The world of dog geneticists, oncologists, veterinarians and dog owners is about to change.http://www.bullmastiff.org/SWBC/dog_project_info.pdf. The Canine Genome Sequencing Project, based here in Boston at the Broad Institute at Harvard and MIT, finished sequencing the dog genome this summer. This devastating cancer is a significant health concern in large dog breeds, affecting roughly 10-15% of Rottweilers and 10-30% of track Greyhounds. o Healthy dogs: If you have a healthy dog (especially a dog 8 years or older), we would really appreciate a blood sample. Please let us know if your dog has had any type of cancer. o If your dog has osteosarcoma, please ask your veterinarian to draw a blood sample and send it to us together with the clinical information. We would like to obtain a blood sample from your dog. A blood draw may cause a slight momentary discomfort to your dog as the needle is inserted. This should only cause your dog marginal short-term discomfort and not have any major consequences. If your dog becomes aggressive and/or bites during the blood sampling process, the Canine Genome Project and the Broad Institute are not liable in any way for any resultant physical harm or property damage. Compensation is not available in the unlikely event of physical harm to your dog resulting from the blood draw procedure. Only the “Osteosarcoma mapping project” research staff will see research information and specimens that can identify your dog. Any studies utilizing your dog’s oral/blood tissue sample will occur with the understanding that none of your dog’s unique identifiers (name, AKC number, etc.) will be distributed or published. Dog Owner’s Statement: I have ...

When you feel frustrated with your dog’s behavior, remember that someone must teach a dog what is acceptable behavior and what is not.http://www.uvhs.org/behavioral_docs/the_benefits_of_an_educated_dog.pdf. A dog that hasn’t been given any instructions, training or boundaries can’t possibly know what you expect of him. By teaching your dog how you want him to behave, you’ll not only have a saner household, but a healthier and happier dog as well. An Educated Dog: Allows you to handle every part of his body, to check for injury or illness and to give him medication. The more time you spend with your dog, the more likely you’ll be to notice when something is wrong with him, like a limp, a cough, a sensitive area or a loss of appetite. Will walk or run beside you on a leash without pulling, dragging or strangling, so you and your dog can get more exercise and spend more time together. No matter what danger may be imminent, a dog that is suddenly still is suddenly safe. And a dog that will "stay" in that position is even safer. Less stress means a healthier dog. By training your dog, you can help prevent tragedy and develop a better relationship with him. Keep in mind, however, that even an educated dog needs supervision, instruction and boundaries Allowing your dog, no matter how educated he may be, to walk, run or roam outside of a fenced area or off of a leash, is putting him in danger. The Upper Valley Training Center offers dog and puppy training classes several times a week. Our Behavior Helpline is also available for more serious dog behavior problems: 603-448-6888 extension 103. Keep your Dog Stick with you at all times.http://www.bulliray.com/DogStickInstructions_2004.pdf. Place the grip of the Dog Stick firmly in your hand, keeping the ball extended outward in case of attack. When using your handheld to input information rest the Dog Stick under your arm. Having to retrieve the Dog Stick from the ground will make you appear more submissive. Your Dog Stick should be extended in front of you as you enter the yard or until you have had a chance to completely evaluate the dog or dogs confronting you. If you are familiar with the dog(s), and are in a non-threatening situation, hold the stick down along your side, making it part of your body. You will still want to have the Dog Stick with you in case the dog becomes aggressive, or another dog has been added to the home. Extend the Dog Stick out in front of you, waving the ball side to side to see if the dog will target the ball instead of you. If the dog grabs the stick “GO WITH THE DOG”. If the dog is just chewing on the ball but not moving, push the dog in the direction of the gate or your vehicle. If the dog has a tight hold on the Dog Stick and you are through the gate and you are safe, let the Dog Stick go! At this point the Dog Stick should be used to keep the dog at bay. Keep your Dog Stick in front of you following the movements of the dog. Use the Dog Stick to protect you if the dog attacks, when striking the dog, swing the Dog Stick in a back hand motion across your body (you should be standing with a side posture), never stand frontal to the dog. If the dog were to get to you before you can defend yourself you can at least deflect the dog away by just lifting your arm, protecting your face, ...

Dog parks, places where dogs can play "off-lead," are being created all over the country.http://www.amdogs.org/images/A_Dog_Park_in_Your_Community.pdf. As with any proposal, the specifics of what will work in a particular city or town will vary with factors such as available places for dog parks, funding, cooperation with city or town officials and the responsibility and commitment of dog owners. This guide is a resource to assist individuals, cities and towns, park & recreation departments, animal control departments and dog-owners groups with creating a successful dog park in their community. WHAT IS A DOG PARK? A dog park is a public park (usually fenced) designated specifically for the use of dogs and their owners and possibly managed by the users in cooperation with the city/town it is in. A "dog run" commonly refers to a smaller type of "dog park" that consists of fenced in area, often located within an existing park. WHY DOG PARKS? Dog parks improve the quality of urban life for city dwellers with dogs. Dog parks benefit the whole city not just dogs and their owners. Dog parks promote public health and safety by containing dogs and their waste. There are over 600 dog parks nationwide, and more open every day. In our increasingly crowded urban environment, regulated and fenced-in dog parks will provide a valuable benefit to dogs, dog-owners, and non dog-owners alike. Dog parks generally are sized to accommodate the local dog population and can range up to several acres. Scattering dog parks or dog runs throughout the city like tennis courts in neighborhood parks is a way to make parks accessible to dog owners. Convincing city officials that there is ...

If you encounter a strange dog: Do not scream.http://www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/acc/documents/dog_bite_prevent_tips.pdf. This may excite the dog even more. Do not throw things at the dog. The dog may chase you. Do not turn your back on the dog. Avoid making eye contact with the dog. Once the dog loses interest, slowly back away until the dog is out of sight. If the dog attacks, "feed" it a jacket, purse, backpack or any other object to create a barrier between you and the dog. If the dog knocks you down, curl into a ball, protect your ears and the back of your neck with your arms and remain motionless. Never approach a dog that is tied up in a yard. Never reach through a fence to pet a dog. Never try to pet a dog that is in a car. Never bother a dog that is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies. When you pet a dog: Always let the dog see you first. If the dog seems comfortable with you, gently pet the dog in the back (not on the head - that's too close to the mouth, which contains those sharp teeth!)

The following tips will make walks safer and more enjoyable for you, your dog and your neighbors.http://www.muni.org/iceimages/healthmsd/Urban_Dog_Etiquette1.pdf. Most cities and counties have some form of leash, license and pick-up-after-your-dog laws. These ordinances are designed to pro-tect both the dog and the community at large. When leashed, a dog is safe from traffic and unable to follow his instincts to chase children, investigate garbage cans or dig up landscaping. Whether a dog is friendly or aggressive, a leash keeps him in check and allows the public to pass undisturbed. Retractable leashes should not be used in areas frequented by joggers, skaters or cyclists; the thin line blends into the background and, all too often, athlete and dog collide. Licensing a dog enables an animal control agency to return a lost pet to his rightful owner. In addition, the number of licenses issued gives government officials an idea of how many dogs are in the community, statistics that are very helpful when planning dog runs, shelter expansions and the like. And no one enjoys maneuvering through unsightly piles of dog waste when out for a stroll. Train your dog to urinate in gutters or on nonliving vertical surfaces, such as lampposts or hydrants. When you’re waiting at a traffic light, a dog in a sit-stay is out of harm’s way. And while walking nicely on a loose leash is enough for most forays, there are times when your dog will need to be at heel position, which keeps her under control at your side. Whether he’s being tantalized by chicken bones or a jogger, getting your dog to break eye contact with “forbidden fruit” before he acts enables you to draw his attention ...
