This paper shows empirically that eBay's feedback system doc-uments successful transactions, but often fails to inform users of unsuccessful ones. A data set containing information from 3776 auctions I collected from eBay's platform, gives reason to assume that the feedback system exhibits a positive bias due to the na-ture of mutual feedback that is made public instantly. Electronic markets such as eBay o ﬀer the advantage of rapidly conveying reputation to other market participants by publicizing feedback. Ebay de ﬁnes a successful transaction as an auction that receives at least the minimum bid, or as one in which the secret reserve price has been reached. Ebay assumes that the minimum feedback score deters sellers from engaging in such scams because the collection of such an amount of feedback is costly.
