The initial team formed with a High School teacher and University Professor came unraveled before any real progress was made. Even though we met several times details of how the project should be handled were not clearly determined. Before more concrete plans could be made the university professor took a position at another university out of state and the high school teacher did not have a class that could participate in the project. At the beginning of the fall semester 2000 I didn't think the project would ever come to fruition. I had to start all over. I felt a great deal of frustration that this was becoming a more difficult task than I had imagined. However, I still had a strong desire to engage students in this project and the frustration pushed me to think differently about my partners. They were eager to become partners and were very interested in a raised gardening project for their consumers of all ages. He decided that his students could interview the older adults

How I got started in gardening As with most gardeners, I was born with dirt under my nails and a green thumb. I was hooked and the love of gardening never went away. During high school, gardening was one of those after-school activities that kept me out of trouble and talking to my parents. Since then, my passion for gardening has never waned. Although there are many challenges to gardening in the Far North, there are also many rewards. But long day lengths allow Alaska gardeners to grow vegetables such as the Shogun broccoli to 14 inches in diameter in just three months time. As part of this job, I teach gardening classes, have a gardening TV spot, and answer a lot of gardening questions. Alaska gardeners, on the whole, are very innovative. If you have gardening questions, comments or stories to share please contact me at michelesgardenak@yahoo.com.

There's nothing more intriguing than looking over other people's hedges and gates, but to be actually allowed into these gardens is a rare and enjoyable experience. "As judges, we were at loggerheads last year when it came to the final decision. I have a feeling it will be worse this year. Rooftop Gardening in Montreal

Stewart Chisolm, Evergreen Foundation The presence of dynamic natural areas is critical to the health and sustainability of our cities. Across Canada, groups are taking action to restore degraded ecosystems and improve the health of their communities. Beyond the important ecological benefits, community greening contributes to the creation of sustainable communities both socially and economically. These projects empower citizens to make positive change, strengthen community ties and help create a sense of place. And increasingly, accessible green space is seen as a driving force for enhancing local economic development. For the past 14 years, Evergreen's Common Grounds program has supported local efforts to protect and enhance local green space, ensuring that citizens have the knowledge and tools to develop successful projects. Rooftop Gardening in Montreal Alternatives and Santropol Roulant are cooperating on a project to promote rooftop gardening in Montreal (and around the

If you are considering building a new pond do NOT start until you have finished reading this primer at the very least. The information contained in this FREE primer is to allow all interested pond keepers to explore important topics that make a big difference in pond keeping. Koi produce 3 times more waste than goldfish of the same size - because they eat 3 times more. Do not use foods with high ash contents - this indicates low quality raw materials have been used in the food manufacture which result in water pollution levels being higher than necessary. Correctly specified and installed biofilters create very healthy environments in which fish can live and grow to their full potential. In small ponds the filter can be installed directly in the pond. The pump connected to a biofilter must run 24 hours every day otherwise the bacteria will die from lack of oxygen contained in the circulating water. It is a good idea to have a waterfall and a fountain to increase the oxygen
