Dog walkers provide essential exercise and socialization for our dogs and puppies.http://www.aikenspca.org/Volunteer_Information_for_Dog_Walkers_-_updated_8-6-2007.pdf. Age Requirement - All dog walkers must be at least 16 years of age. Hours – Dog Walkers are welcome at the shelter Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm and on Saturday between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm. You may walk any adult dog in the adoption wing. Enter the dog adoption wing. at it from the front... Slip this loop over the dog’s head and it will be the dog’s collar/ lead for his walk. Select a dog you wish to walk. Most of our kennels contain more than one dog/puppy. Removing only one dog for a walk can be a challenge. Buddy up with another dog walker if possible. Meet the dog from the outside of the kennel first to evaluate the animal's behavior. 1. If the dog gives even the slightest hint of being aggressive, do not enter the kennel. Keep at least 6 feet between you and any other dog walker with a dog from a different kennel. If you have buddied up with dog walker and you are both walking a dog from the same kennel, it is fine to walk together as we already know the two dogs get along with each other. Clean dog bedding, toys, and bowls are located in the room just to your left as you enter the dog adoption wing.

(1) The Newfoundland dog is an important symbol of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.http://www.cdli.ca/CITE/newfoundland_dog.pdf. This breed of dog was developed from other breeds brought to the island by European fishermen and settlers hundreds of years ago. Some people have claimed it could have developed from a dog brought here by the Vikings. There are stories that the Viking explorer Lief Eriksson arrived in Vinland with a “bear-like” dog on his ship. It was also bred with the Saint Bernard, the famous land-based rescue dog, to improve the Bernard’s coat. Whatever its origins, the dog has developed some unique characteristics that make it suited to the land and sea and climate of its native land. (3) The Newfoundland dog has a full water resistant double coat of long fur. The thick fur protects the dog from the freezing cold waters surrounding Newfoundland. (4) The Newfoundland dog has large powerful legs. This proved very helpful to fishermen who first used it as a working dog. This gentleness makes the dog a safe and reliable companion and protector of children. The dog will not threaten or growl as other breeds do. Many pictures of the dog taken in the early 1900's show the dog harnessed to a wagon or sled. 1. In the space below, list the characteristics of the Newfoundland dog that make it great: As a rescue dog: 3. The Newfoundland dog is a reliable rescue dog because it has the _?_ to act by itself when it senses something is wrong.

PETCO encourages you to adopt your new dog from a shelter or another reputable animal welfare organization, rather than buy from breeders or pet stores.http://www.petco.com/caresheets/dog/Dog_FindingPerfectDog.pdf. The decision to add a dog to your family is exciting, and sometimes overwhelming. What type of dog is best for your family and current situation? Before making a definite decision on the right breed for your family, ask yourself some honest questions: 1) What exactly does your family expect from this dog? A dog is a family pet, and everyone in the family needs to understand what your dog can and cannot do. Roughhousing with some breeds can lead to aggression or injury to the dog. Be certain everyone is clear on what they want from the family dog, and try to choose your breed accordingly. If one breed can’t “do it all”, you may want to become a multi-dog household. 2) How much time do you have to spend with a dog? If most of the family is away from the house most of the time, perhaps a dog is not the right companion for you at this time. As a rule, short-haired coats tend to be “wash and wear,” longer hair may need scissoring, clipping, plucking or even occasional shaving to look its best and to keep the dog’s skin healthy. Carefully research your preferred dog’s grooming needs. Match your dog’s exercise needs with your own activity level. First time dog owners might be best served by adopting a young adult dog from a knowledgeable shelter rather than purchasing a puppy. First time dog owners might do best adopting a young adult mix breed from a shelter that can give them good information on the dog’s current and expected temperament.

Losing a dog can cause panic, fear, and heartache.http://www.petco.com/caresheets/dog/Dog_LostOrFound.pdf. How do you locate your lost dog? What should you do if you find a dog? An Ounce of Prevention There is no foolproof way to assure that your dog will never get lost. Make certain that your dog ALWAYS wears some form of identification, such as a tag, microchip or tattoo. "Lost: Big Brown Dog 555-1212" covers the most important facts. Make sure they know that your dog is missing, and what she looks like. Be sure to warn them if your dog is shy or distrustful of strangers or children. In that case, have the children come get you if they find your dog, rather than trying to catch the dog themselves. Also, people who spend time outdoors are more likely to see your dog than those who stay indoors. You can place a free Lost Dog classified ad there, and check ads placed by people who have found dogs. While you can use this site to search local shelters, it may take several days for a shelter to post a newly found dog. If your dog has a microchip or other identification information, you have a much higher chance of finding your dog or having her returned to you. Call Animal Control if you do not feel comfortable approaching the dog, or if the dog seems aggressive. If you want to adopt the dog, most shelters will give you first chance if the dog isn't claimed.

If you have a new dog or puppy, you can use the crate to limit his access to the house until he learns all the house rules – like what he can and can’t chew on and where he can and can’t eliminate.http://www.hawaiianhumane.org/animalcare/pdfs/crate_train_dog.pdf. A crate is also a safe way of transporting your dog in the car, as well as a way of taking him places where he may not be welcome to run freely. If you properly train your dog to use the crate, he’ll think of it as his safe place and will be happy to spend time there when needed. Your dog’s crate should be just large enough for him to comfortably stand, lay down and turn around in. Crate training can take days or weeks, depending on your dog’s age, temperament and past experi-ences. First Step: Introduce Your Dog To The Crate Bring your dog over to the crate and talk to him in a happy tone of voice. Make sure the crate door is securely fastened opened so it won’t hit your dog and frighten him. To encourage your dog to enter the crate, drop some small food treats near it, then just inside the door, and finally, all the way inside the crate. Continue tossing treats into the crate until your dog will walk calmly all the way into the crate to get the food. Feeding Your Dog His Meals In The Crate After introducing your dog to the crate, begin feed-ing him his regular meals near the crate. If your dog is readily entering the crate when you begin Step 2, put the food dish all the way at the back of the crate. If your dog is still reluctant to en-ter the crate, put the dish only as far inside as he will readily go without becoming fearful or anxious. Once your dog stands comfortably in the crate to eat, close the door while he’s eating.

The Capital Kennel Club of Juneau offers this information to help you make a good decisions in getting the right dog for you.http://www.ckcoj.org/documents/A_dog_in_your_life.pdf. By a “quality” puppy or dog we do not mean one who will necessarily be a show-ring winner == or even a purebred -- we mean one that is of sound structure, health and temperament who will give you the same years of enjoyment that we have had with our dogs. Things to consider before getting a dog: A dog is a responsibility 365 days a year. A dog is a long-term commitment (10 to 15 years on the average). A dog is an ongoing expense. A dog is not a toy. You want your child to have a dog because puppies and children are so cute together. Bringing a dog into a family with children should be done only after careful consideration and planning. Parents must expect to be the primary caregiver of the puppy/dog. You don’t have time for your present dog, so you want him to have a “companion.” If you don’t have time for one dog, you won’t have time for two, Someone had a litter of puppies and they are so cute you just had to take one home with you. Coat: If you are allergic, can't stand dog hair in the house, or you don't have the time to brush the dog regularly, look for a breed with a smooth or wire coat. Some breeders advertise in Dog World or Dog Fancy. You may have trouble getting rescue organizations to ship a dog to you in Juneau, so be prepared to travel to pick your dog up.

With a quiet spirit, he endured mistreatment all his life, and it was our great pleasure to finally rescue him from a life that was never meant for a dog.http://www.wibordercollierescue.com/files/Searching_for_Your_Lost_Dog.pdf. And it is our desire that should you ever find yourself in the position of needing to know, this Lost Dog pamphlet will help save your dog's life. SHOULD YOUR DOG BECOME LOST:SHOULD YOUR DOG BECOME LOST: < If you have not located your dog after an hour of searching, fill out the lost dog flyer enclosed. Consider order-ing more than one, if you have more than one collar for your dog and to have a spare on hand, and you may want to consider ordering a tag with contact information for your vacation home or any place where you travel frequently with your dog.
