Scammers are `Phishing' Don't

Phishing is a high-tech scam that uses spam to deceive people into disclosing their credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security numbers, passwords, and other sensitive personal information. Email and Internet users are reporting a significant escalation in the number and sophistication of these scams. These deceptive messages, most often sent via email (but also via instant messenger, and cell phones), fake (spoof) the appearance of popular auction, financial, merchant, and other company Web sites in an attempt to commit identity theft. These spoofed messages/sites are very convincing and often look exactly like the legitimate sites. Currently, the most prolific appear to be sent from companies such as US Bank, eBay, Citi, Amazon, and PayPal. There are many other accounts/companies targeted as well. For example, if you have an account with eBay and receive a message instructing you to update your account information via a web link or email form,

case study parkersbolton

A 75-year-old business located in the North West, Parkers of Bolton has been selling bicycles for 20 years, traditionally via a retail showroom in Bolton and via wholesale. In 2001, the company became an early seller on eBay UK, experimenting with excess inventory. Demand quickly proved itself on eBay; however, the manual effort required to launch items with eBay's tools stifled the business' growth. Parkers of Bolton selected Marketworks because of its ability to automate across the eBay selling process. Today, we are only limited by eBay demand and the additional traffic we can drive." Marketworks' storefront and Creative Services: Resulted in a well-designed, strongly branded website for off-eBay growth. With the support of Marketworks, Parkers of Bolton became eBay UK's first PowerSeller and continues to be the #1 bike seller. With the assistance of Marketworks, this business has become UK's first eBay PowerSeller and eBay's #1 bike seller in the UK. Had outgrown Turbo

eBay is the best known and most successful online auction service. Resnick and Zeckhauser (see (Resnick & Zeckhauser 2001)) advance hypotheses to explain eBay's peculiar feedback rates and positive customer reputations: eBay users may feel a sense of belonging to a community that they are willing to spend effort to maintain. In addition, eBay customers have disincentives to provide negative feedback. This means that if dissatisfied cus-tomers are less likely to give feedback, then eBay reputations are biased. In this paper we focus on whether the differences in "maturity" (by which we refer to the number of positive feedback received by an eBay customer) between buyers and sellers determines "balances of power" condition for feedback information, skewing feedback in favor of sellers and larger players, and determining self-reinforcing biased dynamics. An analysis of the literature on eBay's reputation system suggests the following factors as motivation for participants'

Under the deal, a company spokesman said, Lycos Korea will be responsible for eBay's marketing activities in Korea to help eBay find a new market there. eBay plans to offer $3 to Lycos Korea for every new eBay Korean member applying for eBay member-ship through Lycos Korea, he said. "With the Internet crossing borders and facilitating the establishment of a global market this Lycos Korea-eBay marketing alliance will pave the way to develop ourselves into a global portal" said a top Korean Lycos official. June 18, 2000 - The seemingly fruitful South-North summit is generating a festive mood across all sectors, except for the faltering economy, which has shown no sign of improvement in past weeks. Worries still cloud the minds of corporate managers and government officials as the econo-my is worsening despite the high dose of good news coming from the talks. The stock market is faltering, disappointing investors who expected a positive turnaround after the summit concluded

Don't be fooled by the act of someone sending an e-mail to you falsely claiming to be an established, legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam you into surrendering your private information that will be used for identity theft. These e-mails direct users to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal information such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers. The Web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user's information. In 2003, for example, users received e-mails supposedly from eBay claiming that the user's account was about to be suspended unless he clicked on the link provided and updated the credit card information that the genuine eBay already had. Because it is relatively simple to make a Web site look like a legitimate organization's site by mimicking the HTML code, the scam counted on people being tricked into thinking they were actually being contacted by eBay and were subsequently going to eBay's

We investigate cross-border price differentials using data from the online auction site eBay. In the next section we review causes for price differ-entials and explain our choice for data from eBay. Our data set is based on transactions at the online auction site eBay.com. According to its annual report, 95 million users from more than 150 countries listed 971 million items on eBay in 2003. In other words, it seems reasonable to assume that our eBay `price levels' provide a reasonable approximation of how much online consumers pay on av-erage in different European countries. English auctions are the predominant form of transaction at eBay, but we also have a considerable number of sales at fixed price in our sample. In order to capture potential differences in using eBay options, we include as much of the characteristics explained in section 3 as explanatory variables. This is followed by variables related to the use of eBay options: We have seen in section 3 that

Librarians at the OSU Library can guide interested patrons to print and online resources that may assist in establishing values but they will not provide appraisals for you. Those seeking the names of appraisers to assist in determining values for tax purposes may wish to contact the Library's Special Collections & University Archives Department. Additionally, the Internal Revenue Service provides definitions of what constitutes a qualified appraiser for tax purposes and how to determine fair market value (see IRS Publication 561 "Determining the Value of Donated Property" at www.irs.ustreas.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p561) There are no clear-cut criteria for what constitutes a valuable book or journal and value is a constantly changing concept.   Users of the eBay site must register and agree to the eBay User Agreement. It is important to include information regarding eBay auctions on the BE site because eBay is by far the biggest consumer to consumer on-line auction site. In late August or early September 1999, eBay requested by telephone that BE cease posting eBay auction listings on its site. Even if eBay were able to establish a likelihood of success on the merits as to these causes of action, such a showing would only support injunctive relief addressing BE's use of the eBay mark and BE's use of the eBay auction listings (the appropriate relief for which would appear to be a disclaimer regarding the Such a showing would not be sufficient to enjoin BE from accessing eBay's computer systems, which is the only relief eBay appears to request. Page 4 As noted above, eBay does not seek an injunction that is tailored to independently address the manner in which BE uses the information it obtains from eBay. Accordingly,

A recent pickup in the IPO market may leave liquidity-seeking venture capitalists wondering if their portfolio companies are ready for the public markets. New issuers can expect compliance to be cumbersome, time-consuming, and expensive, but working closely with outside advisors will help to ensure that compliant controls and procedures are in place before going public.
