With close to 3 million people in Maricopa County, a large percent-age of them newcomers to the Sonoran Desert, there is a tremen-dous need for public education regarding appropriate selection, placement and care of plants. The Master Gardener program seeks to improve the health of plants and people while promoting environ-mental responsibility in the garden. It includes the efficient use of water, fertilizers and pesticides and the reduction of green waste. What has been done? Two 17-week training sessions were held in 1999; 101 new Master Gardeners were trained. Using the multiplier effect, training Impact Master Gardeners immediately give back to the community by teaching others what they've learned them-selves. Participants said they im-proved their general gardening knowledge about soils, turf, prun-ing, vegetables, citrus and fruit trees, ornamentals and botany.

We all enjoy fresh garden-grown fruits andvegetables. By using Sound Gardening techniques, it is possible to produce top-quality crops while maintaining soil fertility and protecting our natural waters. The Soujld Gardening approach to fruit and vegetable gardening is to select disease-resistant species and vari-eties, to properly plant them in well prepared sites, and to minimize the use of chemicals. Where to Plant To get the most out of a garden, it is important to choose the right site. It should have a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight, have well-drained soil and be away from shade-casting trees. Plant the gardenon level ground, avoiding sloping areas that are likely to erode.   Hydro-Tube Gardening provides an introductory activity to motivate student interest in hydroponics. Students learn the basic principles of hydroponic gardening. It requires little space, time, and expense in the classroom. Students will propagate marigold seeds, set up a hydroponic system, and supply nutrients to the growing plants. Materials Materials are supplied for a class of 30 students. Marigold seeds germinate in 1 week. Static water culture is the method used in Hydro-Tube Gardening. Using the tight control afforded by hydroponics, gardeners can experiment with different pH ranges to determine the most suitable growing medium and nutrient solution for a particular plant.

To set up one or more hydroponic systems, to collect data for a four-week period to determine which system resulted in the best plant growth, and to analyze the role of different environmental factors, such pH, light, and aeration, on plants grown in the absence of soil. Materials: Depending on which hydroponic systems are selected, different materials will be needed. In all the methods below, the "nutrient solution" may be prepared by contacting your local hydroponics supply store (listed in your local Yellow Pages) and following instructions from the supplier. Plants In Space Read through the Materials section on page 1 to determine what materials, space, and other items are needed before beginning the activity. The setup will depend on which hydroponic systems are chosen. Plan on groups of at least four or more members. Divide the class into experiment groups, and assign each group to build at least one hydroponic system of their choice or your choice (depending

IN A NUTSHELL This book is designed to serve as an introduction to the gardening practices of Native American civilizations by means of stories, traditions and actual practice in growing a garden. The information given covers everything from preparing soil and identifying harmful weeds to legends and teachings about the origins of plants and the customs The book also contains a pronunciation key for Native American words, a glossary and an index. The sections called "Bridges: From Legends to Life" draw connections between the stories and the activi-ties. Illustrations include maps, drawings and black and white photographs. Primary sources are used and referenced throughout. Material continuously challenges teacher and learner to consider different perspectives and to engage in inquiry. Focuses on many concepts in natural and social sciences (in particular plant science and ecology) and at a variety of scales.
Gardening naturally and safely is gaining more and more popularity. We are now aware of the harmful and adverse effects on our health and on the environment due to the periodical use of pesticides and chemicals in horticulture and agriculture, for example allergies, intoxication, pollution of our groundwater and watercourses, and even soil erosion. Here at Premier Tech, horticulture is our passion. Our team of experts have studied the power of nature since the early 1970's. Over the years, we have come to realize that the best way to develop and understand natural products is to bring the miracles of nature, found in our forests and in the wild, at home. Premier Tech Biotechnologies can now bring handling and putting in your soil. MYKE is the only natural product of its kind, available for consumers on the market today. MYKE is an innovative way of thinking and a unique way of gardening developed by our researchers.
