A study by Dr. Michael Song and co-authors Cornelia Droge, Sangphet Hanvanich, Roger Calantone in the forthcoming Strategic Management Journal, 2005, shows that firms with strengths in both marketing and technology perform especially well in environments with high technological turbulence. Results from structural equation modeling (SEM) showed that both strong marketing capabilities and strong technology capabilities were positively related to performance. A number of consumer-related auction sites have sprung up on the World Wide Web over the last few years, and best known among these is eBay. Ward and Clark observe that eBay allows both mini-mum-increment bidding, i.e., submitting a bid in the amount of the current high bid plus a minimum incre-ment set by eBay policy, and proxy bidding, i.e., sub-mitting a bid for an amount more PROMOTIONSPROMOTIONS (No Longer Offered) Sprint/eBay Points Promotion Residential customers who are registered eBay users may receive eBay Anything Points (points). E-auctioneer eBay has struck a partnership that will involve the catalog industry. eBay will work with Altura International, a Monterey, California-based firm that provides e-commerce solutions to catalog companies. Catalog companies will auction over-stocked or discounted merchandise on eBay. Linking with Altura, eBay now becomes part of the $120-billion-a-year cata-log sales business in which about 17,000 companies sell direct-ly to consumers through printed catalogs. The eBay partnership calls for Altura to funnel mer-chandise from its catalog partners to the auction site in connec-tion with its existing online brand, CatalogCity.com. Winning bidders for catalog merchandise on eBay will complete their purchases on the CatalogCity.com site. The eBay deal mirrors some Amazon pacts in which the e-tailer shares its audience of shoppers APHA 153First of all, eBay is not an auction house. All eBay does (and here's the clever part) is provide a central server and software on the Internet where registered users can put up items they own for auction, and where other registered users may bid on them. Once the auction is over, eBay sends an email to the buyer and seller and lets them finalize the sale and shipping. If you are interested, there are plenty of experienced users around you to give you tips, and eBay itself provides self-guided tutorials. So the next question is, is it worth your time to search eBay for printing equipment and old printed items? But if you are looking for artifacts to show students or add to your collection, eBay can't be ignored. I first tried eBay in April when trying to find items for Terry Belanger and Rare Book School. eBay was the best option available at the time (see the last Newsletter for recent alternatives). The long-term goal would be to design a fully functional decentralised system which resembles eBay without eBay's dedicated, centralised infrastructure. As the first step in this direction we present an approach for a completely decentralised P2P public key infrastructure (PKI) which can serve as the basis for higher-level security service. We base it on a statistical approach and present an analytical model to quantify its behaviour and properties and to provide probabilistic guarantees. To justify our claims we provide a first-order analysis and discuss the PKI's resilience against various known threats and attack scenarios. The residents of these areas became subjects of the new ruling powers, and all of their vital life events from that period were recorded by those powers. Along with the rebirth of Poland as a nation came physical possession of many of the vital records that were created during the 123 years under foreign occupation. These records, available in Warsaw, are a little known alternative to writing for genealogical information to archives in the Ukraine, Lithuania, or Belarus. With respect to eBay, I have found it to be a wonderful source of items that assist me in my Polish research. William A. But are sellers moving business to eBay or simply finding other outlets? I asked bookseller Chris Hendricks about opening an eBay store or auction to sell books. He describes the amount of money (almost $1500) he would have to spend upfront on store fees and listing fees and even then, he notes "your title does not show up at the top of the search."
