Hepatitis B is swelling and tenderness of the liver which is
caused by the Hepatitis B virus.
When one of these fluids contacts mucous membranes (soft wet surfaces
of the body) or enters through breaks in the skin, the virus may be passed
to an uninfected person.
On average it takes between two and three months after the virus enters
the body for symptoms to begin.
There is no specific treatment for Hepatitis B infection.
However, it is important to have a doctor follow the course of the infection.
This protection is available through your private physician or the Oakland
County Health Division (OCHD).

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends immunizing infants
against Hepatitis B.
Hepatitis B Vaccine is a medicine given to babies to prevent hepatitis
or inflammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus.
The Hepatitis B Vaccine is given to help your baby's natural response
to prevent an infection caused by this virus.
Hepatitis B vaccine is given by injection.
one dose at age six - eighteen months If you are hepatitis B antigen positive,
your baby should receive the vaccine shortly after birth on day 1 of life,
and at one month and 6 months of age.
Upon request all patient education handouts are available in other formats
for people with hearing, vision and language problems.

LOS ANGELES (February 21, 2001) -- Researchers at Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center report that high amounts of Hepatitis C (HCV) in the blood
and simultaneous co-infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
may be linked to a greater risk of developing AIDS and AIDS related death.
"Our study shows that higher blood levels of HCV may have a detrimental
effect on HIV progression to fullblown AIDS," said Eric Daar, M.D.,
Director of Infectious Diseases and AIDS at the Cedars-Sinai Center for
Immune Disorders.
The patients were evaluated over a seven-year period, with CD4+ counts
(infection fighting cells), HIV and HCV blood levels measured on an annual
basis.

The Hepatitis C Virus Team is looking for an enthusiastic young
scientist to join us at the Cochin Institute in Paris.
Research in our laboratory focuses on the mechanisms underlying virus
particle formation, and aims at developing an urgently needed in vitro
infectivity assay.
Previous training in virology is preferred, but not essential.
Particularly valuable would be experience in any of the following: electron
microscopy, cell fractionation, or RNA work.
Position is available immediately, for up to 3 years, for a non-French
PhD. Competitive salary will be funded by INSERM, as part of its support
for our newly formed team.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is found in the stool of persons with
hepatitis A. HAV is usually spread from person to person by putting something
in the mouth that has been contaminated with the stool of a person with
hepatitis A. For this reason, the virus is more easily spread in areas
where there are poor sanitary conditions or where good personal hygiene
is not observed.
In the United States, hepatitis A can occur in situations ranging from
isolated cases of disease to widespread epidemics.
As immune globulin is in short supply, vaccine is preferred for travelers
2 years of age and older.

A safe and effective vaccine against HepB has been available
for nearly 20 years.
HepB vaccine is effective in preventing HBV infections when it is given
either before exposure or shortly after exposure.
WHO recommends that HepB vaccine be included in routine infant immunization
programmes in all countries.
The primary objective of routine infant HepB immunization is to prevent
the early childhood infections which result in chronic liver disease later
in life.
In order to prevent HBV transmission from mother to infant, the first
dose of HepB vaccine needs to be given as soon as possible after birth
(preferably within 24 hours).

This proforma is designed to record and prompt appropriate
discussion prior to Hepatitis C testing and to ensure fully informed consent
is obtained before testing.
Antibodies can develop up to 6 months after exposure - negative test may
need to be repeated.
Natural history and disease progression variable and related to impact
of treatment.
Harm Reduction strategies to:reduce or stop sharing injecting equipment
(including swabs, filters and water) keep alcohol intake below recommended
limits (21 units p/w for men, 14 for women) Life insurance and mortgage
issues -- see accompanying sheet.
HCV test is for antibodies only: Positive test indicates that there has
been infection at some time.
