Ask your health care provider for advice about quitting. These drugs may prevent flu or provide flu relief if taken quickly after onset of symptoms. National Center for Infectious Diseases, www.cdc.gov/ncidod * Depending on vaccine availability, people at high risk for serious flu complications may be given priority for receiving a flu shot.   First impressions are often lasting. For many, the impression Survey Sampling International (SSI) leaves is one of sampling excellence. That was as true in the days of phone-centric survey research as it is today with the prominence of Internet research. SurveySpot--SSI's Online Panel Survey Sampling is the first choice for both Internet and tele-phone sample by the research community. Last year, SSI provided sample for an estimated 32 million completed interviews. What may be even more surprising than that number is that, in 2003, Internet Sampling became a larger par t of SSI's business than telephone sampling. SSI has now established itself as the preeminent provider of Internet research sample. And while SSI anticipates signif icant growth in telephone sampling in 2004, an election year, we also anticipate that the gap between telephone and Internet sampling supplied by SSI will fur ther accelerate. As the unparalleled provider of both telephone and

Where can I have a bone density study? How can I find out about the diet? How often should I follow-up with the doctor? Celiac disease (CD), also referred to as gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE), or celiac sprue, is a chronic, inherited, digestive disease that can lead to malnutrition if untreated. CD is the result of an immune system response to the ingestion of gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley) that damages the small intestine. When the small intestine is damaged, nutrients pass through the small intestine, rather than absorbed. To develop celiac disease (CD) you must inherit a gene, be consuming gluten, and have the disease activated. Common triggers include stress, trauma (surgeries, etc.), and possibly viral infections. Approximately 10% of first degree relatives could have CD triggered in their lifetime.

Pain often is present in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and mesenteric ischemia. 14. A careful review of systems should be conducted to look for systemic diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, collagen-vascular diseases and other inflammatory conditions, tumor syndromes, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and other immune problems. A positive test result suggests the presence of inflammatory bowel disease, neoplastic diseases, or celiac sprue or other spruelike syndromes. An aspirate of small bowel contents for quantitative culture or breath tests with glucose or isotopically labeled xylose can be used to establish the presence of small bowel bacterial overgrowth but is likely to be meaningful only in patients with disorders predisposing them to bacterial overgrowth. 2. Structural disease should be excluded by radiography of the small bowel, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy with multiple biopsies

In the future serotonin receptors may be linked with electrical dysfunction as a way to further under-stand Irritable Bowel Syndrome. "Intestinal transplantation, says Roberta E. Sonnino, MD, professor and chief of the KUMC Department of Pediatric Surgery, "is the logical therapy for short gut syndrome resulting from massive loss of bowel or functional disorders of the intestinal tract." ual Violence - the Victim

ual violence refers to molestation and rape in childhood or adulthood. Childhood ual violence is usually referred to as "ual abuse", and is most commonly associated with someone who is known to the child, usually in the role of caretaker. In five studies of ual abuse between 1940 and 1978, one fifth to one third of all women reported having been ually abused in childhood (Herman, 1981). The Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse found girls are ually abused three times more often than boys, and the risk of being ually abused does not vary among races, but children from lower income groups or from single parent families are more frequently victims (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1996). Further, from age three on, children are at a constant rate of risk, meaning an especially broad range of vulnerability (Sedlak and Broadhurst, 1996). They found that compared to women with irritable bowel syndrome alone, those with

Therapeutic Plants of Ayurveda: A Review of Selected Clinical and Other Studies for 166 Species

ABSTRACT This paper reports on the results of a literature survey involving 166 different species of plants used in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, based on a sampling of the literature available to us. We found a wide range of clinical and other in vivo studies for many of the plant-based therapies utilized in the Ayurvedic system. Of the 166 plants investigated, 72 (43%) had at least one or more human studies and 103 (62%) had one or more animal studies. These results appear to con-tradict the generally held notion that herbal remedies used in non-Western systems of botani-cal medicine have not been evaluated in human or in vivo trials. Some of these studies are not always as large or methodologically rigorous as clinical studies reported in major medical jour-nals. Indeed, a critical assessment of the research according to the standards of evidence-based medicine would eliminate many of these studies for lack of rigor according to criteria of ran-domization, sample size,
Chronic pelvic pain is difficult to diagnose and treat, and patients are often noncompliant with medical therapy. Each case study in this series focuses on a problematic aspect of pelvic pain management and offers suggestions that may improve overall outcome. She said that the pain was most severe during menses; however, its duration had increased over time, and now it was always present to some degree. In addition, she recently had begun to experience pain during intercourse. However, some patients complain less of pelvic pain and more of bowel or bladder symptoms (eg, painful defecation or urination), low back pain, or pain that radiates down one or both legs. Pelvic pain may be part of a more general-ized pain syndrome. There is also evidence that irritable bowel syndrome may at times respond to GnRH-agonist therapy.18 Even so, response to a GnRH agonist merely indicates that the pelvic pain has a hormonally sensitive etiology.   The application of the resulting cognitive therapy manual to a series of clinical cases provides an en-riching feedback to refine it, and serves the function of an initial test of the manual. Adult Attachment Interview can give information about patient's internal working model and current mental state related to at-tachment: this can help clinicians to better understand how these factors influence the building of the thera-peutic alliance. These results indicate that treatments that are sensitive to the spiritual needs of consumers and that address physical health concerns may be more effective in community populations. The evaluations given by the subjects were compared to both the real number of biscuits and to the parallel evaluations given by a control group of normal weight people. Discussion: Although the results indicate that generally more impaired patients could be found in the treatment failure group the results await further validation
