Normalization was the first pillar, followed by the Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1978, as friendship became the mantra of leaders on both sides. Contemporary Chinese and Japanese political figures who rely on the friendship diplomacy framework are more likely to hurt the relationship by preserving a mirage of good relations and preventing new, necessary adjustments from being made that might address the sources of tensions and stabilize relations over time. The increasing connection between the Taiwanese and Japanese societies inevitably implicates Japan in cross-strait relations, inflaming Chinese attitudes against Japan. This new confidence among the Japanese in their nation's capacity for, and commitment to, democracy has also influenced Japanese attitudes toward China more broadly. This game was played within the context of a friendship unit. 1. Students will be able to discuss specific behaviors for making and keeping friends, "friendship skills", and specific behaviors that block friendships, "blockers". The idea of the game is to have a certain number of students acting as friendship skill people (yellow belts) and other students acting as friendship blockers (brown belts). The remaining students will act as classmates (3rd color belts). One side of the playing area is determined to be the friendship side and the other side will be the blocker side. The round is over when there are no classmates left sitting on the center line. friendship, Epicurus, security, happiness, philosophy, Stern-Gillet, true friendship, pain, pleasure, life, trust, death, sake, desire, wisdom. According to Epicurus, such a person should not be aloof or eager. Emphasizing the role of security in happiness, Epicurus feels that, "those who possess the power of securing themselves completely from their neighbors live most happily with one another."14 Although friendship produces happiness, it also produces pain for most people at the death of their friend. One account claims that the end of life should always be happiness or, and friendship is a means to that end, whereas the other claims that friendship is desirable for itself even when there is no sign of happiness.22 Many modern scholars such as J.M Rist and Philip Mitsis have labeled these two views egotistic and altruistic, respectively.23 Nevertheless such terminology is unnecessary because the terms exaggerate the tensions between these two accounts.24 The modern terminology accounts for two people: the individual and his relation, whereas the problem faced in Epicurean friendship accounts for two perspectives: the motive of pleasure and pain versus risk in developed friendship.25 Making note of these two distinctions, Stern-Gillet writes, "While Epicurus's problem is: 'can the pain that I endure for my friend's sake be integrated into the pleasure that our friendship should hold for me?', the modern opposition between altruism and egoism yields the question: "why should I disregard the pursuit of my own interest to further that of my friend?"26 Thus, the two views, labeled egotistic and altruistic, will be further developed and analyzed using the term hedonistic friendship and self-ended friendship, respectively. Many critics like Cicero find a contradiction between Epicurus's call for self-sufficiency and friendship itself. Epicurus says, "the wise man who has accustomed himself to the bare necessities knows how to give rather than to receive.
