Chapter10

Diversity in the system creates stability. A well-planned, thoughtful design, whether small and incremental or on a grand scale, is where it all starts. A Bay-Friendly Garden is one that is an asset to the larger, local environment, not a liability. It is conscious of both human needs and desires, and mindful of its impact on the environment. It begins with good design decisions based on personal requirements, as well as what's possible, operating within the larger context of waste shed, watershed, and food shed. A Bay-Friendly Garden design can be just a small section of the yard or a complete yard makeover all at once. Whether you're doing the designing yourself or hiring a professional landscape architect, there are a few basic concepts that can help you make environmentally-ap-propriate, Bay-Friendly decisions. Remember, you don't have to change everything at once. Design is or-ganic and ongoing.

"Exceptional Quality" biosolids used in landscapes and home gardens improve the physical and chemical characteristics of soil. Seeking Solutions Landscapes in urban and suburban developments often have little or no natural topsoil. The topsoil that may have existed before has often been compacted by heavy equipment during building construc-tion. Soils like these can benefit from amendments such as biosolids composts that provide nutrients and organic matter and improve soil permeability and tilth. Benefits of Biosolids Biosolids provide soils with the nutrients that tend to be deficient in Pacific Northwest soils. Biosolids products are used in land-scaping and gardening in the following ways: Grangeville (Idaho) Private composting companies receive biosolids from multiple communities and market their products to landscapers and home gardeners.

Across Canada, a community gardening boom is seeing urban dwellers turning empty lots and rooftops into patches of green By nature, gardeners are passionate about their land, and none more so than those living in cities, where gre e n space is rare. When I heard of the city's com-munity gardening program, I applied and became one of 14,000 Montreal-ers - more than 1.5 percent of the adult population - who have their own three-by-six-metre slice of heaven. Quebec has more com-munity gardening plots across 22 cities than the remaining provinces com-bined - more than 10,000 in all. Montreal's community gardening pro-gram has 97 gardens and 8,200 individ-ual allotments. By 1975, an organized and official community gardening program was underway, and during that hot sum-mer, local firemen lent gardeners their hoses to water plots. In October, Toronto hosted the 25th annual conference of the Amer-ican Community Gardening Associa-tion (ACGA), which brings

Liz Ellis and Greg Hostetler, editors Sue Truman shows the trophy that she and neighbors received for their traffic circle garden at 28 Ave NE & NE 62 St. Thanks to all of you who participated in the first ever Traffic Circle Garden Contest. The awards evening was a great success, with over 100 volunteers attending. We all enjoyed an evening of entertainment with Ciscoe Morris of TV gardening fame serving as master of ceremony. Many lucky attendees took home door prizes, including cook books and gift certificates to local nurseries. The finest examples of traffic calming beauty were awarded engraved watering can trophies. Compared to gardening in the backyard, streetside gardening has a few peculiarities. On my block, curbside gardeners are working toward drought-tolerant, all-season leaf and bloom. One caveat to this transformation from sod to wildlife habitat is those gardeners who are unaware of or ignore the City's planting strip guidelines; dense, high-Continued on Page
Docents: Docents may conduct guided tours of exhibitions, facilitate film interpretations, present lecture format talks or assist viewers in looking at and thinking about art. Docents should enjoy learning and sharing ideas, be able to make a commitment to the training and preparation for tours, and enjoy meeting people. It is important that docents are receptive to the needs of others and hold non-judgmental views about art. The training consists of weekly meetings from September to June. Docents are asked to commit to one year of service and to conduct tours on approximately a bi-weekly basis. Gallery-In-The Schools: Volunteers take original works of art or reproductions into elementary classrooms to help children learn the skills to appreciate art. Gardening: Volunteers should have some previous gardening experience although this is not essential. Volunteers are asked to commit two hours every two weeks and to bring their own gardening tools.

He has been exploring the islands of southern California and Baja California for more than 25 years, documenting the plant life, mapping vegetation and rare plants, and leading fi eld trips. These islands are natural areas known for windswept landscapes, rugged coastlines, and unspoiled beaches, often teaming with marine mammals and birds. Plants from the islands have been cultivated on the California mainland since the 1800s. During this slide-illustrated lecture, Steve Junak will take us on a tour of many of these plants in their natural habitats, from the familiar Channel Islands in the north to the natural lava gardens of San Martin Island, the foggy ridge tops and remote islets of Guadalupe Island, and the desert canyons of Cedros Island. Steve has written or co-authored a number of articles and books about the islands and is the principal author of A Flora of Santa Cruz Island. An avid nature photographer, his photographs have been published in numerous books, including

Please print, type, or write your report legibly. NOTE: The age group is your age as of December 31 of this year. Group projects should be entered based on the age of the oldest group member. For group projects, indicate the name of the youth who is preparing the report. Gardening is fun and popular. Any participant who previously was awarded a Grand National award for gardening is ineligible to further compete in the same age category, but may compete in the next higher age category (For example, if a 6 year old wins, the next year must enter 9-11 age category rather than 5-8).
Watershed To attract the greatest number and variety of butterflies and have them as residents in your yard, you will need to have plants that serve the needs of all life stages of the butterfly. They need specific plant species on which to lay eggs, food plants for the larvae, plants on which to form a chrysalis and nectar sources as food for the adult. Larval Host Plants In their larval stage, butterflies require very specific host plants on which to feed. For example, the monarch butterfly, in its larval stage, feeds only on plants in the milkweed family (Asclepiadaceae) such as common milkweed, butterfly weed and swamp milk-weed. Don't worry if butterfly caterpillars are munching on the leaves--remember, this is their food. They rarely defoliate plants. Adults searching for nectar are most attracted to orange, purple, yellow or red blossoms that are flat-topped or clustered and have short flower tubes that allow the butterfly to reach the nectar with its proboscis.

Household gardening projects in Asia Products from multi-purpose gardens spice up staples and add to family medicines. Intensive gardening can turn this land into a productive source of food and economic security. The perception that household gardening is easy often leads project people to promote gardens in areas where technical, environmental and socioeconomic conditions are inappropriate. Gardening may also interfere with household enterprises by using up scarce land, labor time and capital. If any other facility (such as tube well) is absolutely essential to project sustainability, it should preferably be provided only after participants have demonstrated their keenness to engage in household gardening despite the constraints. Policy support at the highest administrative levels is essential to guarantee the success of gardening enterprises. The project promotes the household gardening of the ivy gourd, a vine containing large green leaves high in vitamin

INTRODUCTION Through the years, gardening and lawn care activities have become more and more a part of our lives. They provide the opportunity to enjoy leisure time and make homes more attractive and valuable. Many people who are involved in these activities identify stress reduction as another benefit. Even in slow economic growth periods, sales associated with these activities have remained relatively strong. Among other factors, growth has been driven by increasing population, and by increasing disposable income. Consumption patterns have changed as demographic characteristics of the population have changed. In particular, the `baby boomer' generation has entered a phase in which it is more interested in home improvement activities like gardening, and is devoting more resources to those activities. Gardening also is attractive because it involves activities appropriate to the whole family, and time together can be shared. Size and growth rate of the green industry are two
