Based on archaeological evidence, by 1200 B.C. they had disappeared from the Island, but had survived longer in Labrador. Historical and archeological evidence indicates that the Bethouks were already living in Newfoundland at the time that Viking explorers arrived. They numbered less than a thousand people at the time of European contact in the 15th century. Historical evidence suggests that the Mi'kmaq were living in Newfoundland by the 16th century. Historical and archaeological suggests that the Innu were visiting coastal Labrador from the Quebec-Labrador interior by the 16th century. The Western Charter stated that the fi rst fi shing captain of a vessel in Newfoundland would be the admiral for the season with responsibility for deciding disputes among themselves and protecting their

DISC1-DIS14

ynthia Meeusen's future career path may have been inspired by a Walt Disney documentary on the Land Pavilion that she saw when she was 12 years old. She observed how Disney grew some of the plants and, after watching the documentary, she went into her mom's kitchen, pulled everything off the table, and proceeded to make her own pavilion. It was her "laboratory" for the entire summer, much to her mother's chagrin. Meeusen was always interested in science and math and decided to pursue engineering at Michigan State University. She wasn't sure what specific field of engineering to go into until she had the opportunity to take a biosystems class. The professor of that class was ASAE member Evangelyn Alocilja. "It was encouraging to me to see a woman teaching the class. "We have aeroponic and hydroponic plants, roots hanging out in the air, flying squash.

Photobioreactors are used to grow photosynthetic cell cultures. Many factors influence the growth of cell cultures such as light, carbon dioxide, and nutrients. To design a photobioreactor (PBR) an understanding of the light requirements for microalgae is necessary. It is known that photosynthetic microalgae need light, but the intensity and length of exposure for optimal biomass production is not known. Efficient PBR design requires that light be provided at the required intensities, duration and wavelength based on pigments present in the microalgae. An excessive intensity may lead to photoinhibition and photooxidation while low intensities may not promote algal growth. Long exposure to light may lead to minor damage of algal collection antenna that can be quickly repaired by the cell if placed in the dark. Photosynthesis is a process that takes time and once the process is initiated, additional photon energy collected will be lost as thermal energy. Photons that are

This will be a standing meeting day - the 3rd Thursday of the month - and time - 11 a.m. for the Pawnshop Subcommittee We will, however, be taking a hiatus in July and August, due to the many summer vacations that are scheduled during these months. The Rap Sheet will continue to be published and distributed monthly throughout the summer. Subcommittees should continue to meet and work, as necessary, to resolve pending tasks. Issues for consideration by the PPCC may be submitted to any member of the steering committee at any time. After June 19th, our next scheduled meeting will be on September 18th, when we will discuss new and amended laws enacted during the recent legislative session. When an A-form does not set forth probable cause, two issues arise. The first involves the difficulty of getting the officer in for a probable cause hearing on very short notice (less than 24 hours). Unit, raised the issue of evidence storage, particularly of hydroponic plants.

Hood_Phytopathology_1998_Striga_NonHost

Initial interactions of Striga asiatica with a susceptible host and non-host plants were examined by histological methods. Haustorial develop-ment was initiated when radicles of S. asiatica were placed in contact with host or nonhost roots. Reorganization of the S. asiatica root apical meristem was rapid and involved the formation of a distal group of cells that penetrated the host or nonhost root. The possible sources and mechanisms of host resistance to parasitism by Striga spp. were recently reviewed by Ejeta and Butler (7). Among the various resistance mechanisms operating in hosts of S. asiatica, low production of germination stimulants affecting S. asiatica and direct inhibition of infection processes by the development of chemical or physical barriers appear to be most important. While penetration of host cultivars by S. asiatica has been described (6,16), the nature of interactions between'Striga and nonhosts and the possible basis for nonhost resistance are not well

PICKLE (PKL) is a CHD3 chromatin-remodeling factor that is necessary for the repression of embryonic traits in germinating seedlings. For example, in Arabidopsis, the primary roots of pkl seedlings remain swollen and green (like pickles) after germination and thus, remain "fixed" in an embryonic state of development. The application of gibberellin (GA) to pkl seedlings re-presses the embryonic state, whereas decreasing the level of GA in germinat-ing seeds increases the penetrance of the pickle root phenotype. The adult shoot phenotype of pkl plants is also reminiscent of a plant defective in GA response: pkl plants are dark green, dwarfed, and require a longer time to flower. These phenotypes suggest that PKL itself may play a role in mediating GA-dependent responses. char-acterize the ability of PKL and GA to repress embryonic traits, and they re-examine the role of PKL in mediating GA-dependent responses. They report that PKL is expressed throughout the seedling

CH3-118 Future Kitchens

Nook comeback Melbourne-based company, SmartSystems, a specialist commercial and domestic automation company and CEDIA member, recommends its clients planning a new look allow for a small area off the kitchen that houses a computer, bench space and storage cupboards. "We're calling it a kitchen nook," says Michael Staindl. "Clients who have seen our design of the area are very impressed and most want one incorporated into their new homes." Michael says the kitchen is still the area of the home where most of the family bills congregate and are `dealt with' at a later stage. "It makes great sense to have a connection point installed for a computer, perhaps one with a flat screen and wipeable keyboard, in a semi-private area just off the main kitchen. I know the people we have spoken to seem very enthusiastic about the kitchen nook." Lars Erikson, chief designer at Electrolux Home Products (Australia's major appliance manufacturer), says there is still debate about where the

This paper examines the participation of developing country growers in Supermarket Market channels in the context of two research questions: What are the determinants of grower participation in Supermarket Markets versus other market channels? What are the impacts of participation in Supermarket Markets on growers' production and marketing decisions? The paper draws on a survey of 32 lettuce growers in São Paulo Brazil, using cluster analysis and comparison of means to test hypotheses. It is shown that growers participating in Supermarket Channels are larger, better educated in agriculture, produce a larger variety of vegetables and produce more high-value vegetable products than their counterparts in the Traditional Market channels. They also use more advanced technology and have slightly better access to credit than Traditional Market Channel growers. Neither Supermarket nor Traditional Market Channel growers have made significant changes to their

Planning Guidelines - Conservation of Koalas in the Koala Coast

The Guidelines will be reviewed in association with the review of the Policy, which is to occur within five years of gazettal. Such impacts should be minimised, either by site-responsive design (reinforced by planning scheme requirements and planning conditions), or by local governments negotiating changes to proposed uses with development proponents (see paragraph 6.10 of the Policy). The size of the population, large area of relatively undisturbed habitat and high density of food and shelter trees make this one of Australia's most significant koala conservation areas. Since then, koala populations have recovered naturally over a number of decades. Some sick or injured koalas taken from the Koala Coast and rehabilitated have been released in the area over the last 30-40 years. There are no known records of the natural koala population being artificially boosted by major releases of koalas originating outside the Koala Coast. The current koala population for the area

Massachusetts Drug Threat Assessment Update

This report is a brief update to the Massachusetts Drug Threat Assessment, which is a strategic assessment of the status and outlook of the drug threat to Massachusetts. Analytical judgment deter-mined the threat posed by each drug type or category, taking into account the most current quantitative and qualitative information on availability, demand, production or cultivation, transportation, and dis-tribution, as well as the effects of a particular drug on abusers and society as a whole. While NDIC sought to incorporate the latest available information, a time lag often exists between collection and publication of data. NDIC anticipates that this update will be useful to policymakers, law enforcement personnel, and treatment providers at the federal, state, and local levels. The Massachusetts Drug Threat Assessment was produced in April 2001 and is available on NDIC's web site www.usdoj.gov/ndic or by contacting the NDIC dissemination line at 814-532-4541.

All closely related species carrying one or more of the genomes of hexaploid wheat pro-duced a 50 kDa protein that was identified by the anti-body, and a Wcs120 homoeologue was detected by Southern analysis in all species. In the absence of chromosome arm 6DL in hexaploid CS wheat no 50 kDa protein was produced and the high-intensity Wcs120 band was missing, indicating 6DL as the loca-tion of Wcs120 but suggesting silencing of the Wcs120 homoeologue in the A genome. Levels of proteins that cross-reacted with the Wcs120 antibody and degrees of cold tolerance were also investigated in the Chinese Spring/Cheyenne (CS/CNN) chromosome substitution series. Densitometry scanning of Western blots to determine protein levels showed that the group 5 chromosome 5A had a regulatory effect on the expres-sion of the Wcs120 gene family located on the group 6 chromosomes of all three hexaploid wheat genomes. Plants with the ability to develop freezing tolerance are able to acclimate to cold

My property of 558 Hectares is located in the Tumbarumba Shire in the Murray Valley above Jingellic. About 2kms of the boundary joins the Bogandyera Nature Reserve. The NSW Government has taken control of about 70% of the property, which is all the land with a slope of 18 degrees and above, and also about 100 hectares of land they call part of a "Bio Link". My comments are based on my own property and surrounding area, and may not apply to all areas, for instance, to a low rainfall area. I have enclosed documents with this submission to give factual evidence of at least some of the problems raised. More comprehensive and detailed information can be provided verbally. Negative impacts on landholders The restrictions do not just apply to clearing vegetation but also grazing. The reasons the portions of land have not been cleared is that some has been left for environmental reasons, shade etc. and the 100 hectares was for firewood, timber, poles, etc. to diversify

Virginia Drug Threat Assessment Update

This report is a brief update to the Virginia Drug Threat Assessment, which is a strategic assessment of the status and outlook of the drug threat to Virginia. While NDIC sought to incorporate the latest available information, a time lag often exists between collection and publication of data. NDIC anticipates that this update will be useful to policymakers, law enforcement personnel, and treatment providers at the federal, state, and local levels. The distribution and abuse of illicit drugs pose a serious threat to Virginia. Although a signifi-cant amount of the illicit drugs available in the state are transported overland from New York City or southwestern states, some drugs are transported from other domestic and various foreign locations. Private and rental vehicles are the primary convey-ances used to transport illicit drugs into and through Virginia.
