Write about your discoveries in the form of a persuasive article for an infl uential community newspaper. Since its founding in 1996, the prize has encour-aged undergraduate architecture students to write about issues central to the understanding of the social art of archi-tecture and the social role of the architect in today's world. By asking stu-dents to grapple with just such problems, the Prize brings to the forefront of students' thinking the reality that archi-tecture is a social art. Nevertheless, the quality of student essays refl ects a

Ceylon, as the country formerly was called, was the original home of the tree from which cinnamon is obtained. This article draws on a few tidbits taken from this extensive compilation of spice history, uses, and lore. To put the spice trade into perspective, think about crude oil in the Persian Gulf. Globalization is not a new force in the economy or politics of the world. Some folks lump herbs into the spice category, but herbs are actually the green parts of plants, and are grown in temperate climates. Spices have been around for eons on the islands

Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas revealed details today about the Valley's latest interception of a drug shipment containing the latest, highly potent form of marijuana from Canada. The drug bust led to the indictment late last week of a 51-year-old Canadian man who was arrested in Paradise Valley on April 20th with five bales of the powerful marijuana worth approximately $250,000. Called "B.C. Bud" after the plant's origin in the Canadian province of British Columbia, the drug is grown not in soil but indoors in a special hydroponic solution and carefully cultivated to increase THC content, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. While today's ordinary marijuana contains two to six percent THC, the hydroponic version can contain up to 25 percent. B.C. Bud can be distinguished from ordinary marijuana by its reddish stems. "This is a dangerous variation of the drug most likely to open the door to substance abuse and personal destruction," said Andrew Thomas.

Heterocyclic 1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-ones (HX), which belong to the unique class of benzoxazinones, are major components in plant chemical defense in grasses, and they are also believed to be part of an allelochemical system involved in the interference with other plants via root exudation. Triticum L. spp. and Secale cereale L. release HX via root exudation, but a causal involvement of HX in allelopathic trait expression at natural release rates is still to be verified. The objective of this study was to evaluate the significance of a HX-mediated allelopathic potential of root exudates. A biological screening assessed the variation in phenotypic allelopathic activity in 146 cultivars of four HX-producing grass species (T. aestivum L., T. durum Desf., T. spelta L., S. cereale). The bioassay was conducted on a plant-by-plant basis under laboratory conditions as a dose-response assay in hydroponic culture with Sinapis alba L. as a receiver species. A simultaneous chemical

Successful hydroponic cultivation involves the use of various aggressive liquid chemicals. Some of these liquids are very dangerous indeed and require very careful handling. 3. ALWAYS ensure that a good supply of fresh water is close to hand in case of accident. Growth Technology pH DOWN contains orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) at 81%. The concentration is very strong so handle with care. This is a very dense liquid and should feel much heavier than water. Growth Technology pH UP contains potassium hydroxide (KOH) at 50%. This is a very caustic liquid and should be handled with extreme care. Growth Technology LIQUID OXYGEN contains hydrogen peroxide (H202) at 17.5%.

After 3 months of working after hours and weekends we have finished refitting the SAAB Sports Sedan with the 9.3 Aero body shell and panels. During the refitting process, we managed to `Jenny Craig' the car by 130 Kg's and remount the fuel tank, pumps, exhaust, battery, etc to get optimum weight distribution. Whilst we had the car apart, the rear suspension was redesigned to incorporate an adjustable watts linkage, the roll cage was modified to add extra torsional rigidity and the rear wing and mounting brackets were also reconditioned and refitted. All in all it's been a very exciting process and our love for SAAB's (particularly the V8 ones) has been further enhanced with this brilliant new look. Make sure to pop in and have a look for yourself.   In future long term space flights and on planetary outposts, there will be a need to process hydroponically and zeoponically grown foods for human consumption (Bourland 2003, Perchonok 2003). By designing a blender that will work in both microgravity and 1-g, it will likely work in the gravitational conditions found on lunar or Mars outposts. The purpose of this experiment is to test the function of a specially designed blender in a microgravity environment. The objective of this research is to explore the effects of microgravity on blending and food processing through the use of an innovative blending technique. The device will blend soybeans in microgravity over a varied number of passes under a blending wheel during flight. Data collected from this experiment should provide information about the effects of gravity on the dynamics of the transformation of solid particles (soybeans) to a slurry mash (blended soybeans) and basic food processing techniques. Microgravity

Professional growers have been using Oasis foam products for years and now you can enjoy the same reliable results from this remarkable product. Rootcubes are designed for starting seeds of plants that will later be transplanted to either soil or a soilless medium. Completely pH neutral, Rootcubes incorporate a two-week supply of starter fertilizer right in the cube. All you have to do is saturate them with water (they hold 40 times their weight), drop your seed in the prepunched holes, keep them moist and wait for ger-mination. When seedlings are of transplant size, simply cut the individual cubes with a knife and trans-plant into your medium. Spray-N-Grow is not a fertilizer, hormone or hydroponic nutrient solution. Spray-N-Grow provides your plants with essential minor elements (micronutrients) usually not contained in your hydroponic nutrient solution. - Improves the performance of hydroponic nutrient solu-tion and fertilizer It is a highly effective supplement

This protocol describes the extraction of total RNA from plant tissue samples using TRIzol ® reagent. The procedure is used by the Arabidopsis Microarray project in the Mammalian Genomics Department. This modified protocol is preferable for plants samples grown in soil or hydroponic media, which tend to have higher secondary metabolites compared to liquid culture-grown plants; for extraction of total RNA that can be directly used in hybridizations (instead of mRNA); or for samples rich in protein content such as green siliques. 3. MATERIALS 4.1 Perform all work under a chemical fume hood. Remove as much liquid as possible from all disposables (pipette tips, tubes, etc.) that come into contact with TRIzol® and chloroform, and place disposables in containers designated for solid hazardous waste trash. When containers are full, contact the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for proper removal and disposal. 5.3.1 Clean with soap and rinse with deionized water and 100%

RESEARCH REPORT

The size of the greenhouse vegetable industry in Florida in 1996 was 57 acres (Hochmuth and Hochmuth, 1996b). Traditionally the Florida greenhouse vegetable industry has consisted of crops of cucumber, tomato, and lettuce. More recently, other crops have become more important, including colored pepper, herbs, especially leafy green vegetables, and strawberry. Cluster tomato is also another example of further specialization within the tomato market. Cluster tomato production in greenhouses worldwide has become very popular in the last three years (Hochmuth, et. al., 1997). This trial was conducted to continue cultivar evaluations of new and standard cluster tomatoes in greenhouse hydroponic culture in North Florida. Materials and Methods This trial was conducted a the Suwannee Valley Research and Education Center, University of Florida, near Live Oak, Florida in a single 22' x 60' stand-alone greenhouse with 8' sidewalls. The structure was covered with two layers of 6 mil
