eBay is UK's top e-commerce site in March 2003

First UK site to generate over a billion page views per month Online marketplace eBay has overtaken Amazon as the number one e-commerce site in the UK for the first time since Nielsen//NetRatings began reporting the behaviour of Briton's online population since March 2000. Figures released this week by Nielsen//NetRatings show how the website has been steadily building its audience in the last few months. Since March 2002, the site has increased its audience by 160% to 6.8 million Britons. In the same period, Amazon's audience has grown by 28% to 6.1 million people. In March 2003, visitors to eBay spent on average one hour and eleven minutes on the site. This is one of the longest amounts of time spent on any UK site, and underlines how the eBay platform works, as visitors return to the site to check the status of items they are selling or bidding for. Over a billion pages were viewed on eBay sites in the UK in March 2003, making it one of the few websites to achieve a

EBay and Craigslist have both done a remarkable job building communities of buyers and sellers. Newspapers say EBay and Craigslist have had a significant impact on their classified advertising, especially in the merchandise category - which generated more than $2 billion in sales for daily newspapers in the United States last year. One interactive-media director told us he had tried to develop services to combat EBay and Craigslist, "but we just haven't had the opportunity because of a lack of buy-in from the classified managers. Newspapers must speed their development and launch of new classified products and services to compete with challengers like EBay, Craigslist and other free-ad products - including Thrifty Nickel and pennysaver-type publications. Some newspapers weren't sure what to make of EBay's impact, or they had not yet pinpointed what categories were suffering. Many of the people we interviewed said the only way to effectively compete with EBay is

The world's most famous jewelry com-pany filed suit June 21 in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York against eBay Inc., the world's largest online auction site. Tiffany claims eBay facilitates and participates in the counter-feiting, infringement and false advertising of the jewelry company's federally regis-tered trademarks in violation of the Lanham Act. The company had approached California-based eBay several times in the past few years in an effort to thwart poten-tial counterfeiters. But it was unhappy with eBay's response. Other luxury-goods companies, such as Kate Spade and Prada, also have been working to eradicate purveyors of counterfeit goods from eBay. "And when we were unable to work anything out with eBay on When Tiffany first asked eBay in 2002 to stem the flow of counterfeit merchan-dise, Tiffany says eBay refused. In its lawsuit, Tiffany asks the court to force eBay to account for its profits arising from counterfeit sales, and enter a

AGS is now an approved non-profit of eBay Giving Works. eBay Giving Works is a fundraising platform for nonprofits that offers buyers and sellers the opportunity to support their favorite causes (the AGS!) through trading on eBay. MissionFish is the provider of The Giving AssistantT, the listing for items posted on eBay in the eBay Giving works program. eBay Giving Works allows you to list items on eBay, and direct a portion or all of the proceeds to be donated to AGS, while providing you documentation of your donation for tax purposes, all in a very efficient, low hassle way. We think this is a creative way to extend your ability to support the AGS (check out www.ebay.com/givingworks or www.missionfish.org, as well as the AGS website at www.amergeog.org for more information). You'll need to have a valid eBay account setup to do this. If you are a casual seller on eBay (less than 10 items ever), or a first time user at eBay, once you are signed up on Missionfish,

Auction We invite you to participate in our Spring 2005 on-line & postal fundraising auction. We suggest you visit the WTT website (www.wildtrout.org) where you can view the catalogue and click the link to eBay (the link will be active when the auction goes live on eBay). The Lots will be on eBay.co.uk for ten days, from the evening of 7 March to the evening of 17 March 2005 (the exact closing time of each bid will appear next to the Lot description on eBay.co.uk). The highest bidder for each Lot at the end of the auction on 17 March wins that Lot. For this reason, it is not necessary to closely monitor or repeatedly bid on an auction on eBay.co.uk once you have made your bid. If you place a bid and are later outbid by another bidder, eBay.co.uk will notify you by email, so that you may consider whether you would like to increase your bid. The WTT will also put you in contact with the donor of the Lot so that you can arrange the details etc. eBay.co.uk does not

Many bidders in eBay employ bidding strategies that involve late bids, incremental bids, or both. We focus here on how a small difference in the rules employed in auctions run by eBay and Amazon, both of which supply bidders with simple software agents, elicit different behavior from bidders, and different use of software agents. Then, the proxy bidding agent provided by eBay would make incremental or multiple bidding unnecessary. Suppose for instance that your maximum willingness to pay for an antique coin auctioned on eBay were $100. The underlying idea is, of course, that eBay's bidding agent will bid up to the maximum bid only when some other bidder has bid as high or higher. For instance, 40 percent of eBay-Computers auctions and 59 percent of eBay-Antiques auctions in our sample have last bids in the last 5 minutes, as compared to about 3 percent of both Amazon-Computers and Amazon-Antiques auctions that have last bids in the last five minutes

I must say that after listen - ing to Donnaʼs talk in June I began to enjoy my experience using eBay a lot more. I start-ed to work at eBay, indirectly, as part of my daily routine. Furthermore, I have recruited others to join in my success on eBay. I mentioned to a few of my friends and relatives that I attended Donnaʼs classes (yes, I have been to more than one) and they began to actually ask me to sell things for them on eBay. I still classify myself as an eBay novice (Iʼve only been buying and selling for a few months now). The chances of being "burned" in an eBay transaction still exist but Iʼve learned precautions to take to make the eBay experience a successful one. Donna shows our members how to use eBay wisely by explaining how to "have fun and trade safely" on eBay. I find that tracking an existing item on eBay to see itʼs success rate and the sellerʼs initial asking price is always a plus. Donnaʼs web site ( http:// www.ebaylady.com) contains a wealth of
