Explain to patients the medical importance of obesity as a risk factor for many serious diseases. 2. Develop a chronic disease management model for treating obesity based on lifestyle change and medication or surgery when necessary. 3. Through the use of other professionals and resources, provide a comprehensive long term management plan customized to each patient. Obesity is a chronic health condition of multifactorial etiology increasing in epidemic proportions. It is second only to tobacco in preventable lifestyle habits. Obesity is an independent risk factor for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. It also contributes to osteoarthritis of the knees, gallbladder disease and some cancers. With a motivated patient and a caring commitment from the family physician, success can be achieved for this difficult but important health problem. 09FamilyFamily planning remains a keystone in attaining a national goal aimed at achieving planned, wanted pregnancies and pre-venting unintended pregnancies. Family planning services provide opportunities for individuals to receive medical advice and assistance in controlling if and when they get pregnant and for health providers to offer health education and related medical care. Abortion results when women have unintended pregnancies, and adequate access to family planning services reduces the number of unintended pregnancies. Poverty is strongly related to greater difficulty in using reversi-ble contraceptive methods successfully, with these females also the least likely to have the resources necessary to access family planning services and the most likely to be affected negatively by an unintended pregnancy. Yet, half of all females who are at risk for an unintended pregnancy and need publicly subsidized family planning services are not getting them.18 ch09The crude mortality rate declined from 27.4 per 1,000 population at the time of Independence to 8.9 in 1996, and infant mortality rate has been brought down from 134 per 1,000 live births to 71 over the same period. Life expectancy has risen from a mere 32 years in 1947 to about 62 years. The country has been able to achieve zero guineaworm status as no new cases of guineaworm have been reported after 1996. Several National health programmes are being implemented as Centrally-sponsored schemes aimed mainly at reduction of mortality and morbidity caused by major diseases. Pilot projects have also been taken up in respect of cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes and rehabilitation of the medically disabled. The National Anti-Malaria Programme is the world's biggest health programme against a single communicable disease and continues to be the country's most comprehensive and multi-faceted public health activity. Resurgence of malaria necessitated renewed vigorous anti-malariapppfacts_4General: This program refers eligible Department of the Army (DA) employees whose DA sponsor is involved in a permanent change of station (PCS). Note toIntroduction Over the last three decades the American family has been undergoing a profound and far-reaching transformation. First, Americans are more optimistic than those in most countries that children and the family need not suffer if the mother is employed. The working class however is significantly more likely to disagree that children and the family both suffer if a mother works and to agree that both spouses should work. Approval of when a woman should work according to the presence and ages of children shows a similar pattern across family types (Table 25A). This is consistent with the pattern shown on several gender role 9This is the rarest of family types and in many instances there are too few cases for reliable figures to be reported. The structure of family life has changed appreciably over the last generation with large shifts in the distribution of family types. Collectively the alterations mark the replacement of traditional family types and family Mark282Some might ask, "Why would a family medicine department host a basic science program?" There is also a great need to provide clini-cal input to basic research, and this is a part of the NIH Roadmap.1 Do family medicine faculty do enough of this nationally? If we did more, would we increase the numbers of students who choose family medi-cine as a career? The topic of the relationship be-tween research and student interest in family medicine is highlighted in an article by Senf et al2 in this month's issue of Family Medicine. The authors conclude that there is an inverse relationship between re-search and student interest in fam-ily medicine and pose the question "Will efforts to expand research in family medicine further reduce stu-dent interest?" First of all, the vast majority of research that pre-medical students see is bench re-search that is not representative of what most people would consider to be family medicine research. An encounter between an other health provider (i.e. non-medical health educator) and a user in which family planning education or counseling services are provided. Because this other health provider encounter involved family planning counseling, the encounter is considered a family planning other health provider encounter. Among male family planning users, regional variations are even more striking. Over the period 1995 to 2003, the distribution of family planning users by age has remained fairly constant with only minor fluctuations from year to year. Why become a foster family? Every member of a foster family learns and grows through the experience of caring for a foster child. Foster care provides a child or siblings with a nurturing and supportive alternative home when they are not able to live with their birth family. Others may need to live with a foster family for several months or, in some circumstances, several years. Every effort is made to reunite a foster child with his or her family or find a permanent home for the child. It is the responsibility of government to provide protection services to children who are being abused or neglected by their family. " Sam wants to live with a family where he can continue to play hockey with his team." If you think your family has the special qualities and time to become a foster family or if you want more information on fostering, contact your local office of the Department of Family and Community Services. 1 | 2
