http://www.allina.com/ahs/hm001.pdf The Bio-Ethics Consultation Committee shall be a multi-disciplinary
group of health professionals established to address ethical dilemmas
which occur in the course of patient care at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
The Bio-Ethics Committee shall provide a forum and a process to assist
patients and their families, physicians, and health care team members
when they are confronted with ethical dilemmas.
When there is confusion, conflict, or uncertainty regarding an ethical
issue between the attending physician, and the patient, family member/surrogate,
consulting physician, or member of the treatment team, individuals involved
should first attempt to resolve the matter in communication with one another.
STC48-000147
Many of the ideologies and standard practices that have long
been used to teach and guide technical communicators are not entirely
effective.
When responsibilities collide it is often difficult to know what the best
ethical choice is, given that most communicators learn about ethics in
a controlled context or environment, such as academia.
For a more realistic preparation, educators should acknowledge the limitations
placed on ethics, such as politics, conflicting interests, and time constraints.
An example scenario of ethics compromised by office politics follows:
At a previous position in a large corporation, writers were routinely
asked to produce documentation before the product was finished.

I see it as a way for the worker to get closure and pay respects to the
family, especially if they've been involved with the client for a long
time during a period of illness.

ETHICS: Deciding what is right (or what is more right) in a
particular situation: determining what ought to be; deciding what is consistent
with one's personal or organizational value system.
If the ethical leader has a clear understanding of his/her own personal
ethics, and has a sense of the organization's ethics, then ethical behavior
is that which is consistent with these codes.
1. Behave in ways that are consistent with your purpose.
A clear personal purpose is the foundation for ethical behavior.
Self-esteem is a powerful tool for behaving ethically.
3. Behave with patience and with faith in your decision and yourself.

Sportsmen have used anabolic steroids since the 1950s and yet
it was not until the 1980s that we, as physicians, admitted that they
could improve performance.
For the majority, the improvement through the use of performance-enhancing
drugs can equally be achieved through dietary and training advice.

Professional social work education is preparation for practice.
The educational intent is to produce effective social workers whose practice
reflects the knowledge, skills and values which define the profession.
This requires of a professional social worker an ability to integrate
the knowledge and skills of the profession into sound judgments and decisions,
and to be able to carry out these decisions in an ethical and effective
manner.
The content and procedures in this seminar are focused around these integrative
processes.
The seminar affords students an opportunity to integrate their social
work courses, as well as the practicum experience, around the core concepts
of professional ethics.

The birth of conjoined or "Siamese" twins is a rare
event -- one in 50,000 to 100,000 births -- but it can produce a number
of ethical challenges for parents and health care providers.
In England last year, the British High Court's decision to separate the
conjoined twins known as Mary and Jodie sparked controversy around the
world amongst doctors, ethicists and the public at large.
This presented a unique ethical dilemma: attempting to surgically separate
the twins would lead to Mary's death, while leaving them conjoined would
kill Jodie, a newborn with the potential to live a healthy and productive
life.

Fundamental Q in recreational sports: play to win or let everyone
participate?
How does a sports manager recognize an ethical dilemma?
Morals are fundamental baseline values dictating social behavior
In sports, moral principle: do your best; in biz, honesty and fair dealing.
Law and morality are NOT the same.
Corporate and athletic codes of conduct are guidelines for behavior.
Create situation where the Q is whether something is in compliance, not
if it's morally just, the rules are at fault.

Institutional ethics committees have become commonplace in
the past decade.
In addition to ethics committees, some institutions offer ethics consultation
services.
The exact percentage of institutions that offer ethics consultation is
unclear at this time, but it is a growing practice.
The 1992 Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
(JCAHO) manual requires that health care organizations "have in place
a mechanism for the consideration of ethical issues arising in the care
of patients, and to provide education to caregivers and patients on ethical
issues in health care."2 Some institutions even have multiple, specialized
committees.
For example, a treatment team may feel that resuscitation is futile for
a particular patient but the family insists upon continued efforts.

This paper first takes a brief look at ten topical areas were
ethics apply to computers and the Internet, and then suggests a general
ethic for those working with technology that can and will impact society.
Computers and the Internet represent many people, governments, and organizations.
Through good cooperation and a common desire to achieve a healthier computing
environment a general ethical policy can be established.
Under that paradigm any work derived from great intellectuals and companies
must also be made available to that company.
Creating a good ethical policy for social use of technology does not bread
good use of that technology, but rather good use of technology breads
good ethics.
