the death penalty primarily because its use disregards the dignity of human life and the inherent dignity of each person. There is no doubt that the state has an obligation to promote the common good by punishing criminals and preventing the recurrence of crime. Furthermore, those who commit brutal crimes such as murder are certainly deserving of a punishment proportionate to the gravity of their offense. However, we believe that the state should not respond to the violence of brutal crimes with the violence of capital punishment. When there are means available to punish criminals and protect society from the recurrence of crime (e.g., life in prison without parole), the use of capital punishment is both unnecessary and undesirable. Because these means exist, Pope John Paul II stated that the use of capital punishment should be limited only to extremely rare situations where it is necessary to defend society (Evangelium Vitate, #56). Wrongful Convictions and the Death Penalty Besides disregarding human life and the inherent dignity of each person, the use of the death penalty is troubling because over the past two decades more than 100 people have been wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death in our country, only to be later released after DNA or other evidence proved their innocence. Even our own State of Arizona has witnessed innocent people sitting on death row whose lives were spared because of recent breakthroughs ... The crude death rate was 849.http://www.state.nj.us/health/chs/stats03/mort03.pdf.8 per 100,000 population and the age-adjusted death rate was 791.7 per 100,000 population. For diseases, the median age at death was 79 and for injuries, the median age at death was 45. On average there were 201 deaths of New Jersey residents each day in 2003. For residents under the age of 15 and between 25 and 44 years, death rates declined by one-third. White and Black males had higher age-specific death rates than females for every age group, but the same was not true for Hispanics and Asians/Pacific Islanders. The statewide age-adjusted death rate due to heart disease was 232.2 in 2003. Nearly two-thirds of the deaths due to unintentional injury were motor-vehicle related. While death rates for the other four leading causes displayed no clear trend from 1994-2003, the death rate for suicide among 15-24 year olds declined fairly steadily and was 30% lower in 2003 than in 1994 (Table DT11 and Figure DT14). From 1995 to 2003, there was a small but steady decline in the death rate due to cancer among those 65 and over. Leading causes of death varied by race and ethnicity. The ten leading causes of death for Whites were the same as for the population as a whole, which is to be expected since 80% of decedents were White. Alzheimer’s disease was the seventh leading cause of death among Whites while it was ranked tenth overall. For all of the ten leading causes of death except diabetes, age-adjusted death rates for Hispanics were lower than for Whites. Death rates are computed per 100,000 estimated population aged 5-14 years. ** The number of deaths is too small to calculate reliable rates. See ... Sudden Cardiac Death is defined by the American Heart Association on their website as "the sudden, abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease.http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/PDF/OSCardiacDeath.pdf." The website (www.americanheart.org) goes on to say, "Sudden cardiac death is a major health problem, causing about 340,000 deaths each year among U.S. adults." For the first time in this NFPA study of on-duty firefighter deaths, we are using the term 'sudden cardiac death' as an umbrella term to include heart attacks as well as other heart-related deaths. Of the 1,006 on-duty firefighter fatalities over the 10-year period, 440 (43.7 percent) fell into the category -- sudden cardiac death. (Over the same period, there were also 15 deaths due to strokes and eight due to aneurysms.) Over the 10-year period, the annual number of sudden cardiac deaths has ranged from a high of 51 in 1999 to its lowest level of 37 in 2002. As reported earlier, there were 48 such deaths in 2004. Looking back to 1977, when NFPA first began this annual study of firefighter fatalities, we find a much higher number of deaths each year -- an average of 60 deaths a year from 1977 through 1986 (Figure 1). The number of sudden cardiac deaths annually has fallen by approximately one third from the late 1970s to the most recent three-year period. However, since the early 1990s, the number of deaths each year has tended to fluctuate between 40 and 50. Autopsies or post mortem information (such as death certificates) are sought for all reported firefighter fatalities. Such information was available for 308 of the 440 victims of sudden cardiac death. Sudden cardiac ... We live in an environment where death is invisible and denied, yet we have become desensitized to it.http://www.sagepub.com/upm-data/5324_Mckenry_Chapter_4.pdf. In this chapter, we address enduring processes related to death in the family as well as some changes that have occurred since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The changes described above have increased the stress that families expe-rience when coping with death. It should be noted, however, that Rosenblatt (2000) found sparse reference to any personal health problems in the narratives of bereaved parents regarding their children’s deaths or dying. Horacek’s (1995) heuristic model identifies tasks related to high-grief deaths and views grief responses as both reactive and proactive. Although scholars have focused on dying or bereaved individuals, death does not occur in isolation. Such waves exist in an environment of denied emotional dependence and may seem unrelated to the death. Below, we discuss briefly a number of factors that have been identified as related to death itself and to how society’s interpretation of a loss influences family adaptation. When the duration of time before death is far longer or shorter than expected, or the sequence of death in a family differs from the expected order, problems may occur. In a longitudinal study of parents surviving a child’s sudden death, Murphy, Johnson, Wu, Fan, and Lohan (2003) found that marital satisfaction decreased among the parents during the 5 years following the death; nearly 70% said that it took them 3 to 4 years to put their children’s deaths in perspective, and at 5 years post-death, 43% said they still had not found meaning in their children’s ... The causal agent of sudden oak death (SOD, also know as Phytophthora canker disease), Phytophthora ramorum, was first identified in 1993 in Germany and The Netherlands on ornamental rhododendrons.http://www.csrees.usda.gov/nea/pest/pdfs/suddenoakdeath_pest_alert.pdf. P. ramorum was isolated in June 2000 from dying trees in California. Since its discovery in North America, P. ramorum has been confirmed in forests in California and Oregon and in nurseries in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The geographic origin of P. ramorum is unknown. Before the mid-1990s, there were no reports of this species in the United States or Europe. P. ramorum’s limited known geographical distribution in relation to its hosts’ distribution suggests it was recently introduced into the United States. The European and North American populations are thought to be distinct populations transported independently from another location, perhaps the site of origin. Host Range P. ramorum causes two types of diseases, bark cankers that may kill the host and foliar blights that may serve as a reservoir for the pathogen. In response to the identification of P. ramorum, the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA–APHIS) has developed a list of regulated hosts. Tanoak is the most susceptible bark canker host. The list of regulated foliar hosts is extensive and expanding. Tree death may occur within several months to several years after initial infection. These organisms may contribute to the death of the tree.
