This will dramatically enhance the development process as well as cut down the time it takes to main-tain and debug Flash applications. No longer "just an animation tool," as it has been labeled in the past, the new Flash has given rise to more full-blown Web applications that utilize Flash as the front end with a powerful application server like ColdFusion as the back end. Long gone (I'm hoping) are the days of useless intros, so let's make a conscious effort to start pushing Flash MX application development to its limits! ActionScript allows the developer to harness the power of modular, object-oriented code that can control all aspects of a Flash movie. We'll take a look at a Flash application that utilizes components, gathers user input, and passes this information to be handled by CF. Let's get started. The purpose of this application is to become familiar with some new Flash MX components along with a few of their methods. Not only that, we'll see how simple it is to

Together, Macromedia and DoubleClick have developed a new method of pursuing Click-Events on FLASH banners. With the help of the Click-Tracking command line, it can be determined how often a Flash banner has been clicked, while also directing the user to a prescribed URL. Up to now, this command line has been directly coded as a command in the Flash Movie (SWF file). The disadvantage of the old method is that the FLASH file has to be sent back to the design agency every time a change is made to the URL. The new method shown here - only available in FLASH 4 and above - uses variables to incorporate the Click-Tracking command line into the Flash Film. The result is that, instead of the FLASH file itself, only the variable in the Rich Media field of the DoubleClick DART system need be changed. Should the target URL of the Click-Event have changed, the Flash file need not be sent back to the designer. The diagrams included here show the user screen in Flash 4 or Flash 5 with our

Innovative email advocacy campaign features humorous Matrix-like scenario putting farm animals against factory farm machine to protect dream of sustainable food (New York, NY), October 7, 2003 - A wittily amusing 2-minute FlashT movie called The Meatrix will hit thousands of email inboxes nationwide on November 3 as part of an email advocacy campaign led by GRACE (Global Resource Action Center for the Environment) to entertain and educate the public on the environmental and health risks of factory farming while encouraging support of sustainable food production. The Meatrix was created by Free Range Graphics (www.freerangegraphics.com), a design firm serving non-profit advocacy groups, as part of its annual Free Range Graphics Flash Grant, which was awarded this year to the GRACE Factory Farm Project. Moopheus goes on to uncover the "real world," The Meatrix, a panorama of greedy agribusiness corporations replacing small family farms; of unhealthy conditions,

Though it's been a good 10 years since the first online pressrooms were established, far too many of them still seem as if they were designed more to aggravate reporters than to help them - and many of the problems are the same as they've always been. "Some company websites seem to be set up specifically not to provide certain contact infor-mation in terms of phone num-bers or addresses," says Bill Kisliuk, managing editor of The Napa Valley (CA) Register. "Recently I was on the website of a company that was doing business in this area, and my only option was to send them an e-mail, which I wasn't about to do because I was on deadline." Other pet peeves of reporters include pressrooms loaded with Flash animation or graphics that might charm consumers but frustrate someone on deadline. "Nobody wants to see tap-dancing bears in a pressroom," notes Mike Spataro, EVP and head of Weber Shandwick's web relations group. "We've talked to enough reporters to know they want things

This brief tutorial illustrates necessary steps to convert a PowerPoint presentation into a Macromedia Flash movie. Then we will discuss how to add a navigation bar to our new Macromedia Flash movie allowing users to browse our slides. Advantages Migrating a PowerPoint Presentation to Flash will allow users to watch your presentation using any computer--running Windows, Macintosh or Linux, only requiring a web browser with the Flash Player Plugin installed. Limitations PowerPoint animations and actions are lost with this approach, but they can be rebuilt once our presentation is imported to Flash. Background of PowerPoint presentations is also lost, but it can be easily imported into Flash. Importing WMF files into Flash A PowerPoint presentation is an 800x600 show, so we have set our Flash movie dimensions to 800x600. From (Flash MX) or Movie (Flash 5). Flash will detect the images sequence, and we must confirm to import all of the images in the sequence by clicking on the

Similar to Java, Macromedia Flash is another technology that allows animations, interactive forms, games and other jazzed-up features to be embedded in web pages. Over the releases of new versions of Flash, Macromedia has made Flash more and more controllable via programming, where they have it positioned as a competitor to HTML to build interactive web sites and applications such as an e-commerce store. 1. Flash movies load faster and saves on download time because Flash is vector based where as HTML raster. New Flash users should read this chapter in detail to understand the core elements of Flash. This chapter is for getting the flavour of Flash in context and a kick start in understanding the core Flash environment. You can adjust the size of the Stage (and thus the size of the Flash window onscreen when the animation is complete) by using the Property Inspector. To understand frames in Flash, it helps to understand the process of traditional animation.
We are going to make a flash animation that asks the user to answer a yes/no question (e.g. "Did the first Harley Davidson Motorcycle use a tomato sauce can for a carburator?") and then, depending on the answer, displays a "Correct" or "Incorrect" animation. Display the animation that depends on the user's answer. Note that we have just created a infinite loop here: Frame 1 initialises the animation and executes only once, Frame 2 is the body of the loop, and Frame 3 is the end of the loop. Try this and you should see that "Beginning animation" is only printed out when the user enters a correctly spelt answer (either "yes" or "no"). Step 2: Branching to the animations Create two different animations (e.g. a tween will do), one for "correct" from frame 4 to frame 13 on the Animations layer, and one for "incorrect" between frame 14 and frame 23. The idea is that when the animations are complete, flash will return to the loop that we created in Step 1. Your flash program

Macromedia Flash is a program that can be sued to create animations and web sites. This tutorial will focus on the animation uses of Flash. What is the instructional challenge that a Flash animation can help to clarify or illustrate? An advantage of creating Flash animations is that they can "illustrate" the educational content. In addition to the basic elements and toolbar in Flash, when editing text, buttons or graphics in Flash, various "Panels" can be opened and use to modify settings. As you work with Flash, there can be many windows and panels open at a time. It's a good practice to keep the different elements of a Flash movie on separate layers. When you select them singly, Flash highlights the layer you are working on. The final step of creating a Flash movie, is to "publish" to a Flash movie file that can be played from a web page.
In this tutorial we will create a simple Flash animation in order to show you the potential of the Mediator 7 software. Since we are going to create a simple Flash animation, select the `Flash' radio button and then click `Next.' Quite often you will want a Flash element smaller than 640x480, in which case you need to select `Custom' and enter the size you require (e.g. 400x300). In Flash mode the Toolbox bar has the following functions. The `Animation Path Tools' bar should appear horizontally on the screen. Every time you click the mouse in the work area a new node is added to the animation path. When you have finished, click on the green tick on the right-hand side of the `Animation Path Tools' bar to complete the path. We shall now add a button to start our flash animation. Click the `Preview' button and Internet Explorer will start and your Flash animation will be displayed as it would appear on a webpage.
4. Using Flash to do some statistical analyses The first permutation tests were executed using a simple press button interface on data already entered into the program: 5. Interactive Flash 8. Making a whole Flash movie with several scenes This involved making complete storyboards containing the concepts and how they were illustrated as well as joining the scenes together. 9. Writing Flash actionscript programs to analyze data More ambitious students programmed with actionscript. Bootstrap of a Regression(2000 Elections) Enter ones own data and analyze it, as in this bootstrap flash animation, written by Anita Lillie shows. As homeworks and final projects, we asked the students to write their own animations to illustrate some of the concepts we did in class: Matt Law's correlation Roberto Fernandez' outlier Dina Leyte's movie Danny Jacobs' Shakespeare Bootstrap Rob Fernandez' final project Flash Actionscripts None of these students wanted to use spreadsheets or statistical
This tutorial will cover the process of adding music including and on/off switch to a banner for a website. This banner has been simplified so the focus can be just on adding and controlling the sound/music. Feel free to add any other Flash effects to the banner as you follow along. Preparation Before heading into Flash it is a good idea to have an idea of the dimensions the final product needs to be and have the mp3 music file handy. Overview It can even animate onto the banner (if wanted). Open a new document in Flash and make the dimensions 770 by 100. Of course you could now add a bunch more animation to the rest of the banner if desired.
