Undergraduate ASU students are invited to participate in an on-going gardening project at Gila River Indian Community. Interns go once a week to schools such as Veehij Himdag Mashchamaku Middle School (O'otham for "New Pathways to learning"), Casa Blanca Elementary and Blackwater. Interns work with the students of these schools to cultivate both the garden and the interest of the students in the value of agri/culture. The American Indian Studies and the Center for Urban Inquiry recruit and train service-learning students and coordinates the research and evaluation efforts; the Institute for Urban gardening provides the orientation and skill training for cooperative gardening and coordinate all on-site aspects of the projects; and the Gila River Indian Community personnel support and facilitate students involvement, and guide the cultural exchanges. A collaboration that uses gardening and creativity to foster a positive relationship among all

Use recommended varieties for your area of the state. Sample soil and have it tested every 2 to 3 years. Apply preplant fertilizer to garden area in recommended manner and amounts. Home gardening continues to grow in popularity. Although many urban gardeners have little choice, selecting a garden site is extremely important. Proper variety selection is an important key to successful gardening. Careful planning lessens gardening work and increases returns on labor. Proper fertilization is another important key to successful vegetable gardening. Diseases and insects cause great concern among Texas gardeners.

Gardens are fast becoming one of the last refuges for many butterfly species, as increasingly more of their natural habitat is lost through development and agricultural intensification. There are many ways you can tempt butterflies to visit your garden and in doing so help conserve their populations. To attract butterflies to your garden you will need to supply them with a source of nectar for energy and caterpillar food plants on which they can lay their eggs. Creating a butterfly border A wide range of native and cultivated plants can be grown in borders to provide nectar for adult butterflies. Table 1 contains a list of recommended plants along with their flowering time and soil preferences. Try to chose a range of plants that flower across the whole butterfly season (March - November). This ensures that nectar is available for both early and late flying species. For further information on gardening for butterflies and details of local suppliers please contact:
Bats are mammals like us. They are warm-blooded, give birth and suckle their young. They are highly intelligent and remarkable creatures but often much misunderstood. Over recent decades British bat populations have suffered huge declines as a result of habitat loss and human disturbance. Many of our native species have now reduced in numbers to such an extent that they are now considered endangered. Without efforts to protect them, some species could become extinct within decades. How many species are native to the British Isles? There are nearly 1,000 species of bats worldwide, representing almost a quarter of the world's total mammal population. Sixteen of these species are resident in the British Isles and 13 can be found in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA) is a project that would assist the Federal Government in addressing some of the issues expressed in the discussion paper Sustainable Cities 2025. SGA identifies the environmental impacts of gardening with regard to water usage, water quality, biodiversity, environmental weeds, green waste and purchase of non-renewable resources. SGA provides the home gardener with a system to easily adopt low environmental damage gardening practices. environmental impact of their internal practices and promotes sustainable gardening to their customers through the distribution of education material. Home gardeners have the opportunity to undertake workshops on practical solutions of how to garden more sustainably and professionals undergo formal training on issues of sustainable gardening to ensure creditable and consistent advice is being provided to customers. The home gardener receives the same message on sustainable gardening

As a result of a strong housing market boosted by low interest rates, this industry has seen tremendous growth. In 2002, $28.9 billion was spent in this industry and it continues to grow - partly attributed to the "do-it-for-me" mindset of the 77 million baby boomers who have more money than time. This industry is made up primarily of small businesses - 72% of which have 5 or fewer employees. A quarter of these businesses are located in California, Florida, New York and New Jersey.   B. Rosie Lerner and Michael N. Dana In these times of rising prices, more people than ever are returning to growing their own garden vegetables. And they are discovering or rediscovering that vegetables harvested from the garden at their peak of quality are more nutritious and tasty than those purchased in stores. Some would-be gardeners have no home garden space at all. Although space may limit the amount of veg-etables you can grow, you can stretch the space you do have with intensive gardening techniques. This publication will help you get your garden off to a good start and guide you to maximizing the rewards from your gardening efforts. Gather gardening materials early. In small plot gardening, it is advisable to plant only the amount needed. Mini Gardening.

"But it's too late to plant!" said my sister the other day when she asked for recommendations about what to plant around her house. "Don't I need to wait until fall?" These questions are frequently asked, indicating the widespread but incorrect belief that all plants must be in the ground by Memorial Day, or they won't survive. In fact, plants can be installed almost anytime that the soil isn't frozen. Better plant harvesting techniques and the culture of plants in containers have removed the barriers of planting in summer. When I told her this, she then asked another common question: "But won't I have to water it more often in the summer?" Such belief also creates a frequent complaint of gardeners: that they don't have enough color in their gardens after June. Gardeners usually choose plants that are in flower when they purchase them. As you can see, the flowering season needn't stop when the first day of summer arrives, nor should the gardening season.

the pleasure of creating and preserving For some people, banging in a nail, mending a floorboard or painting a wall are leisure activities for whenever they have a few moments to spare. For others, hammering and sawing are daily obligations if they are to keep a roof over their heads and a decent home. The former buy their "do-it-yourself" (DIY) supplies; the latter pick them up in the street or use what nature provides. When it comes to gardening, the disparity is the same: hoeing, planting and watering can be a pleasant hobby or a means to feed a family. In developed countries, arts and crafts are all the rage and gardening has become a popular and rewarding physical activity. However, recreational DIY and gardening pose problems from an environmental point of view, including wastefulness, water pollution, overexploitation of forests and waste treatment and disposal. For the past few years, green products, good practices and natural materials have meant that
