06-07-04 Meatrix Chapter - Just FoodHow could a cartoon cow change millions of lives through humor, animation, and a groundbreaking new kind of online activism? It all started in early 2003, when graphic design firm Free Range Graphics invited non-profit organizations from around the country to submit proposals for their first ever Flash Activism Grant. The idea was to create a short, animated film on an issue of public concern that would be distributed via the worldwide web. After reviewing over 50 applications, Free Range awarded the grant to GRACE (Global Resource Action Center for the Environment), an organization dedicated to eliminating factory farming in favor of a sustainable food production system. When GRACE combined its extensive background on the issue with the creative minds of Free Range Graphics, The Meatrix (www.themeatrix.com) was born. The concept for the four-minute flash animation film was to parody the feature film, The Matrix by presenting striking similarities between themes in the One area of Russian grammar students struggle with is verbs of motion. Unidirectional versus multidirectional motion and perfective versus imperfective aspect add to the complexity of motion verbs. Since animation would help demonstrate the concepts behind the various forms, it would facilitate students' retention and use of them. With this project, Flash will be used to create animated examples for different motion verb forms in Russian. Flash allows the re-creation of motion in the exact form needed to demonstrate a given verb of motion. Through Flash, this team intends to include digital audio of the verb forms along with some text to help reinforce the grammatical concepts as well as the proper grammatical form: both the visual and the aural reinforce the grammar for the student. A second phase of the project beyond the workshop could be web-based exercises to accompany the animation. Software they will be working with includes Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Final Flyer2 A3.cdrIn addition to a hard-copy textbook, Power-Point presentations and videos, the authors have developed a series of Flash modules and on-line quizzing tools for use in teaching and assessing the fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering. We shall then present examples of Flash animations, which may be used with either delivery method. Although many of the Flash movies, which are accessible on the website, are self contained, they have been designed to work in conjunction with other learning objects such as videos, Power Point presentations, concept maps and the textbook: "Earth, Air, Fire and Water: Elements of Materials Science" [6]. Figure 4 is a sequence of screen captures from the main Flash animation in UNIT 10. The role of this extensive sequence of Flash movies is to present an alternative-learning mode for the student: the content closely matches two book chapters: yet the content in the Flash movies is not simply an animated version lf376, Applications: LF Tip: essential firefox extensionsby Guido Socher (homepage) About the author: Guido really likes it when a computer is tailored to his needs and looks like he wants it. This is a small tip. From now on LinuxFocus will have at least one new tip every month. This article discusses the versatility of Flash as the middleware for the mathematics engines such as CAS or Java classes in the server-side tier. The examples in this article demonstrate the Flash-enabled UI harnessing the power of Flash, which brings the sophistication of the desktop application onto the standard web application over the Internet. Flash technology has evolved into a powerful application development platform, adhering to today's client-server technology standards. Based on ActionScript, the versatile javascript-like object-oriented programming language, the Flash UI supports TCP/IP socket that sends and loads the external text files as well as the JPEG images on the fly to and from the mathematics engines at theflashMX041_of_2Learn the basic components of Flash MX to create simple animations. A comprehensive tool used to create scalable, interactive animations, presentations and websites using both vector and bitmap graphics. You can create based images in Flash or import them from FreeHand or Illustrator. Bitmaps cannot be created in Flash, although they can be imported and manipulated in Flash. Flash MX automatically opens with a new file (or select File > New) and a background color of white (if not you can change it). Keyframes are where changes occur in your animation. Move the Playhead back and forth (scrub) over the frames to preview your first animation. 7. In order to make your animation a bit more realistic, you can add some frames in between the keyframes. Open DreamWeaver and insert your Flash Movie by selecting the Flash object from the Common Objects palette.Traditional computer inputs are, by no means, ideal when it comes to creating or controlling animation. While animations have started to have a dominant presence in our computing environment, creating animation is still thought to be a highly specialized task. We are not interested in creating state of the art animations that cost millions of dollars. Instead, we are interested in empowering everyday computer users with tools to create inexpensive animations they could incorporate into their computing environment. We propose and demonstrate a multi-mode input mechanism for an animation control system Approach: Our approach is to develop an animation control system that combines speech and traditional computer inputs. We create a domain with simple animation control commands which one can master in a matter of minutes. We make use of a popular animation program, Flash MX, for creating animations for ease of use and quality of animation. Speech input is processed via GIF Animation GIF Animation GIF Animation - Storyboarding of the animation Plan (storyboarding) Create individual images Use GIF animation software to combine individual images into single animated GIF GIF Animation- Macromedia Flash GIF Animation- MS GIF Animator Flash: Beyond Animations Flash installed on 98% of computers Plan for the other 2% Not just for animations anymore Unknownchoose to develop games using Flash MX 2004 for the sheer enjoyment of seeing a creative idea come to life, a specific project for a client, an exercise to learn the details of programming in Flash, or as a way to express themselves artistically. We'll be pushing Flash to its limits. Whatever your reason for making games, Flash provides the perfect medium to do so. On top of all that, creating a game with Flash allows you to deploy your games to millions of people within minutes, giving game developers today more opportu-nity to make a name for themselves and gain exposure than ever before. The Potential One of the most critical roles that Flash plays today is to provide people with the ability to entertain an audience. In the case of Flash MX 2004, games are a perfect way to generate advertising revenue through the Web. Craig Swann, CEO of CRASH!MEDIA (www.crashmedia.com), had these words to say on the importance of games in Macromedia Flash in the modern online"Product Demo Channel" allows cus-tomers and prospects to view interactive demonstrations of your product or solu-tion via streaming video, audio and Flash animation on the web at anytime, from anywhere. Flash MX 2004 attempts to do just that -- make the development of e-Learning in Flash sim-pler, more intuitive and more accessible to the e-Learning course developer masses. This ar ticle is primarily a step-by-step tutorial to show you how to create e-Learning content with the new Macro-media Flash MX 2004. I will briefly address some of the new features and then dive into a "how-to" for a small Flash e-Learning demo. It's meant to quickly show you some features of Flash MX 2004 that allow it to be used by a non-exper t to create some impressive, interactive e-Learning. The latest version of Flash MX has been specifically designed for the instructional designer or subject matter expert who has no experience with Flash or with ActionScript. One of the challenging aspects of learning Flash has been gaining an understanding of how to useMultimedia AsstFrom our free-access student companion web sites, to our password-protected instructor web sites and Instructor's Resource CD-ROMs, you will find numerous resources to enhance the effectiveness of your lecture presentations. The MultiMedia Assistant booklet provides an overview of many of our standard educa-tional resources, as well as helpful hints for using many popular software programs and downloadable plug-ins, to ensure that you make the most out of the material available for your course web sites and lecture presentations. The accompanying Instructor's Resource CD-ROM has been designed in tandem with your textbook and provides electronic images and multimedia content tailored to your particular course. Many Instructor's Resource CD-ROMs include videos and animations for use in lecture pre-sentations or as part of a companion web site. To guarantee that a Flash animation will run properly, we recommend that you install the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player. The course will use the Macromedia Flash 4 software to create and publish flash files. Flash movies are commonly used for navigation interfaces, web page intros, and animated page elements, but the possibilities are infinite. Flash files are commonly referred to as movies because of their rich multimedia content. Before we begin creating our own Flash movie, let's take a look at some innovative uses of Flash. Please visit the sites below to get a taste of just some of the possibilities of Flash. When you move your mouse over any Flash movie and click the right mouse button, the Flash context menu will come up. To begin, lets open up the Macromedia Flash program if it is not already open. The way to do this would be to have the `arms waving' animation occur inside a symbol, and the `move across screen' animation would occur on the main stage. Actionscript is only present in Flash 5, but a rudimentary predecessor of it exists in Flash 4. + Many programs can create animated gifs, including ImageReady and Flash + All web browsers can view animated gifs without a plug-in. Prior to Flash, almost all web-based animations were saved as series of static pixel-based images. Flash is a vector-based animation tool. This means that Flash does not actually store animations as a series of frames. Rather, Flash animations are saved as a set of mathematical instructions indicating how to display shapes on the screen at various times. So when using the Flash movie file type, you can have long animations at low file sizes. Unfortunately, because it is not a pixel-based image editor, Flash has limited capabilities for animating photographs. Because Flash is a vector-based animation tool (see page 2 for more information on vector-based animation), you must indicate frames in which key changes have been made. Saving in Flash format for the web The native file format for Flash on the web is the ShockWave Flash (.SWF) format. ABSTRACT Interactivity, rather than animation has been increasingly credited as being a key factor in engaging online learners and assisting them to learn more effectively. There is also an increasing use of online animation that has a high novelty effect and can be very seductive. If used wisely, it can garner attention and offer a certain level of engagement, but overuse of animation can be distracting and confusing to users. Animation's novelty effect often rapidly wears off whereas interactivity is more durable and sustainable because it involves learners in their learning and encourages them to have more responsibility and better control over their learning. The author's experimentation with Flash scripting combined with the advice and scripting solutions from two of her colleagues who had considerable Flash scripting and online development experience, assisted in the prototyping of the projects. Flash script The Flash movies in the two projects are easily editable, FlashConnectorMacromedia® Flash® allows you a greater range of assessment tools through animation, sound, simulations, and linked interactions.
