Whether in response to a stranger or startling noise, your dog may display certain body postures, including lowering his head, flattening his ears back against his head, and tucking his tail between his legs if he’s scared.. A frightened dog may also pant, salivate, tremble, pace, or try to escape. In extreme cases of fearfulness, a dog may be destructive (out of general anxiety or in an attempt to escape), or he may lose control of his bladder or bowels. Causes of Fearful Behavior Determining why your dog is fearful is helpful but not always essential to treating the fearful behavior, although the reason for his fear will dictate the relative success of the treatment. A dog who is genetically predisposed to general fearfulness, or a dog who was improperly socialized during a critical stage in his development, will probably not respond as well to treatment as a dog who has developed a fear in response to a specific experience. It’s essential, however, to first rule out any medical causes for your dog’s fearful behavior. Your first step should be to take your dog to your veterinarian for a thorough medical evaluation. After you’ve ruled out medical causes, your first step in dealing with your dog’s fearful behavior is to identify what triggers his fear. If your dog’s fears are rooted in either of these scenarios, see our related tip sheets on these topics. How to Use the Desensitization Technique Begin by exposing your dog to a very low level or small amount of whatever is causing his fear. For example, if he is afraid of bicycles, start with a bicycle placed at a distance of 100 feet from your dog. As long as ... In recognition of our role in the assistance dog community, the following behavioral guidelines were voted on and passed unanimously at our February, 2007 Board meeting.http://www.dogsaver.org/adc/Behaviors.pdf. 2. All assistance dogs and dogs in training must exhibit appropriate public access behavior. 3. Any dog that barks or shows other aggressive behaviors such as growling, lunging, putting up their ruff, snapping or biting will be asked to leave if it is in a public place. If we are having a training meeting we will be glad to help the team work on the behavior. Of course, the club member is always welcome as well as the assistance dog when re-training is successful. 4. All dogs are to be on leash and must be under physical leash or harness control of their partners or another responsible adult at all times. Any dog that moves away from its partner and solicits attention from another dog or person will be excused from the meeting. Dogs may not be left on Stays and have handlers moving away. 5. All assistance dogs must be handled with respect and be trained using humane training methods. Though a trained assistance dog may occasionally need to have its behavior corrected hitting or kicking a dog is not in keeping with humane training. While we may feel that we know our own dogs quite well, it is always important to understand that we have a responsibility to be aware of the fact that another member’s dog may have recently experienced some type of trauma and would be uncomfortable if your dog is free to “get into his/her space”. We owe it to our fellow members to maintain control of our dogs at all times. This dog registration is valid until January 31, 2008.http://www.co.greene.oh.us/auditor/forms/dogtag_2007.pdf. Puppy raisers take 12 to 14 months out of their lives to socialize a puppy for guide dog training programs. Puppy Club is currently raising seven guide dog puppies. Two volunteers and eight youth are responsible for teaching the Guide Dog Puppies how to behave in the house and in public. The puppy raiser’s goal is to develop their Guide Dog Puppy into a mature, dependable dog. The 4- H’ers can see how a blind person benefits from a working Guide Dog. Ada County 4-H has raised 18 Guide Dog Puppies and returned them to Guide Dogs for the Blind for further training. The independence that a Guide Dog can give a visually impaired person is well documented. When Willette, her Guide Dog Puppy arrived, she joined the White Pine 4-H club. This membership bonded her with the other 4-H’ers struggling with the work of raising Guide Dog Puppies. This shy, self-conscious 12 year old has blossomed because of her experiences in 4-H. She attended a special graduation ceremony for Willette who graduated as a breeder for the Guide Dog program. Tiffany received her Guide Dog Puppy as a transfer pup to finish raising. The puppy gave her a reason to live; there were many important and exciting new things to learn and to teach to the dog. Her greatest joy is to contribute to her community through the Guide Dog program. Tiffany and her family attended her Guide Dog Puppy’s graduation. If a dog never chews a shoe during the first year of his life the odds are pretty good that it won’t occur to him to do it when given the opportunity at a later age.. Diligence on your part for a relatively short time when you first bring a dog home promises years of problem free living with your dog, but if a bad habit is allowed to form you might spend years battling it. Dog’s are born with the instinct to keep their den clean so confining a dog in a crate prevents the dog from relieving himself until you take him outside. The crate is not only a good way to keep your dog and your belongings safe, but it helps promote a better bond with your dog. It’s hard to bond with a dog who has shredded your new leather couch! When you feel your dog is behaving well in the house you can try giving him short periods of unsupervised house freedom. You might just find that your dog will object, though. If you’re ready to give crate training a try we recommend the following: $ Make sure the crate is the proper size, which means your dog can stand and turn around comfortably. If introduced and used properly the crate will become a den for your dog, a place where he feels safe and can $ $ $ $ $ get away from things if he chooses. A dog who tends to chew the couch can be crated as a preventative when you can’t supervise him, but a dog who has just chewed up the couch should not be placed in the crate for hours as a form of punishment. A baby gate in the doorway of a small room is an acceptable alternative if the room is dog-proofed.
