The Only Game in Town - White Paper About the OSS/J Standards for OSS/BSS Integration

Depending on your point of view, it can move with lightning speed in one area while seeming to inch along in others. Yet within the last three years, it has moved from theory to proven implementation to widespread adoptions as the industry's most reliable integration platform. Measured by the speedometer of telecommunications Operating and Business Support Systems (OSS/BSS), this represents uncommonly fast progress -- like a bullet train pulling away from a horse drawn buggy. "A lot of enterprise software experience has been engineered into J2EE and telecommunications is now able to build service oriented architectures upon standardized OSS/J interfaces and a mainstream enter-prise platform for their next generation OSS systems. OSS/J arrived on the scene at a time when telcos worldwide were facing increasing pressure on multiple fronts. Isolated OSS/BSS departments using homegrown siloed systems could barely maintain the status quo let alone support a growing

AIB, one of Ireland's largest banking and financial services organisations, a significant private sector employer and one of Europe's largest indigenous companies, outlined the high security provided by Sun's Java Desktop System as the key factor in its decision to move platforms. AIB chose the Java Desktop System for its integrated client environment based on open source components and industry standards. Every quarter Sun announces the release of new products, services and technologies - we look at reasons customers are choosing Sun. Also on the software side, the Java Enterprise System is serving hundreds of thousands of employees around the world - setting the standard for lowering cost and complexity in the middleware arena. By selling more servers, Sun is capturing more ISVs, expanding its footprint in the market, providing the vehicle for selling more Solaris operating system software and its Sun Java Enterprise System software, and ultimately revving the engine for

Tutorial

Featuring five stages, the tutorial implements the core functionality of Cohen, Riolo and Axelrod (1999)'s modeling framework, which is based on an iterated prisoner's dilemma game. It is assumed that the user already masters basic Java. For those who want to read up on Java, Schildt (2001) and Eckel (1998) can be recommended for beginner's and more experienced programmers respectively. SimpleIPD sets up an iterated 2 x 2 prisoner's dilemma game and lets the user input the strategy through the RePast control panel. 2. EvolIPD puts the iterated game in an evolutionary setting by introducing a population of players that adapt through unstructured interaction. While the former creates the two player instances and lets them know about each other, the latter pins down the exact move structure of the iterated game with a for-loop. This first tutorial step introduces a number of Java features including arrays and constants that are described in Schildt (2001, Modules 5 and 7). Each

Our model is Tron, a simple dynamic game where introspective self-play quickly leads to collusive stagnation. In his work with the game of backgammon, Tesauro began collecting samples from human games to provide a fitness measure for training neural networks [21]. But these games do not have human partici-pants, as their environments are either provided by the game itself, or emerge from coevolution-ary interactions inside a population of agents. When the game ends, the applet opens a connection to our server, reports the results of the game and receives a new s-expression for the next game. The new robots that are playing for the first time in the current generation play a mini-mum of 10 games, while the "veterans" that have survived from previous generations play only 5 games. Twenty thousand games is a small number compared with the number of games played by the background process, which plays 25,000 games per generation, approximately one generation per hour.
Part I of this examination is a series of short-answer questions. Part II of this examination is a series of programming exercises. Using a combination of JavaScript, DOM, CSS, XHTML and a provided Java Applet develop a Web-based Tower of Hanoi game. The game consists of three bases (or pegs) and a group of blocks. The goal of the game is to move all blocks from the left base to the right one. The page should also display a Java Applet that shows a running count of the number of moves the user has made. 3 You do not have to detect the end of the game, i.e., when all blocks have been moved to the right base. 4 Implement the moves counter using a provided Java Applet. The Java Applet is called Counter.class and implements the following interface:

It seamlessly integrates Java-based service applications with the native applications for the underlying operating system, allowing their management in the same manner like native ones. Contains sample services such as news, music player, weather forecast, games, etc. Seamless visual integration of Java-based applications within the PDA's visual environment and its native platform, with minimized consumption of system resources Offers developers a new dimension in application portability by truly harnessing the Java motto: "Write once, run everywhere!" The product is based on the ProSyst's OSGi framework, including extended features such as "lazy" bundle initialization, which drastically reduce the startup time; The visual interface is based on the mGUI library - an embedded Java GUI library that is optimized for resource-limited devices; The visual shell of the PDA Desktop is provided It creates start menu icons and shortcuts on the PDA's native desktop for each installed

ChessBrain: a Linux-Based Distributed Computing Experiment

cjus@chessbrain.net, cjus34@yahoo.com Published in the September 2003 issue of the Linux Journal http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6929 On May 27, 2003, 646 machines worked together to play a single game of chess. ChessBrain is a system focused on playing chess, but the underlying system can be adapted for other games as well as for non-game-related applications. Imagine playing a game against an opponent, except every time he moves, you grab the phone and start calling friends for help. The SuperNode connects to an on-line game server, which allows visiting members to play against one another, challenge ChessBrain to a game or watch ChessBrain play against its current opponent. On December 22, 2002, ChessBrain played its first game of distributed chess. A job unit is an XML block containing a game position and instructions on how to analyze the position. The SuperNode server then passes the current game position to the external BeoServer process. Members of the game

Advancing data capabilities for cellular networks are creating significant business opportunities for developers of applications, particularly consumer applications where messaging and entertainment applications are experiencing widespread adoption. Enterprise applications are also seeing significant adoption, but differ substantially due to different types of users, a greater emphasis on higher-end platforms, including smartphones, PDAs and notebook computers, and different development approaches. Language options for development include browser-based markup, Java and native applications, providing a set of tradeoffs between ease of development and application performance. Just like the Internet at large, wireless applications can be divided into those that use a browser to access Internet (or operator) hosted content, in this case using the phone's microbrowser, or those applications that execute locally on the user's device, such as an IM client or game. For
This is a rough draft of a presentation about java.util.logging. Debugging a deployed/in the field product. Give other systems the chance to monitor your stuff by looking at logging (a bastard child UI). Doing a tour of customer support is the best way to figure why and what to log. More Logging Examples [Put in AuthLoggingExample.java with output.] [JDBCLoggingExample] The LOG_TOPIC/CLASS_NAME Log topics are dot name'd hiarchies that "just happen" to work just like package names. With these, you need to make sure your Permission Domain has been granted java.util.logging.LoggingPermission. Configuration Java logging isn't as easy as classloader loading a la log4j. Because java.util.logging was so late to the game, there's lots of logging frameworks, and thus lots of logging config files and APIs. Along these lines, conventions weren't made for converting things like Servlet logs to java.util.logging calls.
And we saw a game where you cast spells by drawing mouse gestures, with the game measuring nuances of the gesture shape to control aspects of the spell. Mobile gaming is in the process of shedding an image of retro arcade games and maturing into a medium with unique attributes. Long term, I am hoping (someday, when America has broadband like South Korea) to see quality game-play video served directly to gamers' homes by game makers. The game industry is mitigating risk by basing a large proportion of new products on known licenses and sequels to popular games. On the one hand, the fact that most successful games these days are attached to some kind of license is a sign that games are finally entering into the global ecosystem of mass pop culture. Attendees of the Serious Games Summit learn how extensive the appli-cation of games and game technology is and can be outside of the traditional use of entertainment. Despite the overall growth and progress

They Got Gameplay

  - William Gibson have seen the future of educational technology, and it looks a lot (though not exactly) like the new, recently announced, n-Gage mobile phone/gaming platform from Nokia. Like the n-Gage, it has a built-in mp3 player and FM Radio, removable storage on tiny smart cards, and the ability to run any program written in Java ME (micro-edition), which means it can control any other device, like a projector or robot. Of course they'll play games, make calls, and instant message their friends. But the kids will also use the device to prep for Bush's standardized tests, using fun games designed to prepare them (not "drill and kill," but fun ways to practice), that they and their friends actually like and choose to compete with, as it's a lot more fun than what happens in class. These games will be made both by teachers for free, and by vendors for sale. The devices will have standard word processors, and a standard presentation package optimized for both multimedia and

THE FORMATION AND GOVERNANCE OF

To capture the portfolio formation process in an environment where it is highly critical for firm performance, I have chosen the setting of wireless gaming. The interfirm dependence that firms face in this new market makes wireless gaming an ideal setting for the study of alliance portfolios. Within this setting, I chose to study wireless game publishers as focal firms because their role requires the largest number of interorganizational ties among all types of firms in the wireless gaming market (Appendix 1). Because they offered their carrier partners a variety of games, they could hold the pulse of the market more closely by observing which of their games sold more than others. Since they only provided action movie games and did not have access to the sales numbers for other kinds of games, they could tell that these games were not selling well. Like the other Java carriers, this carrier was not ready to launch games. Struggled to switch to other game genres once it
