Taylor et al., 1987 Initial BP, smoking habit, total serum cholesterol levels each at the 90th percentile, and HDL cholesterol level at the 10th percentile of their age and distribution.
The low gains are for nonsmokers with DBP of 80 mm Hg, and the high gains are for smokers with DBP of 100 mm Hg.
Grady et al., 1992 The low gains are based on the assumption that the addition of progestin provides only 2/3 of the CHD risk reduction afforded by estrogen alone, and that the relative risk of breast cancer doubles.
This intervention aimed at these two target populations does not fit into our classification system.
"Moderate" risk is halfway between "high" risk and that of the general population.

A person uncontrollably eats large amounts of food in a short period of time and then compensates for the calories consumed by purging them from their system in an attempt to prevent weight gain.
Some common behaviors may include the use of self-induced vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise to prevent weight gain.
Purging helps them regain a feeling of control, although it is a false and temporary sense of control.
Bulimia nervosa is more common than anorexia nervosa, affecting about 3 to 4 percent of young women in the middle-to-upper socioeconomic level.
Treatment of bulimia nervosa is complex and should begin with selecting a mental health professional with experience in treating eating disorders.

Examine the effect of varying ideal protein level on performance of growing-finishing swine fed cornsoybean meal diets ad libitum.
Ninety-six crossbred pigs (18.1 kg initially) were used to evaluate six levels of ideal protein on growingfinishing performance (8 castrates and 8 females/diet).
Experimental diets (Tables 1 and 2) were cornsoybean meal based with minerals and vitamins added to exceed NRC (1988) recommendations for the weight ranges within the study.
Ideal protein levels were determined by calculating the quantity of each amino acid and the actual level called for in an ideal protein based upon the values in Table 3.
The minimum ratio of calculated amino acid content and ideal amino acid levels was determined to be the first limiting amino acid.

Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee: I am pleased to have the opportunity to testify as the Subcommittee considers concerns about dietary supplements that are used for weight loss.1 Since the enactment of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in 1994, U.S. sales of weight loss supplements have increased steadily.
FDA oversees the manufacture and labeling of weight loss supplements, but is not required by DSHEA to approve dietary supplements for safety or efficacy.
These risks are of particular concern because serious health conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, often go undiagnosed.12 Consumers who have undiagnosed medical conditions and inadvertently use contraindicated dietary supplements may expose themselves to considerable risk.
Headstartreport
The overall success of the pilot study indicates that Share Our Strength's Operation Frontline and Head Start can mutually benefit from joining forces to empower low-income families to adopt healthy eating practices.
The evaluation results and Head Start participant and staff recommendations are being used to develop a curriculum supplement addressing salient topics such as obesity in preschool children; nutrition during pregnancy; iron deficiency anemia and dental health.
"Running out of food" was the only indicator where Eating Right participants showed smaller improvements compared to participants in the New York State evaluation and Tennessee EFNEP.
Each series of Eating Right classes conducted at Head Start sites began and concluded with a short focus group session conducted by the class coordinator.
obesity
American children aged 6-11 are three times more likely to be overweight today as they were 30 years ago, while the proportion of overweight teens has nearly doubled since the early 1970's.1 Furthermore, the contradiction between how we want to look and how we actually look has given rise to mental stress and an ever growing trend towards eating disorders.
This is especially true for women, 80% of whom are dissatisfied with their bodies.2 However, concern with obesity extends far beyond appearance, for a fat body is usually an unhealthy body and an obese individual is generally a short-lived individual.

This panel of clinicians, convened in 2002 at the Southwestern Surgical Congress in Coronado, Calif, debated the advantages and disadvantages of gastric bypass versus laparoscopic-band surgery, and discussed cases in which either procedure could be indicated.
They concluded that choice of procedure is a function of surgeon's skill level, and patient health status and age.
PROVOST: Currently in my practice, 80% of the bariatric operations performed are Roux-en-Y GBP, and probably two-thirds of those are laparoscopic cases.
JONES: The patient is a 45-year-old male with a BMI of 45, but now we talk to him a little more and find out that he has an alcohol problem.
Is she a candidate for bariatric surgery?
If so, would you perform Roux-en-Y GBP or Lap-Band on this patient?
globa lresources http://inic.utexas.edu/asnic/phillips/pages/metaphilosophy/philoglobalresources.pdf

To my mind, one of the greatest challenges facing philosophers today---perhaps the greatest challenge---is a new globalism, the forging of a sense of a world history of philosophy and the making of an integrative response to the individual traditions of the past.
With respect to this task, Professor K. Satchidananda Murty is a leader, a pathfinder who both has insisted on globality in the study of philosophy and has created an attractive integrative response in his own asserted views.
Professor Murty is and has been for a considerable time a prime mover within the professional community of philosophers in India.
Still, there is outstanding the rootedness he promotes for Indian philosophers, advice that tempers his globalism.
And this bit of his counsel seems founded in his sense of the nature of metaphysics and its relation to religion.

art of compost
Composting is an ancient technology, practiced today at every scale from the backyard compost pile to large commercial operations.
Washington recognized the degradative effects of farming on soil and he built a "dung repository" to make compost from the animal manures so he could replenish the soil's organic matter.
A well-aerated compost pile has at least 5% oxygen content during the active phase of composting (ideally closer to 10%).
A putrid odor can mean too much water---correct by mixing in bulking materials (see Table 3).
