Objective: To teach how gardening is good for your health and tips on how to grow a garden. The goal is to make gardening look simple and fun. You may want to begin with a comment such as this; " Today I would like to talk about gardening. My goal is to share with you information that will make gardening easy, fun and a healthful way of life for you." Begin with a discussion about the benefits one would get from gardening. "Can you think of some ways you could benefit from gardening?" Gardening requires some work, but a lot of it involves exercise. The amount of money you spend on gardening supplies is small compared to buying fresh or canned vegetables. The goal here is to share information about gardening that makes it a simple activity.

Some plants are escaping from gardens around Australia and invading bushlands and farms. Once they have `jumped the fence', garden plants can become environmental weeds, spreading and choking out native plants and animals. These plants should be replaced with safer alternatives, such as local native plants or species with low weed potential. How do they spread? Plants may spread into bushland and farms in many ways: Birds and foxes eat fruit and seed and deposit them in nearby bushland Pets and people carry seeds on fur, clothing and shoes The wind blows seeds many kilometres Seeds and plant parts wash down drains into waterways where they grow and spread People dump garden waste over back fences or into bushland and forests Seeds and plant parts are carried on vehicle tyres, tools and equipment What can you do? There are several steps that gardeners can take to help prevent the spread of weeds: What's in your backyard? Look over your fence Educate fellow gardeners and

ELL and Gardening

Merino and Hammond (1998) have illustrated one instructional adaptation: school gardening. Researchers who described school garden programs such as a garden for kindergarten students in Hawaii, an inner-city master gardeners program in Texas, a rural program designed to grow snack food in Vermont, and a summer program for inner-city youth in Los Angeles, reported on routine hands-on activities. Overall, the literature describes hands-on experiences and the use of actual objects as major components in school gardening. Culturally Relevant Content Enhances Learning and Can be Included in Student Gardening She recommended that, as part of a multicultural gardening unit, students should go on a tour of neighborhood gardens to take notes and sketch what they see. Similarly, in her article on integrating school gardening into different subject areas, Eames-Sheavly (1998), offered several approaches that would help reveal the cultural importance of different foods.   Plant only environmentally safe species in your gardens. Work towards and promote new landscape design that is friendly to regional ecosystems. 2. Seek information on which species are invasive in your area. Sources could include botanical gardens, horticulturists, conservationists, and government agencies. Remove invasive species from your land and replace them with non-invasive species suited to your site and needs. 3. Do not trade plants with other gardeners if you know they are species with invasive characteristics. 4. Request that botanical gardens and nurseries promote, display and sell only non-invasive species. 5. Help educate your community and other gardeners in your area through personal contact, and in such settings as garden clubs and other civic groups. 7. Invite speakers knowledgeable on the invasive species issue to speak to garden clubs, master gardeners, schools and other community groups.

Raking, lifting, digging, kneeling, planting -- this is enough activity to challenge any athlete. Gardening and yard work may not be Olympic sports, but they are strenuous physical activities. In a recent poll, 88 per cent of Ontario chiropractors indicated that working in the garden and yard were the most common sources of neck and back pain they treat during the warm weather season. To help you enjoy the fruits of your labour during this yard and gardening season, we recommend you keep these tips in mind: Stretch out before you head out. Light to moderate gardening can burn between 300 to 400 calories an hour, compared to the 40 calories an hour while sitting quietly. So take the time to prepare your body for activity, always warm-up and cool down your muscles. Add a short walk and you'll have topped off your routine with overall conditioning. Now you're ready for your open-air workout! Use good technique while lifting.

Contributions to RIF are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. It is a book-based thematic approach to reading designed to engage children in the book experience. Each Story Sampler includes hands-on, cross-curricular activities for books that are linked by a common theme. And these motivational activities are an easy way to excite children's interest in reading and help them associate books and reading with positive experiences and that means fun! The ideas you will find in each Story Sampler show you how to build anticipation and excitement in your RIF programs. The following books all demonstrate how gardening brightens our world, on an individual scale or on a grander scale. Each page in this book begins with a letter of the alphabet and reveals a colorful display of something having to do with gardening. Explain that some gardeners or farmers cover a large piece of land and need large machines to do all the planting and watering they have to do.

A healthy environment is a collection of healthy parts. By welcoming a wide variety of plants and animals into your yard, you help to create a natural balance which can better resist damage by disease and infestation. At the same time, you open the door to making many new wild friends. While all wildlife species have individual preferences, they also have some common needs - food, water, shelter and space. These should always be considered in designing for wildlife. Providing food may be a mixed blessing if you don't also provide hiding places from predators. Many cute, furry or feathered friends depend on a wide variety of other types of life for their survival. For example, many birds depend on insects for food. Some butterflies are partial to wild plants we banish from our yards (wild carrot, milkweed).

Hydroponic Gardening

The gardening season comes and goes quickly in Alaska, as we all know. Why? Winter should not be a reason to pay higher prices for the vegetable you want at your table. Gardening simply does not have to end. With very little space, growing indoors without "creating a mess" can be accomplished by hydroponics. Hydroponic gardening strives to optimize the nutritional and environmental conditions for plant growth in a controlled system, thus providing optimal yields. In order to optimize plant growth, we must first understand the plant requirements and the process in which they are obtained. FUNDAMENTAL PLANT PROCESSES Supplying air, light, nutrients and water are conditions required for indoor gardening.

Small plot vegetable gardening

Many people grow their own fruits and vegetables for fresh, quality produce. However, the traditional, large, backyard garden doesn't fit everyone's lifestyle. Instead, some gardeners use intensive gardening techniques that help them get the most from their smaller plots. Container vegetable gardening is another option. This publication provides recommendations and techniques for growing quality vegetables in a limited space. Site Selection and Preparation Choose a site that receives at least 6 hours of sun each day. Square foot gardening--This is a form of intensive gardening in which the garden is marked off into squares of space for crops rather than planting in straight rows. (For more information, see Square Foot Gardening, by Mel Bartholomew, Rodale Press, 1981.)
