WASHINGTON -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today the Scioto Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue Dept., Jackson, Ohio will receive a $17,546 training grant in the second round of awards under the Assistance to Firefighters Program.
The department is among 81 fire departments across the United States that will receive more than $4.4 million in grants in the second round of awards.
According to the agency, more than $2.6 million of the funds are to be used for firefighting vehicles and $1.7 million for training purposes.

sowac_rbe_2002 USDA Rural Development State Director Lynn Schoessler announced the grant during a visit to the SOWAC office.
The grant will be used to fund the "Fast Track to Growing Your Small Business" program that is part of SOWAC's technical assistance to small rural businesses in Josephine and Jackson counties.

In 1996, Congress passed the Personal Responsibility, Work Opportunity and Reconciliation Act that created the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program (TANF).
Previously, families received federal welfare benefits as long as they met the eligibility criteria.
In New York City, 431,085 adults and children (162,359 families) were receiving TANF benefits as of March 2001.
In New York State, the first group of welfare recipients will reach the time limit in December 2001.
In fact, 42,010 families in New York City have already received TANF benefits for 52 cumulative months and it seems unlikely that they will find permanent employment before their benefits expire in December 2001.
