http://www.mentors.ca/peston.pdf It is a joint project between Wentworth Area Health Service
ual Health promotion Unit, Public Health Unit and Drug and Alcohol
Services.
The intervention was developed in response to the younger than average
age of hepatitis C transmission in Wentworth Area Health Service, compared
to both NSW and Australian statistics.
In planning the project, we had to consider the following issues: We had
to find ways of accessing networks of young people, establishing trust,
worker credibility and rapport to engage them in HCV education.
Put simply, this model functions like pyramid selling by engaging participants
to recruit and educate peers for nominal incentive rewards.

Hands should be washed thoroughly in soap and warm, running
water for at least 10 seconds then dried.
Children under the age of 5 years who become infected with the virus usually
have no symptoms at all or mild gastrointestinal symptoms.
Infection with one type of hepatitis does not give any protection against
the other types of hepatitis.
DO NOT share linen and towels with other people.
If there is a person with hepatitis A in your household then you should:-WASH
YOUR HANDS thoroughly in soap and warm, running water: BEFORE preparing
food and drinks; and AFTER handling objects and materials such as nappies
and condoms.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important cause of
chronic liver disease and the most common chronic bloodborne infection
in the United States. The chronic phase is typically asymptomatic and can
progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, or hepatocellular carcinoma.
Common modes of transmission include injection and intranasal drug use,
blood transfusions, high-risk ual behavior, nosocomial exposure, and
maternal--fetal transmission.
Testing for HCV is recommended for illicit drug users, people who received
blood transfusions prior to 1992, people on long-term dialysis, health
care workers exposed to infected blood, and infants born to HCV-infected
mothers.Treatment includes interferon, with or without ribavirin combination
therapy.
In hemodialysis settings, efforts must be made to educate staff about
infection control practices that prevent transmission of HCV and other
bloodborne pathogens.
Hepatitis C virus is a major public health problem with an extremely high
rate of chronicity.

To get a closer look at an individual virion, click on it and hold the
mouse button down.
To see a virion's nucleotide sequence, click on it and hold the mouse
button down.
We are now ready to think about how we might use nucleotide sequences
to reconstruct evolutionary history, and to determine whether a particular
doctor infected a particular patient.
These lines show the evolutionary tree, or phylogeny, for the populations
of virions.
This box shows the population of virus particles in the first patient.
To infect the second patient, drag one or more virions into another box.

http://www.microbiology.wustl.edu/training/courses/molvir/pdf/hsiehsy99.pdf Recently, we found that more than 10% of the cases of acute
non-A, non-B, non-C hepatitis in Taiwan were caused by a novel strain
of hepatitis E virus (HEV).
The recent discovery of a swine HEV in herd pigs in the United States
has led us to speculate that HEV may also circulate in herd pigs in Taiwan
and may serve as a reservoir for HEV in Taiwan.
Clearly, the two swine strains of HEV isolated in different geographic
regions were genetically distinct.
The nucleotide sequences of the Taiwan swine and human isolates of HEV
were 97.3% identical to each other, while they shared only about 70% nucleotide
sequence identities with HEV strains isolated from China, Pakistan, India,
Nepal, Burma, Egypt, and Chad.

I have had prior education about hepatitis B, the risk of exposure
to health care workers and the hepatitis B vaccine.
I hereby state that as of this date, I have never been diagnosed as having
AIDS or any AIDS related complex, immunodeficiency disorder or positive
HIV blood test.
Further, I understand and realize that I may accept jobs/shifts through
O.R. Nurses, Inc. at hospitals or other health care facilities wherein
patients may be diagnosed or afflicted with AIDS or an AIDS related disorder
which they may or may not know about.
I hereby release and discharge O.R. Nurses, Inc. from any and all liability,
responsibility, damages or loss, whether known or unknown, existing or
potential, which I may ever claim as a result of any contact or consequence
which may ever arise as a result of my association with my association
with patients with said disorder.

The model was used to determine long-term morbidity, life expectancy,
and lifetime costs for different treatment strategies using the societal
perspective.
RESULTS: International clinical studies indicate that combination therapy
with pegylated interferon and ribavirin (PCOM) achieves highest SVR (54-61%),
followed by standard combination therapy with interferon and ribavirin
(SCOM) with 37-54%, and interferon monotherapy (MONO) with 11-21%.
Based on international cost-effectiveness studies, SCOM is "cost-effective"
compared to MONO.
CONCLUSIONS: This HTA suggests that initial combination therapy should
prolong life, improve quality-adjusted life expectancy, and be cost-effective
in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
The combination of pegylated interferon and ribavirin is currently the
most effective and efficient antiviral treatment for CHC.

I understand that due to my occupational exposure to blood
or other potentially infectious materials, I may be at risk of acquiring
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
I have been given the opportunity to be vaccinated with Hepatitis B vaccine
at no charge to myself.
I understand that by declining this vaccine, I continue to be at risk
of acquiring Hepatitis B, a serious disease.
If, in the future I continue to have occupational exposure to blood or
other potentially infectious materials and I want to be vaccinated with
Hepatitis B vaccine, I can receive the vaccination series at no charge
to me.
interferon_alfa_hepatitis_C
Treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection with interferon
alfa (3 MU three times a week for six months) leads to improvement in
markers of liver function in 40-50% of patients, but after stopping therapy
the response is sustained in only 20-25%.
There is, as yet, no direct evidence that treatment of patients with mild
disease prevents the development of cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma,
although limited data indicate that treatment with interferon alfa reduces
the risk of liver cancer in patients with established cirrhosis.
In the meantime prescribing policies should reflect the strength of current
evidence, i.e., interferon alfa should be reserved for patients with chronic
active hepatitis or cirrhosis.

http://www.healthspace.ca/ After the hepatitis virus enters your body, it can take from
15 to 50 days before you feel sick.
People who go to the bathroom and then don't wash their hands properly
can pass the virus to others through food preparation or other hand/mouth
contacts.
If you have had close contact with someone who has hepatitis A, a shot
called "Immune Globulin" can prevent you from getting sick.
Immune globulin is provided free in these cases, and can be given by the
public health nurse or your family doctor.
NOTE: Pregnant women should discuss vaccination with their public health
nurse or family doctor before getting vaccinated.

http://www.rx-press.com/pdf/hepatitisc.pdf This article reviews and discusses the state-of-the-art tests
and assays used in the diagnosis and management of hepatitis C virus (HCV)
infection.
Screening tests for the presence of HCV and confirmatory tests are discussed
and put into clinical perspective.
Analytic sensitivity is estimated according to the smallest amount of
HCV RNA detected and reliably quantified.
Consequently, within any given individual, HCV exists as a heterogeneous
mixture of closely related viruses called quasispecies.
A high frequency of mixed cryoglobulinemia (types II and III) is seen
in patients with chronic HCV infection.
The genetic, geographical and etiological variations in the hepatitis
C virus are observable via genotyping, allowing for more exact diagnoses.
hepc_update
http://www.mchealth.org/pha/teams2002/hepc_update.pdf The MCHD Viral Hepatitis C Integration Program (VHIP) is dedicated
to building capacity within MCHD and in the community around issues related
to Hepatitis C.
This will be achieved by integrating services with existing MCHD programs
and creating linkages with community services and resources.
It is not the Health Department's intent to become the primary direct
care provider for Hepatitis C+ clients in the County, but rather to provide
support to the efforts already being undertaken in the areas of prevention,
care, social service support, and education/training.
The two departments that began working immediately with Hep C issues (in
December 1999) were the HIV Prevention and Outreach program and the STD
Clinic.
