30370 NIAA Poultry Report.qxd

Recurring cases of low patho-genicity avian influenza (LPAI) in the live bird marketing (LBM) sys-tem and commercial industry over the past 10 years has resulted in the development of a program to pre-vent and control the presence of this virus throughout all levels of the poultry industry. While the program is voluntary to each state, APHIS hopes that the incentives are strong enough that all states having businesses within the scope of the live bird marketing sys-tem will participate in the program. The program also pro-vides indemnification for losses resulting form LPAI for facilities that are in compliance with the pro-gram requirements, as identified in the program's Uniform Standards. Administration and enforce-ment will come from the state level. States must have requirements for licensing or registration of all busi-nesses within the live bird market system. There must be biosecurity protocols in place in these facilities and employees must have received biosecurity

Parallel experiments are reported for PS II membranes with 5% methanol, treated with ammonia, and following short and long term dark adaptation. In each case, the temperature dependence of the electron spin-lattice relaxation rate is consistent with Orbach relaxation, and the range of excited state energies is relatively narrow (33.8 cm 1 1 39.7 cm 1). In addition, short term dark adapted (6 min, `active state') PS II membranes show biphasic recovery traces which indicate that a minority fraction of the oxygen evolving complexes are trapped in a form with greatly slowed spin-lattice relaxation. Molecular oxygen is released following the formation of the final S4 state. The S2 state is paramagnetic and gives rise to Mn EPR signals in the g =4andg = 2 regions of the spectrum. The energy of this excited state manifold was determined to be 36.5 cm 1 above the ground state. However, ex-cited spin state manifolds at relatively low energy are consistent with a higher nuclearity Mn

Application for licence for intentional release of GMOs into the environment: Application No DIR 060/2005

The Act, supported by the Gene Technology Regulations 2001, an inter-governmental agreement and corresponding legislation that is being enacted in each State and Territory, underpins Australia's nationally consistent regulatory system for gene technology. Its objective is to protect the health and safety of people, and the environment, by identifying risks posed by or as a result of gene technology, and managing those risks by regulating certain dealings with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Act establishes a statutory officer, the Gene Technology Regulator (the Regulator), to administer the legislation and make decisions under the legislation. The Regulator is supported by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR), an Australian Government regulatory agency located within the Health and Ageing portfolio. The legislation sets out the requirements for considering applications for licences for dealings with GMOs and the matters that the Regulator must take

Rick Enos indicated that staff initiates administrative rezonings in circumstances like this one, where the current zoning is inconsistent with the Comprehensive Plan. She said that most of her neighbors have horses, and the area is mostly zoned RR-1. He said that when the horse was previously on this property, he couldn't open any windows in his house due to the dirt and smell. He added that he took his finger and wrote the word "dirt" on it, so the Board could see how much dirt blew onto it in only six days. He showed the Board members a picture of the horse from his rear window, and it also shows the horse stall from his back porch. Ron McLellan asked the speaker if he lives directly to the west of the subject property. She said that she is very surprised to see him here today, because he never said anything to her in the past. He said that he would bet that this dust and dirt situation will improve tremendously when those subdivisions are finished. He said that

It was a reunion of long time friends relaxing together, enjoying old memories and making new ones. Eric Flourié, a Mexican native of French descent, was a chemistry student at SDSU in the late fifties and early sixties. His sister preceded him and was in my chemistry laboratory section in the mid fifties, and I became a friend of the Flourié family over the years. John Low was a fraternity brother of Eric (aka Kiki) during the early sixties and they have maintained their friendship and are neighbors now. Those who have followed my travels will not be surprised to know that our first important stop was for brunch along the old road to Rosarito. Eric surely knows how to pick eateries and is experienced enough to know that tacos must be ordered one at a time, so they are always absolutely fresh and hot. We took a detour north to visit the lots that Eric and his sister have purchased on a hill looking out over the Pacific and the Coronado Islands. The coast was still overcast

1982) conducted several decades ago clearly showed contam-inants exist in urban runoff and more recent research shows that constructed wetlands can lower the concentration of un-wanted compounds in stormwater runoff (Stockdale 1991, Wu 1995, Watanabe 1997). Although wetlands constructed to treat stormwater runoff are increasingly-used to help meet environmental goals, the understanding of this application lags behind the understanding of wastewater treatment. As stormwater applications increase, the need to under-stand internal wetland processes and the management op-tions becomes proportionally more important. Studies are underway in our laboratory to gain a more thorough under-standing of selected operating processes within a constructed stormwater wetland. Early experiments in our lab failed to produce desired vigorous plant growth within the test wetland cells, although the selected water depths were well within the established ranges for the mature species (Woodland

Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp

Carmine Appice has attended past fantasy camps, and who wouldn't want the legendary Carmine in their band?? I wish I'd thought of it first! I arrived about 2pm in the pouring rain, and the first thing I did was grab an ice cream bar from Archie's ice cream truck. I haven't eaten ice cream in the pouring rain lately, and discovered I wasn't the only one doing this. Looking around, the first familiar face I saw was Andrea, the bass player from ThundHerstruck, who was kind enough to get me a Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp t-shir t, Thanks Andrea!! I ventured into the studio, and saw Jack Blades, the camp director, who was very busy keeping tabs on all the bands. Jane Weidlin soon arrived, what a cutie she is! She is very petite, and she just glows. She jumped in the ice cream truck for a quick interview to be broadcast on VH-1 in the near future.

In this paper we will discuss a two-product approach for the safe and efficient handling of petroleum product spills in the workplace and on our waterways. We will introduce the concept of BIOREMEDIATION as an economically viable, environmentally sound solution to the problems cause by petroleum and petro-chemical handling. The concept of aggressive absorption as a prime solution to marine spill incidents will be discussed. We will review two products that out-perform materials currently used today in terms of absorption capacity, safe disposal, storage density and cost. Case studies and supporting test data will be provided. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce new tools in spill responses and we will present two efficient marine absorbents specifically designed to counteract the negative impact of petroleum products in our waterways. All products are handled in bulk marine quantities. SRI is a bulk ocean terminal operator for petro-chemicals. SRI has gained a
