The dog earns points for each obstacle performed correctly.

Test your dog's socialization skills off leash with a friend's dog before taking him or her to the dog park.

Let the dog sniff you first, then pet the dog's sides or back gently.

For safety reasons, each volunteer can only handle one dog at a time.

If the dog begs for food, it isn't because it is h u n g ry, but because it is trying to attain dominance over its owner.

Why your dog barks

Dogs that play during the regular day care do get dirty.

Some dog walkers, particularly those in large urban areas, walk more than one dog at a time.

Puppy raisers take 12 to 14 months out of their lives to socialize a puppy for guide dog training programs.

Providing your puppy or dog with an indoor kennel crate can satisfy many dogs

You should never pet a working guide dog without asking the handler's permission.

Fatal attacks represent a small proportion of dog bite injuries to humans and, therefore, should not be the primary factor driving public policy concerning dangerous dogs.

For example, an owner will be responsible for civil damages for the destruction of livestock or fowl off of the dog owner's premises (plus the costs of the suit).

Competition with larger carnivores also likely keeps wild dog numbers low.

DOG HANDLER Each location will have a PAWS site manager who will assign a dog to your care and give you some basic information about the animal.http://www.pawschicago.org/htdocs/doghandler.pdf. Your primary responsibility is for the safety of your dog. Stay with your dog at all times. Please advise the site manager if you have to leave for any reason, and make sure that the dog is either put back securely in its crate or another dog handler (without a dog) has agreed to take responsibility for it. For safety reasons, each volunteer can only handle one dog at a time. Keep a secure and strong hold on the dog’s leash at all times. Make sure that you can handle a dog before taking her for a walk. Do not allow your dog to jump up on people! Always keep your dog separated from other dogs! When walking a dog near people or other dogs, always keep the dog on a short lead. Keep your dog’s face away from other dogs and children in order to minimize the risk of injuries. If a potential adopter wants a PAWS dog to meet their dog, please direct them to an Adoption Counselor. Please also be especially vigilant watching the behavior of children around your dog—you should protect your dog from tail pulling, poking, etc.—unfortunately many parents are oblivious of their children’s actions. This will help us promote the dog on the website, or give us clues to what type of home may be less suitable (for example, you may notice that your dog doesn’t care much for kids or other dogs).

It be-gins with Dorothy running away from home because her beloved dog Toto bit a neighbor.http://www.magdrl.org/forms/Prevent_Dog_Bites.pdf. There are approximately 4.5 million reported dog bites annually in the United States, but the majority of dog bites are never reported to local authorities. According to the American Medical Association, dog bites are the second leading cause of child-hood injury, surpassing playground accidents. DOG BITES CAN RESULT IN CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LIABILITY FOR OWNERS Many home insurance companies will not insure owners of certain dog breeds or dogs with a bite history. The Insurance Information Institute estimates that insurance companies pay roughly $345.5 million in dog bite liability claims. You can reduce the likelihood of your dog biting some-one by taking proactive measures: Socialize and positively train your dog. Most dogs can be socialized to not be aggressive; Do not let your dog run loose. Provide a fenced yard and leash your dog when off your property. Your dog may tolerate it, but others may not. Never stare a dog in the eyes. Never turn and run away from a dog. Never try to hug or kiss a strange dog. Never approach a strange dog without the owner’s Most children’s dog bite injuries occur during play with a dog they know.

Dogs have always played a big role in city pa rks, but their traditional position at the end of a lead has been upended by changing mores and a rising enthusiasm among dog owners for much more active play.http://www.tpl.org/content_documents/ccpe_Dog_Park_Report.pdf. By one estimate there are now at least 2,000 off-leash dog areas, ranging from small parks entirely devoted to canines to substantial cor-ners of larger green spaces—and the number is growing exponentially. Interestingly, in some cases the dog park issue has badly fragmented a city while in others it has been resolved harmoniously, even adding potency to the park constituency. But from the other side of the fence, the reaction is equally strong: “My kid happens to be a dog. Who says dog owners (and their opponents) don’t have a sense of humor? If one of them is suddenly peppered with dog droppings, or if someone is bitten while sunbathing, or if mothers start screaming at the owner of an off-leash dog, the whole city quickly hears about it. There are early indications that San Francisco’s off-leash dog battle might eventually be amenable to a negotiation, but this particular process is federally mandated and, as such, is so bureaucratic that it can easily take years. When asked if he was surprised that a dog park issue has gone so far, Mike Eng, a senior program manager with the conflict resolu-tion institute was appropriately diplomatic. Perhaps the real wonder should be reserved for Seattle, 1000 miles to the north, which made the civic transition to dog parks with relative ease and polish. Concerned about where the policy would lead, dog owners formed Citizens for Off-Leash Areas (COLA) and caught the attention ...

For you, the dog owner, because people are usually startled (and very unhappy) to find an Animal Control Officer at their door; for the complainant, because they probably lost sleep last night; and for us, because we’re trying to deal with people with seriously frayed tempers.http://www.santarosa.fl.gov/animals/documents/barking.pdf. We usually don’t take the dog and we can’t magically offer a single solution to make the problem go away. A citation could be filed against the owner, but that requires two steps, and the dog owner has ample warning that it will occur. If a dog owner is willing to work with the problem (and the neighbors), citation is usually not necessary. We know that most people want to be good neighbors, and many time a dog owner is unaware that his or her dog is barking. What if my dog isn’t barking? If another dog in the area is responsible, help the Officer locate the correct dog. Why does my dog bark? If the only attention a dog receives is the punishment it receives for barking, the behavior continues. Chew toys and plenty of attention and exercise are the best ways to keep your dog from barking. The neighbors’ dogs run loose and cause my dog to bark. But I want my dog to be a watch dog. A dog that barks at every person walking by or at neighbors, is useless as a watch dog. A dog barking at 2 pm is just as annoying to a daysleeper as a dog barking at 2 am is to you. Should I get my dog a second dog to keep him company?

Whilst acknowledging human health is a priority including the prevention of zoonotic diseases notably rabies, the OIE recognises the importance of controlling dog population without causing unnecessary or avoidable animal suffering.http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/ncie/oie/pdf_files/tahc-guide-dog-pop-cont-76-mar07.pdf. Veterinary Services should play a lead role in preventing zoonotic diseases and ensuring animal welfare and should be involved in dog population control. The promotion of responsible dog ownership can significantly reduce the numbers of stray dogs and the incidence of zoonotic diseases Because dog ecology is linked with human activities, management of dog populations has to be accompanied by changes in human behaviour to be effective. Other Government Agencies The responsibilities of other government agencies will depend on the disease and the objective/nature of the dog population control measures employed. Control of stray dogs in regards to other human health risks (eg stray dogs on roads; dog attacks within communities) may fall within the responsibility of the Public Health Agency but is more likely to be the responsibility of police or other agencies for public safety/security operating at State/Provincial or municipal level. Environment Protection Agencies (normally within National or State/Provincial Ministry for the Environment) may take responsibility for the controlling problems associated with stray dogs when they present a hazard to the environment (eg control of feral dogs in national parks; prevention of dog attacks on wildlife) or where a lack of environmental controls is giving rise to stray dog populations that threaten human health or access to amenities. The ferret reintroduction area modification is proposed to provide a more logical boundary based on topographical and biological barriers for prairie dog colonies and to include lands recently acquired through land exchange.http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/mbr/projects/forestplans/in_progress/scoping prairie dog plan amendment_2007_03.pdf. Prairie dog shooting is regulated primarily by state wildlife agencies. Landownership adjustment allows for land trades to result in most prairie dog towns existing on a willing owner’s property. Third party solutions involve other government agencies or private organizations that provide innovative solutions to site-specific prairie dog management issues. Other non-lethal tools that may be effective and used in a limited number of situations are live-trapping and prairie dog barriers, both visual and physical. Other issues related to black-tailed prairie dog or black-footed ferret conservation and management in the project area are outside the scope of this proposed action. Any net loss of suitable black-footed ferret habitat as a result of prairie dog poisoning or development of new facilities within colonies shall be replaced within the year. This is based on the amount of suitable habitat available prior to prairie dog dispersal in the year of the poisoning or development. Consult state-wide prairie dog conservation strategies for additional guidance on the appropriate response to complaints of unwanted prairie dog colonization on adjoining agricultural lands (private, state, and tribal lands). To reduce risk to other wildlife, do not use burrow fumigants in prairie dog colonies. Following is a history of prairie dog management on the Thunder Basin National Grassland: 1960s-early 1970s-prairie dog ...

Temperament of the dog.http://www.bestfriends.org/theanimals/pdfs/allpets/findinglostdog.pdf. How a dog be-haves toward strangers influences how far he will travel (when lost) before someone intervenes and rescues him. Due to their cowering, fearful behavior, people assume these dogs were abused, and even if the dog has ID tags, they will refuse to contact the dog’s people. A dog who escapes in a residential area will not travel as far as a dog who escapes in a mountainous area. Fences that create barriers will influence a dog’s travel, since a dog will tend to take the path of least resistance when traveling. In addition, people are more likely to attempt to rescue a purebred dog, whom they perceive to have value, rather than a mixed-breed dog. When average motorists see a mixed-breed dog trotting down the sidewalk, their impression is often that the dog be-longs in the neighborhood or that she is a homeless stray. A dog who escapes in Manhattan will travel a shorter distance than a dog who escapes in the Rocky Mountains or in rural farmland. A dog who escapes in the middle of the night will travel farther before being seen than a dog who escapes during rush-hour traffic. By the time they start actively looking, those vital first few hours, during which they might have located the dog (or witnesses who saw the dog), are gone. They might assume, for instance, that their dog was stolen and sold for re-search when, in fact, their dog may have been rescued and put up for adoption through a local adoption event. • 435-644-2001 • www.bestfriends.org alone, often discouraged by others who rebuke them and tell them “It was just a dog” and “You’ll never find your dog.” They assume that the cowering, ...

How-to Guidance This tool is a dog biscuit with an attached tag that explains the connection between pet waste and water quality.http://www.des.state.nh.us/coastal/documents/howtodogbonegiveaways.pdf. It’s a great tool to start a conversation with dog owners at fairs and other public events. It’s also a great give-away. Dog owners take home the message and a treat for their dog. Use the instructions below to create your own message tag or use the following pages to make generic ones. Materials • Purchase dog biscuits large enough to tie a ribbon on. • Create an educational tag using your project’s logo (or other doggie graphic) and text used in Dover’s example. To save money, 6-8 tags can be grouped on a single page and then cut apart with scissors or paper cutter. Tags should be approximately 2.75” x 4.5”. • Cut a length of ribbon or string about 12” long, and thread through the hole in the tag. Tie the ribbon in a bow onto the dog biscuit. Dog bone give-aways are a fun, effective and relatively inexpensive way to get the message out to dog owners on the importance of picking up their pets’ waste. A day’s waste from 1 large dog can contain 7.8 billion fecal coliform bacteria.
