Halloween Indicator We document the existence of a new seasonal effect in stock returns based on the popular market wisdom 'Sell in May and go away', also known as the 'Halloween indicator'. This suggests that (summer) vacations, especially in Europe, have a surprisingly strong seasonal effect on stock returns in financial markets. In appendix A we compare (using a spanning test and the Merton and Henriksson test for market timing ability) the results of a trading strategy based on this simple market wisdom and compare these with a simple buy and hold strategy.
