No one could have anticipated the enormous popularity of the city’s dog parks! General description A winter trail system consisting of a series of loops that allow dog mushers (and other non-motorized trail users) to travel 3, 5, 7, or 9 miles depending on the route one takes. The trails traverse large swamps and Black Spruce forests and are generally wide enough for one dog sled (3-5’). In some places along the trails the tracks are wide enough for two sleds to pass. The trails must be traveled in a specific direction to avoid conflict with dog teams. They are well marked with directional indicators and colors to indicate the length of the loop. Trail uses It is available for use by non-members during ‘non-racing’ days only but fees are charged. Daily fee of $5, or seasonal pass for $25. Cross-country skiing and skijoring are allowed, but must yield to dog teams. Many local professional dog mushers use this area for training and the Montana Creek Dog Mushers use it for races. Please check with the Montana Creek Dog Mushers Club for their race schedule and possible trail closures before using the trails. From nips to bites to actual attacks, dog bites are a serious problem. Dog bite victims requiring medical attention in the United States number approximately 800,000 annually. On average, about a dozen people die each year from dog bites. Statistically, the number of recorded dog bites are significantly higher in children than adults. The elderly and home service providers such as mail carriers and meter readers are also high on the list of frequent dog bite victims. Caution: never leave a baby or child alone with a dog. What’s a dog owner to do? Gradually expose your puppy to a variety of situations under controlled circumstances; continue that exposure on a regular basis as your dog gets older. Because so many dog bites happen to young children, it is suggested that parents wait to get a dog until their children are older than 4 years of age. Try to stay still until the dog leaves, or back away slowly until the dog is out of sight. Even if the bite can be explained (perhaps someone stepped on the dog’s tail), it’s important to take responsibility for your dog’s actions by taking these steps: • If your own dog bit you, confine it immediately and call your veterinarian to check your dog’s vaccination records. Next, contact authorities and tell them everything you can about the dog: the owner’s name, if you know it; the color and size of the dog; where you encountered the dog; and, if and where you’ve seen it before. Additionally, each type of collar is designed to fit the dog in a different way. An improperly fitted collar will not work in the manner it is designed to and can cause injury to the dog. This type of collar fits around the dog’s neck, just above where the neck meets the shoulder. This means if the dog becomes caught or “hung up” on something, the leather collar is more likely to break and free the animal than a nylon collar; however, a leather collar is not a “breakaway” collar. In order to avoid a tight collar, measure the size of your dog’s neck before purchasing a collar. Dog Size A harness will not place pressure on the dog’s throat because it is fits around the dog’s chest and ribcage. To find your dog’s harness size, simply measure the size around your dog’s girth and add about two inches. There is a nose loop and a neck strap, and is an excellent solution for a dog that pulls when it is being lead, or for a large dog with a small child. Your cooperation and compliance with the following guidelines is essential to ensure dog access, your safety, resource protection, and an enjoyable experience for everyone using the trails. Hikers, bicyclists, equestrians, runners, small children, senior citizens, dog-walkers, photographers, people in wheelchairs, bird watchers, and other nature study groups are all out on the trails exploring open space. Communicate with others, and keep your dog quiet and under control. Visitors can let their dog off-leash in the 17.5 acres in the center of the Preserve, accessible from the Cordilleras Trail, the Polly Geraci/Hassler Trails, and the Blue Oak Trail. While in this area, visitors must have a leash in their possession and their dog must be under voice control. Dog waste can pose a health hazard and a public nuisance. Keeping your dog on leash ensures that your dog will not startle other unsuspecting visitors who may also be using the preserves and helps reduce conflicts with other visitors. It also lessens the chance that another visitor, or dog, may be bitten, no matter how unlikely it may seem to occur. Protecting your dog. Leashes can keep your dog safe from wildlife. Housetraining is a human concept and is contradictory to the basic nature of being a dog. When the dogs live as dogs in the dog/dog world they do not need bladder control because when they have to go they just go. The only instinctual dog behaviors regarding their potty habits are the dogs do not like to potty where they eat or where they sleep. This also seems to hold true in many cases for where the dog is playing at a given time. For example, in the yard, when you are playing fetch with your dog or if two dogs are playing together and they need to potty, they will often stop, step to the side and potty and then return to the play session. I have discussed these behaviors to explain the only truly “instinctual” dog potty behaviors. However, we choose to bring the dogs into our human/dog world. If the owner happens to provide potty access at the needed times, the dog will appear to be housetrained except for the occasional accidents when the potty access was not provided when the dog’s bladder size dictated. Another scenario of needing to housetrain an adult dog can occur when you adopt an adult dog from a shelter, rescue group, another person, or take in a stray and the dog has not been previously housetrained. It can be because the dog was a stray for an extended period of time and reconnected with the normal potty habits of a dog living on its own. Because a dog cannot verbalize its reactions, many times a minor scare escalates into a full-blown panic before the dog’s owner is even aware of a problem. Treatment of a dog’s fears varies, depending on the individual dog, its temperament and the cause of the fear, if that can be determined. The umbrella is gradually moved closer to the dog (systematic desensitization) until the dog ignores its presence.
