Search engines are powerful tools that index thousands of Web sites (through a computer program), and the indexes are updated almost continuously.

More than eight in ten American Internet users have gone to search engines to find information on the Web.

Using quotations marks around your search terms forces search engines to find adjacent words in a document.

Many Google users prefer not to have adult sites included in their image search results.

Whenever you search for more than one keyword at a time, a search engine has a default strategy when it comes to handling and combining those keywords.

Your Assignment: You are interested in researching the mating behaviors of pandas.
What are the keywords or phrases you would use to find articles about this topic?
Compare your results when you search using AND or OR in between your terms/phrases.
Are your results different if you search using keywords vs. phrases?
If yes, how can you find it?

There are currently two dominant interface types for searching and browsing large image collections: keywordbased search, and searching by overall similarity to sample images.
The interface makes use of hierarchical faceted metadata and dynamically generated query previews.
The endgame (Figure 3) shows a single selected item in the context of the current query.
All components of the interface are dynamically generated, based on the facets and facet values defined in a relational database.

The search tag section includes the <input> and the <interpret> information, but for the purpose of organizing this document you can find information on those parts in their own sections.
Often times the output will not display properly or at all in multi-search mode as the Table tags or fonts are misaligned or there is no start to the table on display.
Some sites may require the use of multiple interprets.
If you are using the "category" result type you will need at least one additional interpret tag section.

Central Library staff recommend Google because it offers sophisticated searching and retrieval choices.
When viewing your results click the 'thumbnail' image to see a slightly larger version of the image in the top frame.

By starting with these categories and then moving down through subcategories, you can narrow your search until you find the information you need.
If you already know exactly what you're looking for, a search engine is the best way to find it.
Search engines use keywords or phrases you choose to determine which web pages have relevant information.
Click through categories and subcategories until you find what you want.
Google looks simple, but searches more than a billion pages.
These snippets let you see the context in which your search terms appear on the page, so you can determine if the site is worth visiting.

Later, Lycos foundered, started selling its listings, and lost its edge to such newer engines as Infoseek and AltaVista (www.altavista.com/).
In 1998, they applied their paradigm through a new search engine called Google (www.google.com/).
When we are not having much luck right out of the gate, it's time to turn to the meta-search engines.
The city manager returned to her daughter's soccer field, and this time she wrote down the URL on the sign.
Sure enough, it pulled up the Web page that gave her the information she wanted.
I felt especially embarrassed because I, supposedly the searching expert, was unable to fulfill my city manager's simple request.

This information sheet describes how you can "surf the net" using the Internet Explorer browser which is available on the USCS PCs.
To start the browser, double click on its icon (shown right) which you will find this at the left side of the screen and on the short-cut toolbar that appears at the bottom of the screen.
The illustration below shows the initial page you will see when you start Internet Explorer on a Computing Service PC.

I returned filled with great ideas on how to improve the way flyte builds and markets Web sites and how we can help our clients reach a more targeted audience.
I use the word "invest" carefully; a Web site may be your best method of alerting people to your services.
First, consider what key phrases most accurately describe your site.
Directories, such as Yahoo and Looksmart, use human reviewers who make editorial decisions on whether to include your site in their directory.
Paid placement, or pay for placement (PFP), is when you pay to be included and ranked artificially higher than similar results in a given search.

Almost all web searches are carried out while the user is sitting at a conventional desktop computer, connected to the Internet.
Although online, handheld, mobile search offers new possibilities, the fast-paced style of interaction may not be appropriate for all user search needs.
The laid-back tool enables users to capture background information needs in situ over time.
The handheld application performs a check for duplicate entries and allows the complete set of queries to be viewed and edited.
The handheld, then, gives the user greater support for query noting than when they simply use paper and pen.
The laidback system, in contrast, is a "pull" technology, with the user directly requesting searches that arise in their everyday contexts.
