Organic gardening is just as easy as traditional gardening with chemicals once you know what to do. The main difference is that instead of trying to beat nature at her own game, we are getting nature to help us at our game! Also, when gardening organically, it is perhaps more important to ensure that the soil is prepared as well as possible prior to planting. The idea is to give plants the right conditions to thrive and be healthy enough to prevent or diminish the effects of attacks by pests and diseases in the first place. Then, in the event that your plants do require some assistance to fight off pests or diseases, we can use natural control methods that will not damage the ecosystem or our own health. Soil Preparation Asking a gardening neighbour is another option. Compost is a very important part of organic gardening. This pamphlet gives a broad overview of organic gardening, covering the very basic principles involved.

With the exception of a few programs started by some visionary people, gardening was something we learned at home. What if gardening wasn't passed to you from an adult relative or family friend? What about those "natural born gardeners" who never get the chance to plant a seed because they never had the chance to dig in the soil or plant a seed? With this issue of your Community Greening Review, we focus on gardening with schools, a perfect vehicle for introducing gardening as a lifelong hobby and source of inspiration, and so much more. Kerrigan, the Extension Agent for Horticulture and Natural Resources, worked with the master gardeners to gather curriculum mate-rials and design a year's worth of lesson plans. GreenThumb's annual conference for gardeners also offers more for teachers and students and is even attracting some teen-agers. Training for participat-ing teachers, both gardeners and nongardeners, on how to use the garden to support the curriculum and

MF2134 Raised Bed Gardening

Raised bed gardening has gained popularity over the past few years. Raised bed garden-ing is fun and enjoy-able for the gardening enthusiast. Raised bed gardens offer several advantages over conventional gardening plots. Some gardeners suggest not using a support but, instead, mounding the soil. Most gardeners use some sort of framing materials such as railroad ties, landscape timbers, planking, rock, manufactured blocks or bricks. However, some gardeners still prefer to line the sides of beds with polyethylene plastic so that roots do not come Do not overlook fall gardening. Many raised bed gardeners use drip irrigation. As with any gardening product, the fun and rewards come from your own experimentation and finding the techniques that work best for you.
These gardening safety tips have been prepared for to you by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) to help you have a healthy and active gardening season. CPA recommends gardeners take the S.M.A.R.T. approach (Stretch, Move, Add it up, Reduce Strain, Talk to a physiotherapist) to ensure you get the most out of your gardening season: STRETCH - BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER GARDENING Stretching - as a warm-up, as a break during repetitive movement, and as a cool-down - helps you to move LOWER BACK AND LEGS Movements should be slow and controlled, you should feel a gentle stretch of the muscle - stretching should never Once you feel a stretch, hold the position for 10 - 15 seconds. Do not bounce or jerk; and repeat each stretch two MOVE - TODAY FOR TOMORROW Get moving. Gardening is an excellent way to get your whole body in motion. - Section off your garden to find your "easy zone" - that permits your body to work in a comfortable posture - and try to do your work within this
The garden, titled Urban Land Use and Food Security, was designed to demonstrate that city dwellers can use small bits of land to raise organic vegetables, in ways that preserve the environment and maximize food production.   what is it? It's getting down and dirty to produce your own fruit and veg (organic of course, which means no chemical fertilizers or pesticides - you don't want to poison your garden, wildlife or your family). What you get is fruit & veg in season all year round (more in the summer of course), fresh, organic, and straight from the garden - once you've done it you'll realise the difference in taste. Food grown using chemical fertilizers really doesn't taste the same, because chemical fertilizers are water soluble, and so are taken up by the plants as they drink, whether they need them or not; they grow faster than they would naturally, and become large and watery. Finished compost, or well-rotted manure (well-rotted is a phrase you hear a lot, but it's important) is not water soluble, and plants can take as much of it as they need. As for pesticides, let's take slugs as an example: slug pellets or other pesticides will certainly kill them, but not all of them, as there are so

Whether you mow your lawn weekly, tend to your flower beds, or plant a vegetable garden; you are probably aware that gardening is good for you. Communing with nature helps to relieve stress, uplift the spirits, improve our surroundings, and get some exercise in the process. Just how much exercise may surprise you. Weeding, or planting seedlings and shrubs takes as much energy as walking four miles an hour, and burns about 320 calories/ hour. According to a new study done by researchers at Stanford, the University of Minnesota, and the University of South Carolina, physical activity can be equated to METs, or metabolic equivalents. Jeff Restuccio, aerobic gardening expert, and author of a new book "Fitness the Dynamic Gardening Way" offers some suggestions on how to make gardening a safe and beneficial way to get fit at any age. And while you are gardening, don't forget your health and safety: use sun block wear long, baggy pants, if possible wear gloves wear sunglasses

There are a number of ways to prevent pest problems before they occur. Preventative strategies include proper plant health care practices that make plants more resistant to pests. In addition, cultural, mechanical and biological methods can be used to manage pests and keep them at levels that will not impact the health of the plant(s). Cultural Control Methods Methods used to modify the growing conditions to boost plant vigour or impact a pest's life cycle are known as cultural controls. Here are a few strategies for pest control and healthy gardens. Landscape Planning-Appropriate Plants for Environmental Conditions Choosing plants that are most appropriate for your garden environment can be the most important factor in growing healthy plants and avoiding pest problems.
