The new student- run Campus Easy Sales, an eBay consignment store, replaces Mane Location on the Gregg storefronts. Campus Easy Sales, founded by seniors Phil Katz, Wyeth Killip and Lee Garber, will help students turn spare items into cash by listing them on eBay. Katz explained that he and his co-founders patterned the business after a number of other eBay consignment stores that have had recent success. In the case of eBay consignment stores, the business helps sellers list items on eBay and handles the details of the transaction. eBay has introduced a "Trading Assistant" designation for seller accounts at consignment stores and other intermedi-ary services. eBay requires a 97 percent positive feedback rating for sellers applying for this designation, among other June newsletterOnline auction site eBay is not something typically associated with history or preservation. However, as historian Molly McCarthy notes in her article "Consuming History?" (see bibliography), more and more historians, curators, librarians, scholars, and students are turning to eBay as a legitimate historical resource. eBay has become a superb site to search for historic material culture items. McCarthy highlighted several historians who routinely turn to eBay, not necessarily to shop, but to research. One such scholar, Gretchen Adams, used eBay to "map the commodification of the Salem [witch] trials." Another scholar, who posted a web message after the article's publication, "discovered an enormous amount of material [on eBay] which has been produced over the years to celebrate [Dolley Madison] and to use her as an advertising icon." Ebay certainly has faults that merit discussion and action, such as questions of authenticity and whether the privatizationrdc-040811Nothing draws people like free food. The next best thing is good food at a discount, or at least that's what the people at Restaurant.com are hoping. The hope is fast becoming reality. In 2003, the company's revenue leapt to $4.7 million from $2.9 million in 2002, and the growth is continuing. The Arlington Heights-based company sells restaurant gift certificates at a discount. The restaurants, more than 4,000 now, are in 49 states. Another option is to bid for a gift certificate on eBay.com and possibly pay even less. "I bought Restaurant.com gift certificates from eBay, printed them out from my computer, and then went out to dinner," Karmally said. On the customer side, the company has a partnership with eBay Inc., where it enjoys a positive feedback rating of 98.6 percent.eBay has announced that it's opening up its web services API for its online auction selling and buying platform. Borland and eBay have announced an expansion of their relationship to enable Java developers to tap into the power of the web services-enabled eBay and PayPal technology platforms. Previously, eBay had been offering the API in a pilot program to a select group of application authors. Buyers must still head to ebay.com to bid on items, however, since the API doesn't allow developers to integrate that part of the auction process into their own applications. "The pilot we ran at the end of last year with some of our top affiliates boosted their eBay productivity about 30 percent by using the API. Although the Affiliate Tier is open to all developers, eBay will set some thresholds that the newcomers must meet. The thresholds, which eBay executives refused to divulge in detail, will be based on the number of new users that the developer's wares bring to the site or the Since eBay launched its pioneer person-to-person auction site in September 1995, online auctions actually have become an important type of web-based business and seem to be becoming more popular. Although the revenues of person-to-person auctions from eBay-like auction sites accounted for 70% of the 1.4 billion in goods sold online in 1997, Forrester Research predicts that the segment of business-to-person will make up 66% of the 19 billion Net market in 2003. The major auction sites such as eBay, Amazon, and yahoo all use this format. Revenue structure: In the person-to-person segment, leading online auction sites such as eBay achieve its profit targets by charging sellers both for listing fees and a percentage fee on successful transactions [7]. In order to portray the various dimensions of the online auction market we have selected eBay, Priceline and FreeMarkets as examples of the different approaches to auctions. At the time of writing this paper, based upon its own Gigaphone - Vol 5 No2Caveat Emptor We'll focus on eBay, since it's by far the largest online auction site, but the same advice is applicable to most online auctions. EBay's feedback system doesn't prevent retaliation, so some people are reluctant to label their feedback as "negative" or "neutral." EBay may show somebody beating your bid by only a dollar, but it is probably a proxy bid that's far more. EBay encourages you to place a "proxy bid," for the highest amount you're willing to pay. We recommend that you not bid on the item at all, or bid a token amount (so you can look over your list of pending bids and get a daily status update from eBay) until the last few minutes of the auction. Almost nothing on eBay is unique. If you like libraries, flea markets, resale shops, dollar stores, garage sales, or auctions, or you have a hobby or interest of any kind that's not well served by your local community, you'll probably find something on eBay. To date, seven major cases have been solved and 107 people have been arrested for Internet fraud committed using real or "spoofed" eBay sites that resemble the company's actual website. "The success of these investigations is a direct result of the excellent partnership that exists between eBay, the DGCCOA, and the Secret Service," said Robert Gombar, Special Agent in Charge of Secret Service's Rome Field Office, which oversees the agency's Bucharest Resident Office. "On behalf of the Secret Service, I would like to commend the DGCCOA and eBay for their hard work and collaboration in bringing these investigations to a successful conclusion." The long-term goal would be to design a fully functional decentralized system which resembles eBay without eBay's dedicated, centralized infrastructure. As the first step in this direction we present an approach for a completely decentralized P2P public key infrastructure (PKI) which can serve as the basis for higher-level security service. We base it on a statistical approach and present an analytical model to quantify its behavior and properties and to provide probabilistic guarantees. To justify our claims we provide a first-order analysis and discuss the PKI's resilience against various known threats and attack scenarios. The eBay ethos is to describe a product honestly, then stand back and let the buyers decide if they want it, and how badly. While consumers may need additional information, or even education, the notion of `false consciousness,' that consumers may be deluded about what they want, simply doesn't obtain on eBay. Of all the checks and balances in place to ensure that buyers and sellers meet each other's expectations, none is more powerful than the rating system 1. In a market economy, decisions about what and how much to produce are based on the interaction between pro-ducers and consumers. The laws of supply and demand affect what is pro-duced, sold or traded, and at what cost. "The eBay Way of Life" (pages 50- 60) describes the online auc-tion site as a perfect meeting of supply and demand. Then see if eBay fits the description. But that's exactly what eBay's chief financial officer Rajiv Dutta is doing when he asserts, "I see our role as managing evolution." The surge of internet auction sites such as eBay has made it possible for individual consumers to buy and sell online very conveniently. The "buy-it-now" option is very popular on eBay and frequently used by professional online retailers who list their items using eBay. Section 2 presents some in stitutional background about eBay and explains the auction design.
