Following the National and State Conventions last year, the Darling Downs Region has been actively welcoming new and prospective members to our group. The committee organized a coffee afternoon and a fireside chat last year, where we welcomed guests. These were most successful functions, the like of which we plan to repeat at least twice each year. They provided opportunities to further the goals of the College. It has also been our aim to include members in outlying areas where members find difficulty attending meetings and functions. With this in mind, last year we organized a visit to the School of Total Education, in Warwick, and a visit to the Oakey State School, both of which were most interesting and stimulating meetings. Our Awards for Excellence in Education dinner last year, was again a resounding success. Our Guest Speaker was Mr Paul Mc Nally OBE, who spoke of the history of education in the Toowoomba region over the last one hundred years. It was an evening of

Rice Husk Ash Cement

However, to make a strong mortar, some additional calcium oxide (quick-lime) or Portland cement will be required. Husk is obtained as a by-product of threshing padi. In fact, about 20% of the dry mass of harvested padi is husk. Of this residue, somewhere between 17% and 23% by weight is left as ash when the husk is burned. The ash is about 95% pure silica, and, if properly prepared, it is in an active form1 which behaves very like cement. The main problem in producing active silica from rice-husks is to burn them at a temperature below about 800°C to stop the silica forming inactive crystals. But it is also necessary to burn them for long enough so that all the cellulose burns away and leaves a white or grey-coloured ash. The use of a simple basket-burner ensures that these conditions will occur. It has been shown to be biologically inactive and to make an excellent hydroponic matrix in which disease-free plants can be raised and seeds germinated.

SELECTING AN AREA TO SAMPLE Samples must be collected within the one soil type and slope and have similar paddock history. Avoid recently fertilised areas, manure and urine patches, old fence lines, old animal pens, old building sites, gullies and other areas that are not typical of the field being sampled. SOIL SAMPLING Collect sub-samples from 15-20 sites, within 8 hectares or less, to a depth of 15 cm with a soil probe or auger. If these tools are not available, accurate samples can be taken with a spade, as follows: Ensure the sampling tool is rust free, cleaned and gloves are worn to remove anything that could contaminate the soil sample. Dig a hole to 15 cm deep, then take a slice of soil from top to bottom. Remove a uniform section about 3-4 cm wide from the top to the bottom of the slice. It is very important to sample uniformly down the soil profile.

FROM THE CHURCH OFFICE ALL meetings and room use must be pre-scheduled with Jane in the church office. Church Office Closures On the first Easter morning, three women go to the tomb where Jesus is buried. As they approach his grave, they ask each other, "Who will roll the stone away?" (Mark 16:1-8) It's an intriguing question suggesting that the first act of the Easter drama is the opening of the grave. The women's question can also be ours. Who will roll the stone away from the crucifixion that characterizes our world and even our own lives? Who will roll the stone away from the death and decay that have us trapped?

The Party believes that in free and democratic societies such as Canada, the individual should be provided the maximum possible freedom. No one should be persecuted or marginalized because of their chosen lifestyle, so long as they don't demonstrably harm other people or their property. SUPPORT THE BCMP Prohibition is a harmful and failed social tragedy that must be repealed. Almost half the Canadian population has smoked cannabis. Under our laws, they are all criminals. 600,000 of our neighbors, friends and family have had their lives negatively impacted because of a criminal conviction for cannabis possession. Meanwhile, prohibition has created a vast black-market, which causes violence, endangers our communities and imperils our loved ones. And prohibition has failed to reduce either supply or demand.

Using cultivation, immuno¯uorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, we demonstrated the presence of viable enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 not only on the outer surfaces but also in the inner tissues and stomata of cotyledons of radish sprouts grown from seeds experimentally contaminated with the bacterium. HgCl 2 treatment of the outer surface of the hypocotyl did not kill the contaminating bacteria, which emphasized the importance of either using seeds free from E. coli O157:H7 in the production of radish sprouts or heating the sprouts before they are eaten. Hydroponically grown radish ( Raphanus sativus) sprouts were suspected to be the vehicle of a large outbreak of Esch-erichia coli O157:H7 infections in Sakai City, Japan, in 1996 (8) and in small outbreaks in Yokohama and Gamagori City, Ja-pan, in 1997. To determine whether radish sprouts could serve as a vehicle for transmission of human-pathogenic microorgan-isms, we investigated the

All of Earth's resources have been deminished. A group of biologists have conferred with others on Earth about establishing a permanent manned colony in orbit around Jupiter and BioZone is the result of their efforts. Construction of BioZone began on Earth with the establishment of a panel of scientists and engineers. Embryos from many Earth species were collected, frozen and shipped to outposts near Mars for later transport to BioZone when the time arose. Physical construction of the first BioZone Module was completed in the middle of the 23rd century and became operational in the year 2265. Now, in 2300, BioZone is quite viable and is a productive partner with the colonies of Alpha-Omega. BioZone is a scientific colony to perform research, preserve endangered animal species, and grow food for the Alpha-Omega colonies. Third largest satellite in the solar system.   Allegheny Land Trust Roy Kraynyk has been involved with the land one way or another for most of his life. "I grew up on six acres," explains Kraynyk, "so I was always outdoors--camping, horseback riding, sledding in the winter." After working as an estate caretaker and a real estate agent, in 1988 Kraynyk earned a Bachelor's with Honors in Landscape Architecture from Penn State. With each position, he was pulled closer to conservation-oriented projects. He served on the county's Agriculture Preservation Board, the Strategic Parks Planning Initiative, and the DEP Citizen Volunteer Water Monitoring Panel. The test of his commitment to land preservation, however, came in what he did with his free time. In 1990, he founded the Hollow Oak Land Trust (HOLT). Ideas include refurbishing the clubhouse for a new Trust office, establishing a canoe launch, using the former swimming pool as a hydroponic community garden, and turning the bathhouse drainage (AMD) mitigation project.

  1. To what extent do you support preserving a "significant portion" of the Roger Curtis lands as parkland and natural area? If you are supportive of this position, please provide your a) interpretation on what constitutes a "significant portion". Obviously, in such a large, uniquely positioned property there are going to be several areas of concern, not all of them conveniently grouped. Beach access, and recreational uses have been the recent traditional uses so far and as such people have come to appreciate the wonderful area that is Cape Roger Curtis. Environmental protection has also become a huge issue, not just here but country wide, with the expertise improving daily. As I am certainly not an environmental scientist, I would need to carefully listen to the concerns and advise offered by those who have such skills. As the Cape Roger Curtis lands are private property all aspects of its future are subject to negotiation between the owners and the public. As a Councillor
>   The APVMA has initiated its reconsideration of the approvals of the active constituent procymidone, the registrations of products containing procymidone and the approvals of associated labels. This document defines the scope of the matters of concern to the APVMA and outlines the kinds of information the APVMA requires to conduct a comprehensive scientific assessment of procymidone. Procymidone is a fungicide used widely in horticulture as both a pre- and post-harvest chemical as well as for use in turf, ornamentals and pulse crops. The APVMA will also consider whether product labels carry adequate instructions and warning statements. A decision on the reconsideration will be made after the APVMA has reviewed all the data and other information provided to it for this purpose. The public is invited to make submissions to the APVMA regarding any of the matters raised in the scope document (see Section 9). It is widely used in horticulture either as a seed dressing, pre-harvest
