We need a Nobel Prize in business, awarded to organizations
that demonstrate how business effectiveness (meaning survival, market
share, profits, and stock value) results directly from ethical behavior.
A society that is not built on ethics -- on fairness, freedom, and mature
hearts and minds -- cannot survive for long.
One must look at the moral and ethical stance of an organization and the
role of leadership in creating a culture of values.
But in business, there is also a "dog eat dog" mentality.
Somehow, when it comes to business, there is such an emphasis on success,
that morals and ethics sometimes take a back seat.
Randi Rønning Balsvik, Professor in history, The University
of Tromsø As I have not been asked to speak on a specific topic,
I have chosen to share with the audience some preliminary thoughts on
1) Ethical dilemmas connected to North-South university collaboration
and 2) The position of women in African universities.
The main message I want to forward in this audience is that in order to
enhance the position of women in African universities, there is an urgent
need for stipends and greater security for female students in the form
of good hostel conditions, security of movement to the library at night
and possibilities of good housing and kindergartens for student mothers
with their children.

The principles of medical ethics that apply to younger patients
also apply to those patients in older age groups.
Psychiatric consultants at nursing homes are more frequently asked by
nursing staff to evaluate patients, only to find that the patients' insurance
will not cover psychiatric care.
At this stage, psychiatrists are left with the ethical dilemma of either
providing care for which they will not be reimbursed but for which they
are liable, or letting the patient's psychiatric problem go untreated.
With older psychiatric patients, there is often the ethical dilemma of
the need to share important medical and psychiatric information with third
parties (other physicians, family members, caregivers, and insurance companies).
These could include factors such as depression, sleep deprivation, metabolic
imbalance, and medication side effects.

Description and rational: The ethical dimensions of economics
have always been at the heart of the ongoing debates shaping the discipline,
the economic choices we make, and the societies in which we live.
This will be accomplished with readings from the textbook and numerous
case-studies (historical and contemporary) that will allow students to
immediately apply the theory to actual moral dilemmas in the realm of
economics.

for you and for your capacity to work at a level of excellence you may
not have thought possible, I will follow the grading standards outlined
in the college catalog (partially reproduced here): Grade A is reserved
for work that is exceptional in quality and shows keen insight, understanding,
and initiative.
In a teaching institution such as Rollins College, professors are professional
intellectuals who derive satisfaction not only from expanding their own
horizons but also from expanding those of our students.

Understanding the clinical dilemmas that shape medical students'
ethical development: questionnaire survey and focus group study Lisa K
Hicks, Yulia Lin, David W Robertson, Deborah L Robinson, Sarah I Woodrow
During the past 30 years new medical technologies and public concern about
medical ethics have led medical schools in Europe and North America to
increase their teaching of formal ethics considerably.
Our content analysis of the focus groups revealed three cat" egories
of ethically problematic situations: conflict between the priorities of
medical education and those of patient care, responsibility beyond a student's
capacities, and involvement in patient care perceived to be substandard
(table).
Finally, in the focus groups, students reflected that the ethical problems
they encountered were seldom discussed or resolved with clinical teachers.

Most of this approach is common to all of science.
But there is one significant difference: since our object is the understanding
of life processes the experimental tests of theories and hypotheses must
be done on living matter, from cells to whole organisms, even on humans.
This raises ethical issues --- and presents us with ethical dilemmas ---because
such experiments must, in part, be performed on living animals or on humans.
Some of us have resolved the dilemma by limiting their experiments to
small subunits such as ion channels, units that cannot "suffer".
But actually the study of channel function depends on obtaining material
from cells and organisms, partic ularly if one resorts to genomic manipulation
of channel properties.
