Gardening as Community Fact Sheet

Why a Program for Mental Health? gardening and plant programs (Eberbach, 1987). Why a 21C "Gardening as Community Roots" Program? Using gardening as a therapeutic tool is not a new idea; in fact, before psychiatry was an established science, gardening was considered a cure for some mental illness (Relf, 1981). Gardening and plant programs have several benefits for children, including physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional. Physically, gardening programs help to develop basic motor skills. Using gardening programs consistently in the context of school could not only be useful to mental health, but could plausibly be helpful for applied learning of science. What Will a "Gardening as Community Roots" Program Look Like? The School of the 21st Century would like to utilize the healing power of gardening and apply this to within school programs. Some of our initial ideas to involve gardening within the classroom and after-school programs include the following:

Market Gardening: A Start-up Guide

Abstract: Market gardening, which entails the intense production of high-value crops, gives farmers the potential to increase their income from a few acres. It is also of interest to people looking at agriculture as an alternative lifestyle. This publication provides an overview of issues you need to be aware of as you consider undertaking market gardening, and suggests helpful resources. Market gardening is the commercial production of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and other plants, on a scale larger than a home garden, yet small enough that many of the principles of gardening can be applied. Market gardening is often oriented toward local markets, although production for shipment to more distant markets is also possible. Many market gardeners try to maximize their income by selling directly to consumers, thus bypassing wholesalers and other middlemen. Subscription gardening is a strategy that has gained a lot of interest in the past decade, and it can take

Landscaping and gardening for birds is gaining in popularity as people become more aware of the benefits of having a diverse environment around them. Bring-ing these beautiful creatures near homesites also helps manage insect populations and maintain the ecological bal-ance of outdoor environments. Gardeners and landscapers should be aware that the predominant habitat type in the area will determine which bird species can be attracted to a yard. Some species such as the cardinal and mocking-bird require shrub cover. In particular, if you have a new house in a recently built residential area, give the yard time to mature. As the shrubs and trees grow, so will the number of birds in your yard. New areas with few mature trees and little shelter for birds will take several years to become hospitable places for birds requiring trees and shrubs. Use a diverse selection of plant materials to provide food and shelter for birds. Many tree and shrub species can be useful for

announced today the release of the `Got Dirt?' gardening toolkit created to promote home, school and community gardening as a fun way to improve overall health by growing more fruits and vegetables and increasing physical activity. "With spring on the way, now is the time to think about your garden," said Secretary Nelson. "The `Got Dirt?' toolkit will help families, daycare centers, schools, and communities get started to make their garden project a success." The `Got Dirt?' toolkit includes gardening tips, promotes gardening as a physical activity and explains why its important to grow and eat the fruits and vegetables from your own garden. Experts recommend that everyone eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Increasing physical activity is also an important element to maintaining a healthy weight and improving overall health. The Department of Health and Family Services is sponsoring eight regional training sessions around Wisconsin. These workshops
So what could be better than gardening? Here are some highlights of the many benefits of gardening along with tips and advice to guide your efforts when you are there. Gardening is productive physical activity out in the fresh air--the essence of active living. GARDENING WORKS Gardening is enjoyable and rewarding in itself, but it has spin-off benefits, too. Study after study shows that even modest levels of physical activity--such as that found in various gardening chores--have a positive effect on health. A study reported in the American Journal of Public Health, for example, showed that reduced medical costs were associated with participation in active sports, gardening, and medical self-care. "Such practices," noted the researchers, "should be encouraged among older adults as a matter of national health policy."1 An article in the Journal of Public Health Policy presents the case for stronger public policies in support of urban gardening as a means to improve population
