GMGA MISSION STATEMENT: To stimulate the love for and increase the knowledge of gardening, and to voluntarily and enthusiastically share this Knowledge with others. I encourage you to contact the veteran Master Gardeners in your area, as well as your District Director on the board, or me if you have any questions. Remember that one purpose of the SCOOP is to provide you with a means to tell your stories to other gardeners and to help in bonding between Master Gardeners across Georgia. This garden is being accomplished in part through the planning and fund raising of local master gardeners. For two years now, master gardeners have been donating hours of their time and providing the children with a variety of activities. Many thanks to the Georgia Master Gardener Association for providing the opportunity for kids to learn about the environment and gardening in a hands-on project right at their own school! Gardening and agriculture are in themselves unnatural practices. Seasoned gardeners can tell what soil they have by the look, feel, smell and taste - yes taste! Composting: Organic gardeners favor this method of utilizing organic wastes from the house and garden. The method is explained in COG Reference Series #4, AComposting for Gardeners@.   Weeds and pests must be controlled, water applied when needed and harvesting done on time. Tall plants such as sweet corn, tomatoes and pole beans should be planted on the north or west side of the garden where they will not shade smaller vegetable crops.
