Echinacea http://www.nres.uiuc.edu/outreach/pubs/hfs/Echinacea.pdf The International Herb Association (IHA) initiated the Herb of the Year (HOY) promotion in 1995, to generate interest and publicity for its member businesses. This coming year offers a unique opportunity because this is the first time an herb, which is known primarily as a medicinal herb, has been chosen. Since Echinacea is also a valuable decorative and landscape plant, when used as both fresh or dried cut flowers or as a landscape perennial, it clearly satisfies the selection criteria. While all species of Echinacea could be used as an ingredient in culinary dishes, there would be no major flavor or color enhancement made by this addition, with the exception of petals tossed into a salad. Castello Accommodations and Following are descriptions of the Villa, the Fattoria, and the other Castello facilities available for program group use, and information about meals and services. It's wise to devote one side of the garden to perennials and biennels and the other side to annuals, which need to be replaced each year. Thyme, winter savory, dwarf catnip, and many silver leaved plants such as woolly lamb's ears, mulleins, some yarrows and artemisia prefer a drier sandier soil. Appearance: Grows to 18 inches (46 cm), with fuzzy, grey-green leaves and vibrant purple flowers. History: The name derives from the Arabic abu buraq (father of sweat) due to the plant's diaphoretic qualities. Medicinal qualities/uses: The seeds form the basis of laxatives such as Metamucil, and can be ground and mixed with water or fruit juice at home to relieve constipation. History: Achilles is said to have dressed the wounds of his soldiers with the herb. agi04509 Herbs are plants grown for the special flavor and aroma of their various parts. Since only a small portion of the plant is usually needed at any one time and because the plants are generally small, herbs adapt well to container culture. Most of the annuals and biennials are ordinarily grown from seed sown directly in place. Perennials generally are best started in plant beds or boxes using seed or cuttings, and then transplanted into the garden or growing containers. Seed and planting stock of the savory herbs can be obtained from a number of established herb gardens and seedsmen, as well as from many vegetable seed mail order firms in various parts of the country.
