Family Communications about Money

  Many financial problems occur because family members do not understand their money situation. When family members don't "talk things over," even the most workable spending plan is doomed to failure. When the values of family members differ, there is potential conflict. What type of family life would satisfy you most? Are you prepared for the financial responsibilities of a family? Could your family get along with only one car? The more open your family is about "money talk," however, the more satisfied all will be with how family money is spent. One way to ensure family involvement in money decisions is by holding family council meetings. Family situations can influence, disrupt and change family finances.

  This Spotlight is based on Family Literacy: An Annotated Bibliography, a new 53-page book that is part of the Carolina Family Literacy Study research program. Family literacy programs are rapidly grow-ing in the United States. This annotated bibliography summarizes writings and re-search on family literacy and on topics directly relevant to family literacy programs. The chapter ends with conclusions based on the family literacy research and with suggestions for future research in family literacy. The topics addressed in the articles include the impor-tance of the family in literacy development; the Parents as Partners Reading Program; school out-reach programs; the varying use of print in families; creating cultural connections between parents and their children; project FLAME and family literacy programs for Latino families; and the use of family portfolios to evaluate family literacy programs. While your child is in the care of OCFS, Family Advocates are available to work with you to prepare for his or her return home.
