eBay Drop-Off Stores News for February 23, 2005

QuikDrop has authorized Robert Golub to open 20 franchise drop-off stores in Eastern Massachusetts. Auction Inn is working with Manheim Auto Auction to develop an automotive condition section within their Work-Able job skills training program. Auction Inn provides embedded job-training, and works closely with the Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster to provide job-training opportunities to their members. http://www.auctioninn.com The State of Tennessee passed a law allowing schools to sell surplus items at online auctions rather than at lower interest public auctions. Since the law passed, Athens City Schools have found success using local consignment company, NuMarkets. Dr. Rigell, Director of Education for Athens City Schools, stated, "Internet auctions create a much larger number of potential buyers. The money earnedreturned to our school system to help fund the education of our children." He cites NuMarkets as being instrumental in their success. Their website, previously

To Snipe or Not To Snipe: Are Bidding Strategies on eBay Irrational?

A cynic knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. ---Oscar Wilde Analysis of online auction data has yielded a wealth of information and a few puzzles. Most puzzling is the wide use of sniping. In 2000, a study of eBay auctions found that 37 percent of auctions had a bid in the last minute and 12 percent in the last 10 seconds. In April 2002, Ozmioz Games analyzed a recent set of eBay auctions and found that these numbers have not changed. Sniping is even more interesting, since eBay offers an automated bidding agent that is intended to eliminate the incentive to snipe. While eBay auctions show last minute bidding 37 percent of the time, on Amazon less than 1 percent of auctions show this sort of behavior. For example it might be unwise to sell on Yahoo without a reservation price, but a reservation price is not needed on eBay.

Use this information to better understand eBay Buyer behavior and refine your listing and merchandising strategies. - Visitors spend more time on eBay than on other sites. What do visitors do when they get to eBay? This "branching tree" diagram illustrates the most popular paths visitors take through eBay. Well-written listings that use eBay selling features stand out and encourage visitors to stop looping and start buying. eBay reaches a wide variety of people, whose demographics largely mirror those of the typical American Internet user. Why do they shop on eBay? categories) tend to be women and more experiential in their approach to eBay, deriving both practical and emotional benefits from their usage.

What Makes eBay Invincible

EBay has been one of the best performing companies in the dot.com sector. EBay enjoys a market capitalization of $24 billion, and its shares recently reached a new 52-week high. It also talks about two priorities that dominate eBay's operational strategy. The obvious answer to the eBay success story conundrum is that eBay's first-mover advantage allowed it to dominate the online auction space. When eBay started there were a half-dozen companies offering something similar on the Internet. However EBay was the first at their particular business: conducting auctions with no inventory. EBay has also capitalized on the network effect to a greater extent than any other e-commerce company. In a nutshell, eBay's critical mass of customers creates an ever-expanding sphere of influence resembling a magnetic field. The author next talks about the two priorities that dominate eBay's operational strategy: Keeping its buyer/seller community happy From the start, eBay has been, first and

Sellers in eBay auctions have the opportunity to choose both a public minimum bid amount and a secret reserve price. In a field experiment, we auction 50 matched pairs of Pokémon cards on eBay, half with secret reserves and half with equivalently high public minimum bids. Online-auction services such as eBay allow sellers to specify a number of different parameters when listing an item for auction. In particular, the question of secret reserve prices is quite difficult to study with data on eBay auctions run by other sellers, for several reasons. Section three provides details of our experimental design, including the relevant eBay institutional details. EBay similarly allows sellers to keep reserve-price amounts secret, but they do inform bidders whether or not a reserve price is in effect. Though eBay's computer accepts no bids at amounts less than the public minimum bid, it does accept bids less than the unknown secret reserve. Using a secret reserve price in an

One of their solutions was to do some-thing very un-fundraising looking: auc-tion off items on eBay, the popular Internet auction website. eBay boasts 55 million avid users, or people who log on several times a week. Posting the same items on eBay cur-rently involves a learning curve but has fewer details to work out. The benefit of using eBay, in addition to the volume of people it reach-es, is that it is not limited to people looking to help a charity. Using eBay also allows PHC to offer items that might not be attractive to the local population. Despite the y image of fundraising on eBay, this effort will be a minimal part of fundrais-ing for the organization, said McAleer. PHC may be one of the first nonprofits in the area to use eBay as a tool, but the website is no stranger to organizations around the country. Hundreds of charities are listed on eBay as well as instructions on how organizations can join in the future. People's Health Clinic is not currently listed

EBAY v. BIDDER'S EDGE

Users of the eBay site must register and agree to the eBay User Agreement. It is important to include information regarding eBay auctions on the BE site because eBay is by far the biggest consumer to consumer on-line auction site. In late August or early September 1999, eBay requested by telephone that BE cease posting eBay auction listings on its site. Such a showing would not be sufficient to enjoin BE from accessing eBay's computer systems, which is the only relief eBay appears to request. As noted above, eBay does not seek an injunction that is tailored to independently address the manner in which BE uses the information it obtains from eBay.8 Even without accessing eBay's computer systems by robot, BE could inflict reputational harm by misrepresenting the contents of eBay's auction database or by misusing eBay's trademark. However, eBay does not indicate that these expenses are incrementally incurred because of BE's activities, nor that any particular service disruption

March 24, 2005 -- eBay, the famous online auction site, has struck a blow against plutocracy by barring Billionaires For Bush (B4B), advocates for the corporate elite, from auctioning off Social Security to Wall Street. To the shock and dismay of the Billionaires, eBay was unwilling to make an exception to its long-standing practice of requiring auctioneers to actually own the items they wish to sell. "This is an outrage!" insisted Monet Oliver de Place, National Co-Chair. "Our understanding with President Bush was that we'd be able to loot trillions of dollars from the taxpayers. What better way to start the process than auctioning off the retirement of non-Billionaire Americans? The fact that the money belongs to them, not us, is merely a technicality." In clear violation of the auction's spirit of corporate cronyism, everyday American citizens, including Pennsylvania Rep. Marc B. Cohen, registered , and openly bid on the item, claiming to represent the best interests of

As rural Alaska catches up in the Electronic Age, villagers are becoming affiliated with online auction sites like eBay. He was in this dusty village along the Koyukuk River in May, giving a two-day workshop about online auctions like eBay to would-be entrepreneurs. Sell that reputation on a place like eBay, the world's largest online auction site with 95 million registered users, and villages across Alaska could have a firewall against financial slumps. He used his laser pointer - which doubles as a remote mouse - like he was a gunslinger, aiming it at the eBay image projected against the wall complete with his own space-age sound effects: "Bzzz!   In this paper, I present new identification results and proposes an estimation method for an eBay auction model with an application. A key difficulty with data from eBay auctions is the fact that the number of potential bidders willing to pay the reserve price is not observable and the number of potential bidders var-ies auction by auction. All of these imply that eBay is no longer an amateurs' casual market or a nationwide garage sale; it has become an alternative market through which many sellers make their living. Monopoly issues may be raised because eBay seems to be the dominant auction site, even though it imposes relatively high posting fees. The abov e theorem shows that potential bidders' value distribution is identified from the data available in eBay auctions. A poten tial bidder monitors an auction at a randomly generated time to make a bid according to eBay rules. Moreover, a bene fit of using eBay auction data is that many observations are available. Furthermore,
